CHAPTER FIVE

1539 Words
The days passed in a blur as Haven's family prepared for her father's burial. The pain of his loss still lingered, but her mother's strength and resilience inspired Haven to stay strong. Her mother, Mrs Williams, took charge of the burial arrangements, ensuring everything was perfect for her beloved husband's farewell. Haven and her brothers helped with various tasks, from choosing the casket to writing tributes. As the burial ceremony approached, Ravenswood's community came together to support the Williams family. Neighbours, friends, and even distant relatives attended, paying their respects. After the emotional service, Haven's mother announced her decision to start a small business to support their family. She had always been passionate about baking and cooking, and now she saw an opportunity to turn that passion into a livelihood. "With your father gone, we need to secure our future," Mrs. Williams explained to her children. "This business will help us stay afloat and keep his memory alive." Haven and her brothers rallied around their mother, eager to help. They named the business "Williams' Delights" and started selling traditional Nigerian dishes, cakes, and pastries. As the business grew, so did the family's bond. Haven's mother taught her and her brothers valuable skills, from cooking to customer service. The venture brought them closer together and helped them heal. But little did they know, this newfound stability would soon be disrupted by dark forces lurking in Ravenswood's shadows... ******************** The next day, Elias met Rachel at a quiet café on the outskirts of Ravenswood. Rachel, a knowledgeable and resourceful ally, had promised to share information about a potential solution to the supernatural threats. "Elias, I've researched the ancient myths and legends," Rachel said, her voice low and serious. "I think I've found a way to protect your family." Elias leaned in, eager to hear her plan. Meanwhile, Haven and Tino prepared for another school day. Haven, 12 years old, was in class Junior Secondary School 3, while Tino, 7 years old, was in primary 3. Their mother ensured they were ready, packing their bags and making lunch. As they walked to school, Haven couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. She kept looking over her shoulder, sensing unseen eyes watching her. "Tino, stay close to me today, okay?" Haven whispered. Tino nodded, his bright eyes scanning their surroundings. As the day progressed, Haven noticed subtle changes in her classmates' behaviour. Some seemed distant or nervous, while others whispered among themselves. What was happening in Ravenswood? Elias arrived at Rachel's location, eager to learn more about the solution she had promised. "Rachel, what did you find out?" Elias asked. "The curse affecting your family is rooted in ancient mythology," Rachel explained. Elias listened intently, determined to understand and protect his family. Meanwhile, at home, Haven and Tino searched for Elias. "Where's Elias?" Haven asked her mother. "I don't know, dear. He said he had an errand," Mrs. Williams replied. Haven felt uneasy. As night fell, Elias returned home, his expression serious. "Family, we need to talk," Elias said. But before he could share Rachel's revelation, a loud knock at the door interrupted. "Who could that be?" Mrs Williams wondered. Haven's heart raced as she approached the door. "Who is it?" Haven called out. No response. "Who is it?" Haven repeated her voice firm. Silence. Haven's instincts screamed caution. Something didn't feel right. "Let me check," Elias said, moving to the door. Elias peered through the peephole, his expression unreadable. "Well?" Haven asked. Elias hesitated before opening the door. To their surprise, a woman with piercing dark eyes and long, curly hair stood on their porch. "Can I help you?" Elias asked. "I'm Rachel," the woman replied. "I've been trying to reach you." Haven's eyes narrowed. "How do you know our name?" Rachel's gaze locked onto Haven's. "I've been watching over you." Rachel's words sent a shiver down Haven's spine. "Watching over me?" Haven repeated, her voice laced with scepticism. "Why?" Rachel stepped forward, her eyes locked onto Haven's. "I've been tracking the supernatural occurrences in Ravenswood. Your family's at the centre of it." Elias intervened, his voice protective. "What do you know about our family?" Rachel hesitated before answering, "Your father's death... it wasn't an accident." Haven's world tilted. "What do you mean?" Rachel's expression turned grim. "Your father made a deal with something dark in Ravenswood's history. His death was a warning." Haven's mind reeled. "A warning for what?" Rachel's eyes locked onto Haven's. "Your father made a deal with a demon, Haven. A deal that puts your family in grave danger." Haven's heart sank. She had suspected something was off about her father's