Chapter 2: The Acid Current

1265 Words
"Where is your arrogance now, Billie?" The mocking echo of Stefanie faded away into the damp silence of the sub-basement, leaving only the dripping of toxic fluids and the ragged gasps of a dying man. Billie lay motionless amidst piles of discarded scrap metal, his back an open canyon of torn flesh and scorched tissue. The freezing air of Vespera City's lower strata bit into his exposed nerves, threatening to lock up his heart permanently. He could feel the warmth of his own blood pooling beneath him, mixing with the oily grime of the industrial floor. "Not yet," Billie hissed through blood-stained teeth, his voice a gravelly rasp that scraped against his throat. He forced his mind to anchor onto the pure, unadulterated hatred burning deep within his chest. That hatred was the only thing keeping the darkness from dragging him down into permanent unconsciousness. With slow, agonizing deliberation, he twitched his right fingers, testing to see if his nervous system was still responsive. A searing bolt of agony shot up his arm, causing him to grit his teeth so hard a molar cracked under the pressure. He could not afford the luxury of passing out, not when Haaland and Stefanie were celebrating his supposed demise upstairs. Using his elbows as leverage, he began to drag his mangled lower body across the concrete floor. Every inch of movement felt as though salt was being rubbed directly into an open, festering wound. "I will survive," he muttered like a monastic prayer, pulling his heavy frame forward inch by excruciating inch. Directly ahead of him, half-hidden behind a rusted generator, lay the gaping circular opening of a primary acid drainage pipe. Greenish-white fumes hissed from the mouth of the pipe, carrying a corrosive stench that burned the inside of his nostrils. It was a suicidal route for any ordinary human, but for Billie, it was the only pathway away from the smelting facility's search parties. He reached the edge of the pipe and let his limp body slide headfirst into the damp, sloping interior. The interior walls were slick with industrial runoff and diluted sulfuric acid, which immediately reacted with the raw lacerations on his back. A scream tore from his lungs, bouncing off the metallic curves of the drainage tunnel in a distorted wave of sound. The burning physical agony was indescribable, tearing through his muscle fibers and searing his nervous system with white-hot intensity. "Damn it! Burn! Just burn!" he wept tears of pure fury, clawing blindly at the slippery floor of the pipe to propel himself deeper inside. The acid ate into his torn flesh, cauterizing the wounds through sheer chemical torture while simultaneously pushing him to the absolute brink of madness. Instead of breaking his spirit, the excruciating pain acted as a crude forge, hardening his resolve into unbreakable steel. His vision swam with dark spots, and his heart hammered erratically against his fractured ribs like a trapped bird. He kept pulling himself forward through the darkness, leaving a smeared trail of crimson and sweat along the metallic conduit. The current of the drainage pipe grew stronger, carrying toxic runoff that threatened to sweep his unconscious form away into the main sewer network. He locked his fingers into a rusted seam in the metal flooring, anchoring his weight against the rushing chemical stream. His muscles trembled violently from exhaustion and blood loss, threatening to give out at any second. "Haaland... Stefanie... I am coming back for every drop of this blood," Billie whispered into the pitch-black void, his voice dripping with venom. The sheer force of his vendetta acted as a psychological shield, blocking out the agonizing signals screaming from his ruined body. He released his grip on the seam and let the acidic current carry him forward into the deeper, uncharted sectors of the underground slums. The chemical burns were spreading across his shoulders, turning his skin pale and raw under the assault of the toxic runoff. Yet, as the cold subterranean waters rushed over his face, his breathing steadied into a slow, rhythmic cadence. He refused to die in a forgotten gutter like a stray dog discarded by masters who grew tired of its loyalty. Every heartbeat felt like a hammer striking an anvil, shaping a new, ruthless entity from the ashes of the old Billie. The drainage tunnel sloped downward steeply, plunging into complete pitch-black darkness as he was swept away toward the industrial periphery. His fingers scraped frantically against the wet walls, trying to find a grip before he was hurled into the main underground vortex. A sharp protrusion caught his shoulder, tearing away more flesh, but he used the resistance to swing his body toward a narrow maintenance ledge. He hauled his upper torso onto the rusted platform, coughing up mouthfuls of black, chemical-tainted water that burned his throat. Lying flat on his stomach with his ruined back exposed to the damp air, he stared into the impenetrable gloom ahead of him. Faint footsteps echoed from a distant maintenance bridge far above, belonging to the city enforcers patrolling the perimeter. Billie dragged himself further beneath the shadow of a massive concrete pylon, silencing his breathing until his lungs burned for oxygen. The enforcers' voices drifted down faintly through a ventilation grate, discussing the night's quotas and the closure of the smelting plant sector. "Did you hear about the mess at the upper foundry? Some stray got dropped into the furnace," one guard muttered lazily as his boots clicked away. Billie's lips curled into a grim, mirthless smile in the darkness, a cold expression that promised absolute ruin to everyone involved. "They think I am ashes, but the fire only forged me into something they cannot kill," he whispered to the empty, echoing cavern. He tested his legs, finding that his left knee was severely dislocated and his back was nothing short of a charred, bleeding ruin. Walking was out of the question, meaning he would have to crawl across the miles of subterranean tunnels separating the industrial sector from the outer slums. The realization would have broken any normal man, but Billie's mind was now a frozen wasteland devoid of fear or despair. He planted his palms firmly against the cold concrete, ignoring the agonizing protests of his battered skeleton, and dragged his frame another foot forward. The journey out of the depths was going to be a living hell, but it was a hell he willingly embraced to reach his ultimate destination of retribution. Hours bled into one another as he crawled through the labyrinth of pipes, his consciousness flickering like a dying candle in a storm. Just as the last vestiges of his strength began to fade and his vision blurred into a complete, suffocating blackness, a faint flickering light appeared far ahead. It was a dim, yellow glow emanating from a heavy iron door set into the concrete wall at the end of the drainage line. A crude sign painted on the door read: [AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY - HAZARDOUS WASTE RETRIEVAL] Billie used his remaining ounce of strength to pull himself toward the heavy threshold, leaving a thick trail of blood in his wake. He raised a trembling, blood-soaked fist and struck the rusted iron panel three weak times before his fingers uncurled completely. As his eyes rolled back and the final thread of his awareness snapped, a heavy metallic clank echoed from behind the door. The bolts slid open with a sharp screech, and an old, gruff voice muttered from the threshold, "Well, look what the industrial acid spat out onto my doorstep tonight."
