The wound on my shoulder burned.
Darius tore a strip from his shirt and pressed it to me. His hands were careful. Too careful.
“Hold still,” he said.
I should’ve pulled away. I didn’t.
We were alone in the trees. Blood on both of us. Hearts racing. The bond screaming.
His eyes dropped to my lips. Mine dropped to his.
For a second, the last three years didn’t exist.
“Rae…”
“Don’t,” I breathed.
He stopped. His forehead almost touched mine. I could feel his breath.
“I rejected you because I was scared,” he whispered. “Scared an Omega Luna would get me killed. Scared I wasn’t strong enough to protect you. So I chose what I thought was safe.”
Selena.
“And it got her killed,” he finished.
I pushed his chest. Hard. “So you came back to me because you have no one else?”
“No.” His voice broke. “I came back because it’s always been you. Even when I was stupid enough to say no.”
He leaned in.
I turned my head at the last second. His lips brushed my cheek instead.
“Earn it,” I said. Then I walked away, bleeding.
Behind me, I heard him curse.
