A Sudden Fall

352 Words
The night it all came crashing down began like any other. Samantha had just wrapped up her evening run, her breath visible in the crisp autumn air. Halloween was only a few days away, and the city was alive with decorations—grinning pumpkins, fake cobwebs, and children laughing in costume. She loved this time of year, not for its festivities, but for the brief anonymity it granted. In a mask or hood, no one recognized Bella Star. She could be just another face in the crowd. But as she walked back to her apartment, she noticed something was wrong. A black van idled at the corner of her street, its headlights off. Her instincts screamed danger, but before she could react, figures emerged from the shadows. They were quick, well-coordinated—professionals. A cloth pressed over her mouth, the chemical scent of chloroform overwhelming her senses. Samantha fought, her years of training kicking in, but there were too many of them. Her vision blurred, her muscles weakened, and she collapsed into darkness. When she woke, she was in the back of the van, her hands bound. Panic surged through her veins, but she forced herself to stay calm. She strained against the ropes, testing their strength, and memorized every detail she could: the van’s rocking motion, the faint hum of an engine, the occasional muffled voices of her captors. She didn’t recognize them, but she didn’t need to. This had her father’s fingerprints all over it. The van eventually stopped, and she was dragged into a dilapidated building on the outskirts of nowhere. The walls were peeling, the air heavy with mildew and rot. Her captors exchanged brief instructions before leaving her alone in a dimly lit room. She didn’t stay there long. Years of boxing had honed her strength and resilience, and after several grueling minutes of struggling, she managed to free herself from the ropes. With no time to waste, she slipped into the dark corridors of the building, desperate to find an exit. That was when she realized this wasn’t just a hideout—it was a nightmare.
