As I painted my nails, I asked, "What makes her so awful?"
Eastridge's Truest Heart: [She's poor, cheap, and has no limits. She'll do anything for money.]
My hand paused, and the polish streaked over the edge of my nail.
'He's insulting me? Fine. Just wait.'
"Don't be mad, babe. People like that have never seen how the other half lives. Just ignore her," I soothed him insincerely.
Eastridge's Truest Heart: [You're so much better. Sweet, innocent, and not materialistic.]
He sent a heart.
I looked at the screen and nearly laughed out loud.
'Sweet, innocent, and not materialistic? Your 30,000 dollars is still sitting in my purse.'
That weekend, Mason invited me to an amusement park.
I deliberately wore flats, planning to make him suffer.
As soon as we arrived, I pointed to the tallest giant pendulum ride.
"Babe, I want to ride that!"
Mason's face paled.
"Foxy, that looks dangerous. Let's ride the carousel instead."
"But I don't want to. I want to ride that one. Don't tell me you're scared, babe?" I taunted.
He gritted his teeth.
"Who says I'm scared? Let's go!"
A few minutes later, the pendulum spun wildly through the air.
I screamed with excitement beside him while Mason clutched the safety harness, his face chalk-white and his eyes screwed shut.
When we got off, his legs were so weak that he had to lean over a trash can and vomit until there was nothing left.
I handed him a bottle of water and fought back my laughter.
"Are you okay, babe? Why don't we go on the roller coaster next?"
He waved both hands frantically.
"N-no more rides. Let's go to the haunted house."
I arched an eyebrow.
'A haunted house? Are you sure?'
Inside, the lights were dim.
An actor dressed as a zombie suddenly leaped out.
Mason flinched and instinctively tried to hide behind me.
I grabbed the inside of his thigh and twisted the flesh as hard as I could.
"Ahhh!" His bloodcurdling scream was scarier than the zombie.
"Babe, I'm terrified!" I threw myself into his arms and pretended to tremble.
His features twisted with pain, but he still forced himself to pat my back.
"Don't be afraid. I'm here."
I buried my face against his chest, my shoulders shaking as holding back my laughter made my stomach hurt.
The following weekend, I put on my heavy makeup and a bright red dress, then went to meet Mason at the mall he had chosen.
The moment he saw me, his expression darkened.
"Foxy, isn't your makeup a little... heavy? Other people date without makeup."
Panic flashed through me.
Without makeup, my disguise would be dead on arrival!
"You don't like me!" I instantly launched into my performance, pretending I was about to cry. "I spent three hours on my makeup, and you hate it! You don't love me anymore!"
"No, that's not what I meant..." he explained helplessly.
To shut him up, I dragged him into a luxury boutique.
"Babe, I want this bag and that necklace!"
I pointed at item after item. By the time we checked out, the total came to more than 15,000 dollars.
Mason's hand actually shook as he swiped his card.
"Foxy, aren't you... spending a little fast?"
"Didn't you say you would support me? What, am I already too expensive for you?" I deliberately pouted.
He gritted his teeth. "No. As long as you're happy."
Back at the dorm, I immediately listed everything on a secondhand marketplace at half price. It sold out in seconds.
Seeing the sharply increased balance in my bank account, I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
But no one can play with fire forever without getting burned.
One night, I went to the internet cafe to stream. I had just changed my clothes and put on the wig, but before I could apply my makeup, a sudden cramp stabbed through my abdomen.
My period had probably started.
Clutching my stomach, I grabbed my bag and rushed out to buy sanitary pads without even stopping to do my makeup.
The moment I burst through the door, I collided with a solid chest.
"Watch where you're—" The man's curse broke off abruptly.
I looked up and met Mason's stunned eyes.
I was wearing a wavy pink wig and an extremely revealing sequined dress, but no makeup.
Mason seized my wrist. Through gritted teeth, he said my name.
"Ella?"
