Into the shadow

736 Words
The village of Everwind was quieter than it had ever been before. The usual sounds of children playing and villagers trading were replaced by an eerie stillness, as if the land itself was holding its breath. The villagers no longer looked at Lina with kindness; instead, their eyes were filled with a mix of fear and distrust. They spoke in hushed tones, and as Lina walked past them, the silence seemed to grow louder, pressing in on her. Elysia had been her rock for as long as Lina could remember, but even now, she could feel the weight of the unknown pulling at her. Every step she took felt heavier than the last, and every shadow seemed to stretch just a little further, a little darker. “Are you alright?” Elysia asked, her voice soft, yet filled with concern. Lina shook her head slightly, pulling her thoughts together. “I don’t know what to think anymore. That curse... Damon said we’re bound by it. That we have to stop it, but I don’t even know where to begin.” Elysia glanced over at her, her brows furrowing with determination. “We’ll figure it out. Together. You’re not alone in this, Lina. But you need to understand that Damon’s family… they’ve been involved with this curse for generations. His words are not to be taken lightly.” “I know,” Lina replied quietly, her voice filled with an unsettling mix of dread and curiosity. “But he’s not the only one with power, right? I mean, if I was able to wake up the curse… there must be something inside me, something I don’t understand yet.” “You’re stronger than you think,” Elysia said with a reassuring smile, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “But there’s no denying that we’re dealing with forces we can’t control.” They reached the edge of the village, where the Everwood loomed dark and silent ahead of them. The trees seemed to stretch endlessly, their gnarled branches twisting in the wind. The air was thick with magic—ancient, untamed, and dangerous. This was where Lina had always felt most at home, but now, it felt alien, like a place where she no longer belonged. “Are you sure this is the right path?” Elysia asked, looking back at the village one last time. Lina nodded, her throat tight. “We need to go deeper into the Everwood. If the curse is tied to this place, then that’s where we’ll find the answers.” “I don’t trust that Damon, but I trust you,” Elysia said. “If you say this is the only way, then we’ll face it head-on.” With that, the two of them entered the forest, each step feeling heavier as the trees seemed to close in around them. The forest was alive, the rustle of leaves and the distant howls of creatures making the air thick with anticipation. Lina could feel the pull of something ancient in the air, the weight of her own magic stirring within her. Her powers had always been linked to the forest, but now, it was as if the forest was awakening to her presence, responding to her in ways she didn’t understand. “I don’t like this,” Elysia muttered, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. “It’s too quiet.” Lina felt it too—the unsettling silence. The Everwood had always been a place of life, but now it felt as though something was holding its breath, waiting. She could almost feel the trees watching her, judging her. Then, a sound broke the silence—a soft, almost imperceptible rustling of leaves, followed by a low growl from the depths of the forest. Elysia immediately moved to stand in front of Lina, her hand gripping her sword tighter. Lina’s heart raced. The air grew colder, the shadows in the forest growing deeper, more oppressive. “What is that?” “I don’t know, but we’re not alone,” Elysia replied, her voice taut with tension. Before either of them could react, a figure stepped out from the shadows, his dark silhouette barely visible against the trees. The air seemed to shift around him, as if he were part of the forest itself, an extension of the shadows. Lina’s breath hitched in her throat as she recognized him.
