Chapter 3: Masks Begin to Fall

751 Words
Elena hadn’t slept. She sat at the edge of her bed, motionless, as the city outside stirred to life. Her phone lay in her lap, the anonymous messages still open on the screen. Don’t trust Adrian. He isn’t who you think he is. The lines blurred before her eyes, not because she didn’t believe them but because a part of her still wanted not to. Adrian had been the only safe place she thought she had left. And now? That, too, was poisoned. She forced herself up and dressed carefully navy slacks, black blouse, heels sharp enough to kill in. If she was going to walk into the lion’s den, she might as well look the part. In the mirror, she practiced her smile. Not too wide. Not too forced. A survivor’s smile. Later, at Hawthorne & Pierce Elena stepped into the office with the precision of a woman who had something to prove and something to hide. Olivia was already there, seated at the communal desk space outside the executive suite, typing away. Her manicured fingers flew across the keyboard, but her eyes flicked up the moment Elena entered. “El,” she said with a brightness that scraped against Elena’s nerves, “Did you sleep at all? You look a little… pale.” “Just thinking about work,” Elena replied coolly. “You know how it is.” “Of course.” Olivia offered a sugary smile. “So dedicated.” Elena ignored the barb. Let her talk. Let her smile. Let her think I’m clueless. That was the strategy now. She stepped into her office, shut the door, and opened her laptop. Then, she did something she hadn’t dared in years: she baited a trap. She created a fake document a fabricated corporate email titled “Blackwood Merger Strategy Confidential Draft.” She saved it into a shared folder she knew Olivia occasionally accessed. Then she waited. Lunchtime Elena hadn’t seen Adrian all morning, which only deepened the pit in her stomach. When he finally appeared, it was in the hallway laughing with someone on the phone. She watched from behind a glass partition. “I told her not to worry about the board,” he was saying. “She trusts me. That’s all that matters right now.” A pause. A low chuckle. “No, she has no idea.” He hung up. Elena’s breath caught in her throat. Was he talking about her? She turned, walking away fast before he saw her. Her world spun as fury and panic collided in her chest. But her face? Calm. Cold. Controlled. She passed Marcus on the way to the elevators he was just stepping out, reviewing something on a sleek black tablet. He glanced up and frowned. “You alright?” Elena opened her mouth to say she was fine but the words refused to come. She stepped into the elevator without answering. Later That Day Marcus Intervenes By 4 PM, a message arrived on her desk. Handwritten. “Rooftop. 4:15. Elena climbed the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Marcus was waiting, leaning against the railing like he belonged there wind catching the edges of his coat, eyes narrowed on the skyline. “You’re being watched,” he said without preamble. Elena froze. “Excuse me?” “I have contacts,” he replied calmly. “Your name’s started to come up in rooms it shouldn’t.” Her mouth went dry. “Why are you telling me this?” “Because I’ve seen this before. Women with fire in their hearts and knives in their backs. You don’t look like someone who gets taken down quietly.” Elena studied him. “What do you want from me?” He tilted his head slightly. “To see the game played by someone worthy.” Something flickered between them an unspoken alliance, a shared understanding of survival and shadows. “I can help you,” Marcus continued. “You just have to let me.” That night, back at her apartment, Elena’s trap finally snapped shut. She opened her work email and found a “leaked” press release from a gossip news site: > BREAKING: Hawthorne Eyes Merger with Blackwood Group. Exclusive Documents Inside. Her fake file. Her planted file. Someone had taken the bait. And now she had proof that someone close to her someone with access was feeding information to outsiders. Elena smiled to herself for the first time in days. Let the game begin.
