BLOOD MOON MARK

793 Words
The rogues should have killed her. Lyra lay in the mud, blood mixing with rain. Kael Silvermane's scent filled her nose - pine, smoke, and something ancient. The rogue Alpha who saved her was now watching her like prey. "You shouldn't be alive," Kael whispered, kneeling. His golden eyes glowed in the dark. "No human survives the rogue pit." Lyra coughed. "I'm not human." The words hung between them. Truth and danger. Kael's hand shot to her throat, but not to choke. His thumb brushed over the mark there. A crescent moon birthmark that burned silver in the moonlight. His breath hitched. "Impossible." Thunder rolled. The moon broke through clouds - red as blood. Blood Moon. Once every 100 years. The night werewolf law breaks. Lyra's back arched off the ground. Pain tore through her as if claws ripped her from inside. She screamed. But it wasn't her voice. It was her wolf. The rogues circled, sniffing the air. They smelled it too. Her change. "She's turning," one hissed. "Kill her before the moon claims her." Kael moved faster than sight. His claws came out - black and lethal. Three rogues dropped before they blinked. "Touch her and die," he growled. But there were twenty more. Lyra felt it happening. Bones breaking. Skin tearing. The beast inside her that her Alpha mate said didn't exist. He'd thrown her to rogues because she was "wolf-less". A disgrace. He was wrong. Fur burst from her skin. White as snow, marked with silver scars. Her jaw elongated. Fangs dropped. The pain peaked... then vanished. Power replaced it. She stood. 7 feet tall. Wolf the size of a horse. Eyes glowing silver-gold. The rogues stumbled back, claws scraping mud. Kael stared, chest heaving. Blood dripped from his claws. "A White Wolf Luna. Extinct for 500 years." Lyra's new voice rumbled from her throat, deep and ancient. "You threw me away," she said, and her voice was two voices now - hers and her wolf's. "Now watch what you lost." The Blood Moon reached its peak above them. Red light flooded the forest. Power crashed through Lyra like a tidal wave. Her scars lit up silver, burning patterns across her skin. The rogues howled and attacked all at once. Twenty wolves. Teeth and claws and madness. Kael moved first. His claws slashed, black and fast. Three rogues dropped before they hit the ground. "Stay behind me!" he roared. Lyra didn't stay. She couldn't. Her wolf lunged. Seven feet of muscle and fury. She tore through rogues like paper. Fangs snapped bone. Claws ripped fur. Blood painted the snow red. One rogue grabbed Kael from behind. Lyra saw it. Time slowed. She crossed the space in one leap and snapped his neck with one bite. His body dropped, twitching. When the last rogue fell, silence returned. Only breathing. Only the drip of blood on snow. Only the Blood Moon watching. Lyra shifted back. Pain shot through her as bones cracked and reformed. She fell to her knees, naked and bleeding. Exhausted but alive. Stronger than she'd ever been. Kael pulled off his jacket in one motion and wrapped it around her shoulders. His hands lingered. Warm. "Your mate discarded you," he said quietly, voice rough. "Called you wolf-less. A disgrace." His golden eyes met hers. "But I won't." Lyra pulled the jacket tighter. She met his gaze. The Blood Moon above made everything feel sharp. Inevitable. "You saved me, Kael Silvermane. But I'm not yours to keep." Kael smiled. Slow. Dangerous. The smile of a predator who'd found his match. "I don't keep women, Lyra Moonvale. I hunt with them." Before she could answer, his head snapped up. So did hers. Ears twitching. Wolves howled in the distance. Not rogues. Organized. Many. Getting closer. Kael's face darkened. His claws came out again. "Your Alpha mate. He felt your power awaken. He felt the bond break." Lyra stood, Kael's jacket falling to her hips. Silver scars now marked her skin in patterns like ancient runes. Her crescent birthmark glowed bright silver at her throat. A Luna's mark. Not his. "Let him come," she whispered. Her voice was steady now. Cold. She touched her neck. The mark pulsed once, twice. Power hummed under her skin. "Tonight," Lyra said, and the wind carried her words, "the discarded Luna becomes the hunted Alpha's nightmare." Kael stepped beside her. Shoulder to shoulder. "Then we hunt him first." Three miles away, in a castle of stone and silver, her ex-mate Alpha stopped mid-step. Clutched his chest. Gasped. He didn't know why blood dripped from his mouth. He didn't know the Blood Moon had chosen a new Queen. He didn't know Lyra Moonvale was no longer his to discard. But he would soon. TO BE CONTINUED...
