The Rooftop Escape

686 Words
*Sam’s POV* Desperation clawed at my mind, my only thought now was escape. I was suffocating in this twisted prison, but as I scanned the room, I noticed a small, narrow stairwell tucked into the corner, winding up. I ran for it, hearing the scraping of the puppets’ relentless footsteps echoing behind me. Up and up, I climbed, my legs burning with exhaustion, my breath ragged. My mind raced with fragments of plans, none of them making sense, but I knew I had to reach the top. Finally, I burst through a rusted metal door and stumbled onto the roof. The night sky stretched wide above me, a blanket of darkness dotted with stars, offering a stark contrast to the horrors below. The wind whipped around me, carrying a strange metallic scent that clung to the air. I took in a deep breath, feeling a rush of cold air in my lungs, and let it steady my nerves, if only for a moment. It felt like I was standing on the edge of the world, teetering between escape and the abyss. But I didn’t have long. Shadows danced at the edges of the roof’s access door as the puppets crawled and clawed their way after me, their inhuman forms twisted and relentless. I backed up, scanning my surroundings. The roof was wide and mostly empty, save for a few rusted metal crates and debris scattered around. I was trapped, with nowhere to go but down the long drop that loomed over the edge of the building. I took a step back, my mind racing. If I could just keep them away, maybe I’d have a chance to escape, to find another way down. But as the puppets emerged, their grins widening, I knew that I was running out of time. Then I saw it—a metal ladder bolted to the side of the building, just a few feet away, leading down. I didn’t think. I just ran, dodging left and right as the puppets lunged at me, their twisted fingers clawing at the air. I reached the ladder and clambered over the edge, starting my descent. The cold rungs cut into my hands, but I forced myself to keep going, ignoring the sharp pains as my fingers slipped and burned with every step. Halfway down, a puppet appeared above me, staring down with its hollow, painted eyes. It tilted its head, grinning, and I felt a surge of horror as it began to climb down after me, its movements jerky and stiff, yet alarmingly fast. The rooftop was still too far above to return to, and the ground below loomed like an endless void. *Keep moving,* I told myself, gritting my teeth as I pushed onward. But then, another puppet appeared below me, climbing up with that same chilling precision. I was trapped between them, my only options to go back up to the hellish asylum or face whatever awaited me below. I took a deep breath, my hands slipping on the cold metal, and made a split-second decision. *Leap.* I kicked off the ladder with all the strength I had, aiming for a pile of broken crates and debris on the ground below. The world blurred around me as I fell, the night sky spinning above. Pain exploded through my body as I hit the ground, my vision going white as agony radiated through my limbs. For a moment, I couldn’t move, my body refusing to respond. I gasped, struggling to breathe as I forced myself to sit up, ignoring the sharp pain in my ribs. The puppets were still on the ladder, but they paused, their heads twisting as they watched me with cold, lifeless eyes. I scrambled to my feet, limping as I took off into the night, the heavy silence of the asylum fading behind me. I didn’t know where I was headed, or if I could even escape, but as I ran through the shadowed alleys and dark streets, I felt a glimmer of hope flicker inside me. The nightmare hadn’t ended, but at least, for now, I was free.