death. "What kind of deal?" Elias asked, his voice firm. Rachel hesitated before answering, "Your father traded protection and success for... something precious." Haven's eyes widened. "What did he trade?" Rachel's voice is barely above a whisper, "Your family's soul." The room fell silent. Tino, who had been quietly observing, spoke up, "What does that mean?" Haven knelt beside Tino, her voice gentle, "It means we have to be careful, baby brother." Elias stood, determination etched on his face, "We need to know more about this deal and how to break it." Rachel nodded, "I've researched ways to sever the contract, but it won't be easy. Rachel continued, "Breaking the contract will require immense courage and sacrifice. You'll need to gather allies and resources." Elias nodded resolutely. "We'll do whatever it takes." Haven's thoughts raced. What allies? What resources? Rachel handed Elias a small notebook. "This contains information on the demon and potential allies. But be cautious, Haven's presence could attract unwanted attention." Tino looked up at Haven, concerned etched on his face. Haven smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry, Tino. We'll protect each other." Elias opened the notebook, scanning the contents. "This is a good start. What's the first step?" Rachel leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. "You need to meet with someone who's experienced in dealing with demons. After Rachel left, Elias studied the notebook, determination etched on his face. Haven listened intently, absorbing every detail. Tino clung to Haven's hand, his eyes wide with worry. Mrs. Williams entered the room, her expression concerned. "What's going on?" Elias summarized Rachel's information, leaving out the more disturbing details. Mrs. Williams's face paled. "We'll face this together, as a family." Rachel stood. "I'll continue researching. Keep this information secret for now." As Rachel departed, Haven felt a sense of resolve. We'll protect our family. But for now, she had school to focus on. The next morning, Haven and Tino walked to school, hand in hand. Their normal routine offered a fleeting sense of comfort. But the supernatural threats loomed, waiting to disrupt their lives again. At school, Haven struggled to focus on her classes. Her mind wandered to the demon, the contract, and Rachel's warnings. During recess, Haven sat alone on a bench, her thoughts swirling. Amara, her best friend, approached. "Hey, Haven, what's wrong?" Haven hesitated before confiding in Amara about the supernatural occurrences and Rachel's visit. Amara listened, eyes wide. "That's crazy! What can I do to help?" Haven smiled gratefully. "Just being here for me helps." As the school day ended, Haven and Tino walked home, anxious. At home, Elias studied the notebook, researching ways to break the contract. Mrs. Williams prepared dinner, her expression worried. Haven helped with household chores, her mind racing. Suddenly, strange noises echoed outside. Windows rattled. Doors creaked. The family exchanged nervous glances. "What's happening?" Tino asked, clinging to Haven. Haven's heart pounded. Rachel's words echoed in her mind: "The demon will stop at nothing Elias sat beside Sophia on the couch, his expression weary. "I don't know how to protect them, Sophia. The demon's powers are beyond our understanding." Sophia's hand wrapped around his, her voice soothing. "We'll face this together, Elias. We'll find a way to break the contract and keep our family safe." Elias's eyes met hers, gratitude and determination shining through. "With you by my side, I can face anything." Sophia's gentle smile reassured him. "We'll get through this, together." Elias leaned in, his lips brushing against Sophia's in a soft, comforting kiss. She reciprocated, her touch calming his worries. Zander wrapped his arms around Tracy, holding her close. "I'm worried about Haven and Tino, Tracy. This demon's powers are beyond our control." Tracy's voice was steady. "We'll support Elias and Sophia, Zander. We'll find a way to protect our family." Zander's eyes locked onto hers, determination burning within. "I won't let anything harm them, Tracy. I promise." Tracy's hand caressed his cheek. "We're in this together, Zander. Always." Their lips met in a reassuring kiss, unity and strength in their embrace. Just as Zander and Tracy pulled back from their kiss, a chilling draft swept through the room. "They're here," Tracy whispered, her eyes wide with fear. Zander's grip on her tightened. "Who?" Tracy's voice is barely audible, "The spirits. They've found us." The lights flickered, then died. An unearthly silence fell. And then, a faint whisper echoed... "Haven, your time's running out." Zander's face is set in determination. "We won't let them harm her." Tracy's eyes locked onto his. "We need to protect Haven now." Suddenly, Haven's scream pierced the darkness... "Tino! No!"
