My new life

1696 Words
The driver helps me into this fancy building, and I can't help but feel like I'm in some weird dream. Like, any second now I'm gonna wake up back in my little apartment above the bakery. A security guard stops us, but the driver just smiles and says, "She's the resident of the Penthouse." Just like that, the guard's all friendly. "Welcome back, ma'am," he says, all polite and respectful. "Thank you!" I manage to squeak out, but inside, my heart's doing somersaults. This isn't me. I'm not this Serena. I feel like I'm floating through someone else's life. The driver wheels me to the elevator, and I'm gripping the armrests so tight my knuckles are white. The elevator is all fancy metal and soft lights. It's beautiful, but it feels so... not me. "What do you think of this place?" the driver asks, smiling like he's showing off his own house. "To be honest, I never imagined I'd live in a place like this," I say, and man, do I sound tired. As the elevator doors close, my heart's racing. What am I getting into? "You'll get used to it. Life will be exciting," the driver says, hitting the top floor button like it's no big deal. When those doors open again, I swear my jaw hits the floor. The living room is huge, with windows from floor to ceiling showing off the whole city. It's like being in the clouds. A servant (a servant! Me, with a servant!) sets me up at a desk with a laptop. I sit there for what feels like forever before I work up the courage to open it. Part of me is still hoping this is all just some crazy dream. But then a notification pops up, and it's like a bucket of ice water over my head. "Your husband has cancelled all meeting arrangements." I stare at the screen, barely breathing. "Husband?" The word feels weird in my mouth. And then it hits me - they mean Damien. I start digging through the info on the computer, and it's like watching my life play out backwards. In this world, Damien and I were still high school sweethearts - that part's the same. But my dad didn't die. And me? Instead of becoming the heartbroken baker girl, I married Damien and became his business partner. The more I read, the crazier it gets. In this world, I finished my college. No baking dreams for this Serena. Instead, I went all-in on business and corporate management, working with Damien to run his family's company - Steele Corp. Get this - Steele Corp is this huge Fortune 500 company that's basically changed how the whole world eats. They make this nutritional liquid that's become the main food in this efficiency-obsessed society. Who needs taste when you can have "extremely high efficiency," right? And Damien, being the heir to all this, has turned into this proud, cold guy I barely recognize. But here's the kicker - our marriage? Not exactly happily ever after. Apparently, three years in, this Serena had some kind of change of heart and tried to take over the company. Like, full-on business war against her own husband. The gossip sites are even having a field day with our "marital discord." I find a drawer full of condoms and birth control pills. Guess even though we're married on paper, we're still... you know. Just making sure there are no "accidents." I lean back in the chair, feeling like someone's sitting on my chest. In this world, Damien and I are technically husband and wife, but we're basically on the edge of divorce. The thought makes me shiver. This Damien, with all his arrogance and his big-shot position, he's nothing like the sweet, easygoing guy I remember from high school. He's more like some worldly playboy from a movie. But wait, there's more. In my email, there's this message from someone named Stuart, warning me to be careful of Damien. I have no clue who Stuart is, but the email's marked as read and filed away as spam. It's from three days ago. Even though I don't remember it, something tells me it's more than just junk mail. Here's the thing, though. Even with all this evidence saying Damien's bad news, there's still this tiny part of me that wants to trust him. In my memories - my real memories - Damien was never like this. He was the guy who'd do anything for me, take on any responsibility. I sigh, trying to shake off all these confusing thoughts. If fate's given me a do-over, I'm not giving up easy. Especially not on Damien. Deep down, I still believe he's not a bad guy. We've just forgotten who we really are, caught up in this crazy world. I'm gonna face Damien, even if it looks like our marriage is on its last legs. "We just need to talk," I tell myself. "Really talk." But, you know what's weird about being alone in a huge apartment? It's not the echo of your footsteps