Chapter 4 Acacia was not taken with the four birds who were Hypnos’s siblings, but the bone-faced raven was the one that made her lips curl back to bare her teeth. The ivory-white hawk with a steel beak that had been more adamant about pecking at her cage bars that the others, had given up the effort but she paced back and forth on her perch, analyzing the space around her. Another bird was green and purple, clutching a golden apple in its talons, and she preened and cleaned her feathers with an oddly calm air. The third, a scrawny brown gull that had lobster claws instead of wings, spent most of his time grousing. The raven one stared, and that was all. Stared with glassy cataract-pale eyes, wings tightly wrapped against its body, focused unceasingly on Acacia. She had done her best
