The night was deep. Metrobay City was blanketed in darkness, and the once bustling streets were now left with only a few scattered people, busy with their lives.
Tonight was incredibly quiet. But in Metrobay City, there was one girl who couldn't fall asleep.
Cheryl lay on her soft bed, tossing and turning.
Soft breathing echoed from the sofa beside her. Cheryl turned, using the moonlight to carefully observe the face of her "husband."
She didn't believe that there were no bad people in this world, because she was Cheryl from the Sanchez family.
Having grown up in a world full of deceit and manipulation, she had long developed a keen sensitivity to malice.
'But this man in front of her—his files painted a dark picture, even implicating him in a murder. What if he suddenly snapped and lost control?' With this thought, Cheryl's breathing grew more rapid.
"Do you like what you see?" Drake's eyes remained closed as he spoke. "Also, you don't need to keep that fruit knife under your pillow."
Upon hearing this, Cheryl's heart skipped a beat. Embarrassed, she sheepishly pulled her hand out from beneath the pillow.
She pulled the blanket up to cover her blushing face and tightly closed her eyes, thinking, 'How did he know I had a fruit knife under my pillow? Drake is just a soldier with no power or influence, yet he's already offended the Sanchez family for me. But here I am, still so guarded against him…'
Suddenly, a thought struck Cheryl's mind. 'He would never hurt me.'
For some reason, as time passed, this thought became clearer and more intense.
Reflecting on the past two days—from the moment he stood up for her by striking Ashley to the way he looked at her—it all seemed to send a message.
"Trust me, from now on, I'm your husband. I will protect you."
Yes, in just two days of interaction, Cheryl had gradually imprinted this man's image deep in her heart. He was now a part of her that she couldn't easily shake off.
The room returned to silence, with only the sound of steady breathing filling the air.
Cheryl opened her eyes again, looking at the figure curled up on the sofa.
Drake was tall, and the sofa could barely fit half of his body.
Watching him frown and shift uncomfortably to find a better position, Cheryl summoned her courage and said, "Are you uncomfortable? Why don't you... lie next to me instead?" By the time she finished speaking, her voice was as soft as a whisper.
As soon as the words left her mouth, Cheryl was overcome with embarrassment. 'Oh no, Cheryl, do you even know what you're saying? How could you invite a man you barely know into your bed? Won't Drake think I'm... loose?'
Cheryl wasn't even thinking about the implications of inviting a man to her bed at night. She was more concerned about how Drake would view her.
This showed that Cheryl was gradually beginning to accept her husband of just two days.
Due to her background and personality, Cheryl hadn't had many friends growing up.
Many girls distanced themselves, afraid that others would think they were cozying up to her for the Sanchez family's influence.
Even in her school days, such perceptions were hard to avoid. As a result, Cheryl had very little understanding of relationships between men and women.
After saying those words, Cheryl regretted instantly. Hearing the steady breathing from the sofa, she relaxed a bit. 'It seems he must have fallen asleep…'
For some reason, though, she felt a little disappointed.
But the next moment, a single word drifted into Cheryl's ears. "Okay."
Cheryl froze, not even having time to react. Suddenly, she felt he gently lying down beside her. He was as warm as a furnace.
"Can I have the blanket, Cheryl?"
Hearing his voice so close and feeling his warm breath on her face, Cheryl's body stiffened. Almost reflexively, she spread the blanket over to him.
Drake, noticing her tense reaction, smiled softly. 'This is the girl I like. This is the girl I will protect for the rest of my life.'
Initially, Drake had just intended to tease Cheryl. He hadn't expected her to actually let him lie beside her.
After a brief pause, he turned over and pulled the blanket over himself. He also casually rested his arm on Cheryl's neck, feeling the soft warmth of her skin.
The two of them, though still fully dressed, had only a small point of contact—his arm against her neck.
But even this slight contact made Cheryl's face turn as red as an apple.
Drake immediately felt his mouth go dry. To avoid scaring Cheryl, he suppressed the excitement stirring in his heart and slowly said, "Sweet dreams, honey."
Then, he closed his eyes and drifted into sleep.
When Cheryl heard the word "honey," she was shyer. She had never been this close to a man before.
But as she listened to his breathing and felt his presence, she was filled with a sense of safety she had never known. And so, gradually, she too slipped into sleep.
As for whether the two of them actually fell asleep, who could say?

