She shakes her head immediately, then glances at her sister for reassurance. The older girl nods slightly, urging her on.
Miley turns back to me. “He didn’t have a face.”
My eyes widen. “What?”
She pinches her fingers together in her lap, her gaze dropping. “I know you don’t believe me.” Her voice wobbles. “But I saw him up close. He didn’t have a mouth or eyes and his face was just…I swear, I’m not lying, he was—” Her breath breaks as tears stream down her face. “He was so scary and he just kept…he kept—”
“It’s okay.” I reach out and put my hand on her shoulder. “It’s okay. You don’t have to finish. You’re safe right now. Nobody is going to hurt you here.”
She cries for a minute, her sister rubbing slow circles on her back. Slowly, she stops.
