I didn’t sleep that night.
Darius was in my pack. In my territory. And the bond wouldn’t shut up.
“Mate. Mate. Mate.” It scratched behind my eyes.
At dawn, Alpha Kade summoned me. “Darius requested you for border patrol.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Rae.” Kade’s eyes were kind. “He won’t leave until you talk to him. Might as well get it over with.”
So I went.
The forest was cold. Mist clung to the trees. Darius was already waiting at the border line, leaning against a rock.
“You came.”
“Don’t get used to it.”
We walked in silence. Too close. The bond made my skin buzz.
Then the howl came.
Not a wolf. A rogue.
Three of them dropped from the trees. Dark fur. Black eyes. No pack scent.
“Behind me,” Darius snapped.
“I can fight,” I growled. My claws came out.
“Not alone.” He moved faster than I remembered. He took down the first rogue before it hit the ground.
The second came for me. I met it head on. Teeth. Blood. Pain in my shoulder.
Darius was there in a second. He ripped it off me.
When it was over, we were both bleeding. Breathing hard. Staring at each other.
“Thank you,” I whispered before I could stop myself.
His eyes softened. “You still feel it too.”
I stepped back. “That doesn’t change anything.”
But my wolf disagreed.