A night passed. "Get up for breakfast!" Mandy's voice called out. Cheryl yawned as she walked outside.
By that time, Drake was already seated at the table, eating.
Seeing Cheryl head to the bathroom, Mandy hurried after her, saying, "Cheryl, last night… did you…"
Hearing this, Cheryl blushed, recalling how she had been so forward the night before. She shyly responded, "Mom, it's nothing, don't worry."
Hearing this, Mandy felt reassured.
But just as the family was having breakfast, a knocking sound suddenly came from the door.
At that moment, Ian looked up, his voice trembling, "Is… is Sabrina here?"
Ian was naturally timid and weak. Throughout his life, his biggest fear had been his older brother and his sister-in-law.
Mandy walked to the door and peeked through the peephole, her face instantly turning pale.
'She's here! Sabrina is here! We're finished!'
Even Cheryl felt a surge of nervousness. It was as if there were dozens of people behind the door wielding knives and clubs.
The entire family was on edge.
"Open the door. We have a guest, don't we?" Drake calmly said, holding a slice of bread in his hand.
His relaxed demeanor left the other three feeling helpless.
Cheryl took a deep breath, set down her bowl and scoop, and walked to the door to gently open it.
"Cheryl." Sabrina's face was unpleasant, but she forced a smile. "I'm here to apologize."
Ian and Mandy were both stunned. 'Sabrina is actually here to apologize?'
"Your dismissal was a misunderstanding. I've reflected on it, and I hope you won't hold any grudges. Please come back to work at Sanchez Corporation."
Sabrina stepped aside, revealing Ashley behind her. With a stern tone, she directed Ashley. "Apologize to your sister now."
Ashley gritted her teeth, clenching her fists tightly, her face pale as she bowed. "I'm sorry, Cheryl."
Sabrina nodded slightly and sincerely said to Cheryl again, "I'm truly sorry, Cheryl. Please forgive me. The company really needs you. Tomorrow, when you return, we'll welcome you and explain everything to the staff personally."
Sabrina's attitude was extremely respectful. When Isaac had returned to the company the previous day and told her she needed to personally apologize to Cheryl, Sabrina had been so angry that she smashed her favorite coffee cup.
But there was no other choice. The person she'd hoped to rely on had been fired from the Hargold Group.
Now, if Sabrina wanted to secure this project, she had no choice but to turn to Cheryl. For the sake of her position at Sanchez Corporation, Sabrina had to swallow her pride.
In the end, Cheryl agreed.

The next day, over a hundred employees stood outside the company building, waiting for Cheryl's arrival.
Every face showed frustration and anger.
They'd been forced to start work two hours early just because of this lady of Sanchez family.
There were even rumors that Cheryl had a fling with Harold, which was how she managed to secure the project.
Judging by the Sanchez Corporation's behavior, it seemed to confirm that the rumors were true.
With such a reputation, the employees were indignant about having to wait for her.
Sabrina stood in front of the employees, feeling secretly pleased as she sensed their anger. 'Hmph, Cheryl, the entire staff already despises you. Let's see how long you can last before you quit on your own.'
Indeed, all the rumors had been spread by Sabrina herself, in hopes that Cheryl would leave after securing the project.

In the distance, Drake rode a motorcycle, bringing Cheryl to the company.
He saw the crowd of employees standing outside the building and a playful smile appeared on his face. 'Sabrina really doesn't know what's coming.'
After Cheryl got off the bike, the group of employees immediately bowed, saying, "Welcome back to the company, Ms. Sanchez."
Cheryl felt a bit flustered.
She could clearly sense the disdain and anger in their voices.
Who would want to wait outside for so long in the morning? Not to mention to wait for this b*tch, who had been someone's mistress!
At that moment, a stretch limousine appeared in everyone's view.
Sabrina frowned slightly.
'Is that… Harold's car? Why is he here so early? Wasn't our meeting scheduled for 10 a.m.?'
Harold was a legend in Metrobay City, having risen from nothing to wield immense power in just five years. His story was considered legendary.
"Mr. Gold!" As Harold got out of the car, Sabrina halted her thoughts about the rumors and hurried to greet him.
But Harold walked briskly past her, heading straight for Cheryl. "Ms. Sanchez, I apologize for the sudden visit. Please forgive me."
He completely ignored Sabrina's outstretched hand as he walked by.
This left everyone in the crowd stunned.
'Did Harold just apologize for coming early? What… what is going on?'
