Chapter 3 - The Shocking News

MARAH Alpha Dustin. He was the one who saved me. He was the leader of the Dark Moon Pack. Cold and always serious, he commanded respect and fear in equal measure. As for Shane, he was the beta, Alpha Dustin's right hand and best friend. Shane was the opposite of Dustin—warm and friendly. I often saw them together, an odd yet effective duo. Now, I was a maid in his mansion. It had been a month. I didn't have any difficulties working as a maid; my time with Trent had given me plenty of experience. In Trent's home, my role had been more that of a maid than a wife. Here, though, I got along well with the other maids. It might be strange to say, but I felt more at home here than I had ever felt before. I balanced the tray carefully as I walked down the hallway to Alpha Dustin's office. It was mid-morning, and I was bringing tea and snacks for him and Shane. The polished wood of the tray felt warm against my hands, the porcelain cups clinking softly with each step. I knocked on the door and entered when I heard Dustin's deep voice granting me permission. Shane smiled warmly at me as I opened the door. His friendly demeanor always put me at ease. I carefully placed a cup of tea in front of him, and he nodded, saying, "Thank you, Marah." I then moved towards Dustin, who sat at his desk, engrossed in some paperwork. His icy blue eyes flicked up to meet mine briefly, and I could feel the weight of his gaze. Just as I was about to place the cup in front of him, a sudden wave of nausea hit me. I covered my mouth with one hand, the other holding the cup shaking slightly. I closed my eyes, hoping the nausea would pass, but it only worsened. I started to feel dizzy, the room spinning around me. Shane's voice broke through the fog. "Marah, are you okay?" I wanted to say I was fine, but I knew I needed to get out of there immediately. I managed to put the cup in front of Alpha Dustin a bit too harshly, the porcelain clattering against the wood of the desk. I covered my mouth again, feeling the bile rise in my throat. Before I could make it out of the office, I threw up right there on the floor, coughing and gasping for air. Mortified, I looked up at Alpha Dustin, expecting his anger. His expression was unreadable, but I could see a flash of annoyance in his eyes. I knew I was in trouble. Shane was the one who quickly came to my aid, helping me to my feet. "You shouldn't be working if you're sick," he said gently, his arm steadying me. "I'm sorry," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "I didn't know it would be this bad." Shane's brow furrowed with concern. "How long have you been feeling like this?" I hesitated, thinking back. "About a week or so," I admitted. In truth, I had been feeling unwell for a week now. It started with a mild dizziness that I brushed off as exhaustion. But then the nausea hit, sometimes so strong that I could barely stand without feeling like I was going to faint. I also felt so tired, which was strange because the workload I had here was nothing compared to what I endured with Trent. At Trent's place, I was barely ever sick. I thought this was just some passing bug, but it seemed like it was more serious than I wanted to admit. To both Shane and my surprise, Alpha Dustin spoke up. "She needs to be checked by the doctor." Shane turned to him, surprised. "What?" Dustin's expression didn't change. "Should I repeat myself?" Shane shook his head quickly. "Of course not, Alpha. I'll ask the doctor to come and check on Marah soon." As Shane helped me to my feet, his arm steadying me, I glanced at Alpha Dustin. His sharp gaze met mine, and I quickly looked down, feeling a mix of gratitude and fear. His eyes held an intensity that was hard to read. Was he angry, concerned, or just annoyed by the disruption? I couldn't tell, and it made me uneasy. Shane guided me out of the office, his grip firm yet gentle. "Come on, let's get you to your room," he said. The next thing I knew, I was back in my room. As we walked, I noticed the glances from my fellow maids. Their eyes followed us, curiosity and concern etched on their faces. I offered them a weak smile, but it was clear they were worried about me. Shane helped me onto my bed before leaving, and I lay there for what felt like an eternity, trying to calm my racing thoughts. Not long after, the door opened again, and the doctor entered, followed closely by Alpha Dustin. The sight of him made my heart skip a beat. He stood tall and imposing, his presence filling the small room. The doctor, an older man with a kind face, approached my bed and began his examination. "Let's see what's going on here," he said gently, taking out his stethoscope and other instruments. Alpha Dustin stood by the door, arms crossed, watching the entire process with an unreadable expression. After a thorough check-up, the doctor looked at me with a small smile. "You're fine. In fact, it's good news." I waited for him to say more, my heart pounding in my chest. "Good news?" I echoed, my voice shaky. The doctor nodded. "Yes, dear. You're pregnant. Congratulations." The words hung in the air, and for a moment, I felt like the world had stopped. Pregnant? Me? I couldn't believe it. I stared at the doctor, my mouth dry and my mind racing. "Me? Pregnant?" I stuttered, my voice barely above a whisper. "Yes," the doctor confirmed, still smiling. "You're going to have a baby." "No, it can't be," I muttered, my hands trembling. I looked at Alpha Dustin, hoping for some sign of understanding or comfort, but his face remained impassive, his eyes piercing and cold. "Leave us," Alpha Dustin said to the doctor, his voice calm but commanding. The doctor nodded and packed up his things. "If you need anything, just let me know," he said before leaving the room. I was left alone with Alpha Dustin, the silence between us thick and heavy. I didn't know what to say or how to react. My mind was a whirlwind of emotions—shock, fear, confusion. I couldn't bring myself to look at him, my eyes fixed on the floor. "You," his voice cut through the silence, sharp and precise. "Look at me." Slowly, I lifted my gaze, meeting his eyes. They were as cold as ever, giving nothing away. I felt small and vulnerable under his scrutiny. "You didn't know you were pregnant?" he asked, his tone neutral. I shook my head, my throat tight with unshed tears. "No, I didn't. I... I didn't expect this." His eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of something darker crossing his features. "Your carelessness could have harmed my baby," he said, his voice now edged with an accusation that felt like a slap. My heart skipped a beat, and I looked up at him so quickly I felt dizzy. "Your baby?" I echoed, my voice barely more than a whisper. He took a step closer, his presence overwhelming the small room. His eyes bore into mine, a mix of frustration and something else I couldn't quite place. "Yes, Marah. My baby. We both know it’s mine. I am the father." The weight of his words settled over me like a heavy blanket. I felt my world shift, the ground beneath me seeming less stable. As I struggled to find my voice, Alpha Dustin's expression hardened. "You better keep this baby safe, Marah, or you will bear the consequences," he said, his tone carrying a warning that sent a chill down my spine. My mind was spinning as I tried to process what he had just said. Memories of the night we spent together flashed through my mind….
