“…because I knew something must have gone horribly wrong,” the cat said, and she paused to lick her paw and then pat down her right ear. “Baba Yaga had placed an enchantment on me to look like her while I watched after Ms. Florence. Ms. Florence thought I was your abuela. What a fun word, abuela. I think I’ll start calling Baba abeula. But when her enchantment stopped working out of the blue, I thought something horrible happened to her. But on the other hand, I could still talk, which I normally cannot do as a cat. So, her magic must have been skewed, as she sometimes says. And when her magic gets skewed, it means someone is messing with a great source of magic. Most magic comes from the Curtain, so maybe someone was playing with it.”