or the way shadows stretch across empty rooms. It's the silence. Like, the kind of silence that's so loud it makes your ears ring. I'm sitting on this ridiculous white couch (who even has white furniture?), watching the sun set over Manhattan. The city's lighting up like a Christmas tree, all golden and sparkly, but I just feel... empty. My phone's in my hand - some fancy new model that probably cost more than my old car. Dad's contact info is right there. Finch Wilson. Just seeing his name makes my heart do this weird flippy thing. Here's the thing about dead fathers coming back to life: you'd think you'd know exactly what to say. All those conversations you wish you'd had, all the things you never got to tell them. But now that I actually have the chance? My mind's totally blank. I hit call anyway, because what else am I supposed to do on my first night in a parallel universe? Ring. Ring. Ring. Nothing. Just his voicemail. "Hi, you've reached Finch Wilson. Leave a message." Oh my God. His voice. I haven't heard it in so long, I'd almost forgotten what it sounded like. Almost. It's like when you smell your mom's perfume on a stranger - that split second where your whole body forgets she's gone. "Hey, Dad," I manage to squeak out. "It's me. I just..." What do you say to the ghost who isn't a ghost anymore? "I wanted to hear your voice. Call me back? If you want. No pressure or anything." Smooth, Serena. Real smooth. According to his i********: (my dad has i********: - how weird is that?), he's on some fancy yacht in the middle of nowhere. The pictures show him all tanned and happy, posing with people I don't recognize. He looks younger than I remember. Maybe grief aged him in my world. I wander around the penthouse, trying to find... I don't know, something that feels like me. But everything's so perfect it hurts. The art on the walls probably costs more than my entire bakery, but none of it means anything. There aren't any photos, no magnets on the fridge, no coffee rings on tables. It's like one of those fake rooms they set up in furniture stores. Then I find The Door. It's at the end of this long hallway, all sleek and modern and very, very locked. Damien's room, obviously. Because nothing says "I trust my wife" like a deadbolt on your bedroom door. I press my hand against the wood. It's cool and smooth, like everything else in this place. What's he hiding in there? Company secrets? A secret girlfriend? The real Serena, tied up and waiting to take her life back? Okay, maybe that last one's a bit dramatic. I end up in what must be my room, though it feels about as personal as a hotel suite. The bed is huge - like, could-fit-my-entire-high-school-volleyball-team huge. The sheets are silk, because apparently that's a thing people actually sleep on, not just something from romance novels. You know those nights where everything feels too much and not enough at the same time? That's tonight. I curl up in the middle of that massive bed, hugging my knees to my chest. The city lights paint starry patterns on the ceiling, and I can't help but think about my apartment above the bakery. How the floorboards creaked in exactly the right places. How you could smell tomorrow's bread even before it was baked. How the radiator clanked like it was telling secrets in morse code. This place? It's too perfect. Too quiet. Too... everything. I reach for my phone again, scrolling through photos I don't remember taking. There's one of me and Damien at some fancy party. We're smiling, but it doesn't reach our eyes. His arm is around my waist, but there's space between us, like we're both afraid to get too close. What happened to us? The Damien I knew used to laugh so hard he'd snort milk out of his nose. He wore the same ratty basketball shoes until they fell apart. He kissed me behind the bleachers and tasted like the cherry slushies we'd get from the corner store. This Damien? He looks at me like I'm a bug he found in his expensive coffee. I close my eyes, trying to sleep, but my brain won't shut up. Somewhere out there, the real Serena might be lost in my world, probably horrified by my tiny apartment and the flour-covered aprons in the closet. Or maybe she's just... gone. And I'm stuck here, playing dress-up in her designer clothes. Tomorrow, I'll figure this out. Tomorrow, I'll be strong and smart and whatever else this world's Serena is supposed to be. But tonight? Tonight I'm just a girl in a too-big bed, wearing silk pajamas that aren't mine, missing a life that might not even exist anymore. I fall asleep eventually, dreaming of cherry slushies and basketball shoes and a boy who used to look at me like I hung the moon.
