The eastern shoreline had become a graveyard of discarded plastic. Piles of refuse bleached in the winter sun, their vibrant colours ebbing with the departing waves. A strip of road stretched over the beach and out to sea. The morning was bitterly cold, the view across the ocean just visible against the mist. A shadow perched on the horizon at the end of the bridge, a distant, forgotten island. Scarlet flexed the growing stiffness from her hand and slammed the car into gear. The sea was slipping away, the old road beckoning her forward. She hit the accelerator, kicking up sand and plastic debris in her wake.
