The Queen's Blood Pact

1216 Words
The witch's chains burned colder than rogue ice. Lyra knelt in the circle of salt and bone, blood dripping from her palms onto the ancient stone that had not felt royal blood in three centuries. "Say it," the witch hissed, black eyes glowing like dying embers. "Say you choose power over mercy. Say it and the pact is sealed." Lyra's wolf screamed inside her, claws tearing at her ribs. We could have been Luna. We could have had pups. We could have been loved. Images flashed behind her eyes. Kade's smirk as he ripped the mating bond from her throat. His hand shoving her toward the rogue fence. The word "barren" echoing as the pack howled for her blood. Mercy had gotten her nothing but scars. "Mercy is for the weak," Lyra whispered. The words tasted like ash and freedom. Then louder, until her voice cracked the stone: "I choose power." The ground split open with a sound like bones breaking. Crimson light shot up her arms, twisting through the silver scars Kade's chains left on her wrists during the rejection ceremony. The silver burned, melted, reformed. Pain tore through her as the marks turned gold. Not the dull gold of coins. The molten gold of a crown forged in blood and betrayal. BURNED INTO HER SKIN, letters appeared one by one: Queen of the Forgotten. Lyra screamed. Not from pain, but from release. For the first time since she was twelve years old and claimed as Kade's mate, she felt no chains. No bond pulling her down. No alpha voice in her head. Only hunger. Only purpose. Only power. "Rise, Lyra Moonvale," the witch said, and for the first time her voice held respect instead of pity. "You are no longer Omega. No longer rejected. No longer barren." The witch pressed a blade to Lyra's palm, cutting deeper. More blood fell. "You are the first Blood Queen in 300 years. But power demands price, child." Lyra stood. Her legs didn't shake. Her back didn't bend. The golden scars pulsed with each heartbeat, and with each pulse the cave grew brighter. Shadows that had hidden for centuries retreated. "Name the price," Lyra said. Her voice was not her own anymore. It was deeper. Older. It was the voice of every discarded Luna who came before her. The witch's smile was sharp as broken glass. "To awaken your pack, to claim the throne stolen from your mother's line, you must spill the blood of the one who marked you for death." Outside the cave, wolf howls echoed through the night. Not rogues. Not wild beasts. Kade's pack had found them. A voice boomed through the night - Kade's voice, cold and final and achingly familiar: "Bring me the witch. And her mongrel. Alive. I want to see her face when I chain her again." Lyra picked up the witch's dagger. It was heavier now. The blade glowed faint gold to match her scars. Her wolf rose inside her, no longer cowering. No longer begging for Kade's approval. This wolf had teeth made of broken promises and claws made of vengeance. Let him come, she thought. Let him see what he threw away. The cave door exploded inward. Wood and stone flew like leaves in a storm. Kade stepped through, silver chains in hand, flanked by his six best warriors. Moonlight caught the alpha mark on his neck - the same mark he tore from her throat weeks ago. He froze mid-step. His eyes raked over her. Took in the golden scars glowing like sunrise on her skin. The way she stood without chains. The power rolling off her in waves that made his wolves whimper and drop to their bellies. One warrior gasped. "Alpha... her eyes..." Lyra's eyes were no longer silver. They burned gold, like twin suns. "Hello, Kade," Lyra said softly. The dagger spun once in her fingers before she caught it by the blade. Blood welled, but didn't fall. The gold in her veins stopped it. "You threw away a barren Omega," she said. Each word hit him like a physical blow. "You called me weak. You called me worthless. You fed me to rogues for sport." She tilted her head, studying the man who broke her. The man her wolf still mourned at night. "But you just found a Queen." Kade's wolf growled low in his chest. His eyes flickered red - challenge accepted. The silver chains in his hands began to smoke. "You think some witch's trick makes you my equal?" he snarled. "You're still mine, Lyra. Blood bond doesn't break that easy." Lyra smiled. For the first time in months, it was not a broken smile. It was sharp. It was royal. "Touch me with those chains again, Alpha," she whispered, and the cave temperature dropped twenty degrees. Frost spread from her feet across the stone floor. "And let's see which bond breaks first. Yours... or your neck." The dagger ignited with gold flame. Kade threw the silver chains. They sang through the air, aimed straight for Lyra's throat where his mark used to be. Lyra didn't flinch. She raised the dagger. Gold flame met silver metal. The chains didn't bind her. They melted. Liquid silver dripped to the stone floor and hissed into nothing, sizzling like water on hot iron. Gasps echoed through the cave. Three of Kade's warriors stumbled back, clutching their heads. The broken blood bond between Kade and Lyra was snapping, and the backlash hit them all. Kade roared, dropping to one knee as pain tore through him. For ten years that bond was his leash on her. Now it was a whip cracking back in his face. Lyra walked toward him. Each step left golden footprints that faded slowly, like embers. The temperature kept dropping. Her breath fogged in the air, but sweat ran down Kade's face. "Ten years you called me yours," Lyra said, stopping just out of his reach. The dagger's flame cast shadows across his snarling face. "Ten years I wore your name like a collar." She knelt. Not in submission. In dominance. Eye to eye with the Alpha who thought he owned her. "Now watch," she whispered, and pressed the dagger's flat side to his chest, right over his heart. "Watch what happens when the collar breaks." The gold flame jumped from blade to skin. Kade convulsed as his alpha mark - the crescent moon on his neck - began to fade. Not disappear. Fade, like old ink, replaced by something new. Something golden and ancient. His wolf howled inside him. Not in rage. In fear. Because for the first time in his life, Alpha Kade Silvermane felt what it was like to be powerless. Lyra stood, pulling the dagger back. The flame died, but her scars burned brighter. "Chapter closed, Alpha," she said. "But the book isn't finished." She turned her back on him - the ultimate insult to a wolf Alpha - and walked toward the cave exit. "Seize her!" Kade choked out, but his warriors didn't move. They were still staring at Lyra's back, at the golden crown-shaped scar now glowing between her shoulder blades. Power rolled off her in waves, and every wolf in that cave knew it. The discarded Luna was gone. The Blood Queen had arrived.
