LAYLA’S POV I blink. “Sorry?” “Yes.” “What do you mean yes?” I burst out. “I mean I knew you were there, so I walked into the garden to meet you.” Goosebumps race across my skin. Still, any second now he's going to laugh and tell me this is a joke. Any second now he's going to admit he's screwing with me. Any second— Nothing. “Why?” is all I manage. “Why were you looking for me? Why did you pretend not to know me?” My voice climbs higher with every question. “That whole time, you let me believe we randomly ran into each other.” Edward's gaze drops briefly to our joined hands. Then he lets out a humorless laugh. “Why did I pretend not to know you?” “Yes.” His jaw ticks. “Maybe because your name was in my mother's journal when I wasn’t sure she'd ever met you a day in her life.”
