Captured By Blood

The blood on her hands wasn't hers. Lyra stumbled as rogue claws dug into her arms. The forest around her blurred into shadows and teeth. Kael's roar tore through the night behind her, but it was too late. Three rogue wolves had her pinned before he could reach them. "Let her go!" Kael lunged forward, claws out, eyes burning gold. The rogue Alpha stepped from the darkness. Massive. Scarred. His silver hair hung to his shoulders and his eyes... his eyes were the same grey as Lyra's. "Welcome home, princess," he said. His voice was rough like stone dragged over steel. "I've been waiting 18 years." Kael slammed into the Alpha, but the rogue didn't even flinch. He caught Kael's fist mid-air and twisted. Bone cracked. Kael howled and dropped to his knees. "Kael!" Lyra screamed. Her wolf surged forward, desperate to shift, to fight. But the moment she reached for the change, cold metal wrapped around her wrists. Silver chains. They burned her skin instantly. "Golden chains," the rogue Alpha whispered, leaning close. His breath smelled like iron and old lies. "The same ones your father used to hide you from the Alpha King." Lyra's wolf snarled inside her. No. He abandoned me. Everyone abandoned me. "Your father didn't abandon you," the Alpha said, reading her face like an open book. "He hid you. The Alpha King wanted you dead the moment you were born. Wolf-less and female? You were supposed to be a threat he could control. But you weren't wolf-less. You were wolf more." The rogues dragged her deeper into the forest. Kael tried to follow but another rogue knocked him down with a silver blade to the shoulder. "Don't touch him!" Lyra thrashed against the chains. The burn was agony, but the rage was worse. The rogue Alpha stopped and turned to her. For a moment, his hard expression softened. "I am Alpha Marcus. Your mother's brother. And you, Lyra, are the true heir to the blood moon pack." They broke through the trees and Lyra's breath caught. A camp spread out below them. Not the savage den she expected. There were tents, fires, children laughing. Rogue wolves trained in the clearing. Women sharpened weapons. This was a pack. A broken one, but a pack. "They're not monsters," Marcus said quietly. "We were the ones your father betrayed. He chose the Alpha King over his own blood. Chose to hide you instead of fight for us." "You're lying," Lyra whispered, but her voice shook. Marcus knelt in front of her despite the chains. He was close enough now that she could see the scar that split his left eye. The same scar her mother had in the only painting she'd ever seen. "Your mother died protecting you," he said. "Her last words were 'Keep her safe. She's wolf more. She'll end the war or start it.'" Lyra's chest tightened. All these years thinking she was unwanted. Wolf-less. A mistake. And now this stranger was telling her she was a weapon? An heir? "Why bring me here now?" she asked. "If I'm so important, why wait 18 years?" "Because the Alpha King is moving," Marcus stood. "He knows what you are now. After the blood moon ritual. After you killed in the arena. He's sending his best hunters. If we don't act first, we all die." He pulled a dagger from his belt. The blade shimmered black in the firelight. Lyra's wolf went dead silent inside her. Danger. Ancient danger. Marcus sliced his palm open. Blood welled up, dark and thick. Then he grabbed Lyra's chained wrist and cut her palm too. "No," Kael's voice was weak from the ground. "Don't do it Marcus. That blood... it's cursed." "Good," Marcus smiled, showing sharp teeth. "Let it be cursed. Let it be power." He pressed their bleeding palms together. Pain exploded through Lyra's veins. Fire and ice. Her wolf howled inside her mind, but this time the sound wasn't hers. It was deeper. Older. Hungrier. Visions flashed: A throne of bones. A crown of silver. Wolves bowing to a shadow with grey eyes like hers. "Blood pact complete," Marcus whispered. His blood mixed with hers, sank into her skin. "Now you're one of us. Rogue blood. True blood." The silver chains fell away. But the burn didn't stop. It spread. Up her arms, across her chest, into her heart. Power surged. Dark, wild, intoxicating power. It tasted like vengeance. Like freedom. Like everything she'd been denied. Lyra lifted her head slowly. When she opened her eyes, they weren't grey anymore. They were black. Black with silver fire at the center. For the first time in 18 years, her wolf smiled. And it wasn't Lyra's smile. The power hit her like a tidal wave. Lyra's knees buckled but the rogue Alpha caught her. His hands were strong, calloused, nothing like Kael's gentle grip. This was a warrior's touch. A predator's touch. "Can you feel it?" Marcus whispered in her ear. "The blood moon curse. It runs in your veins. Your mother, your grandmother, all the way back to the first Luna." Lyra tried to speak but her voice came out wrong. Deeper. Two voices layered together. "What... what did you do to me?" "I woke you," Marcus said. He pulled back and studied her black eyes with silver fire. "The Alpha King spent 18 years suppressing your wolf with magic. Weak drugs in your food. Spells on your bedroom. He wanted you tame. Powerless." Kael's groan pulled her attention. He was on the ground, blood pooling under his shoulder from the silver blade. His gold eyes met hers and widened in horror. "Lyra... your eyes..." He tried to stand but collapsed again. Something twisted in Lyra's chest at the sight of him hurt. But the wolf inside didn't care. The wolf saw weakness. Prey. He can't protect you, the wolf whispered. I can. "Don't look at him," Marcus said sharply. "Look at me. Look at your family." Family. The word hit harder than the silver chains. For 18 years Lyra had no one. No pack. No parents. Just rejection and "wolf-less" whispered behind her back. Now this stranger called her family. Showed her a camp full of wolves who looked like her. Grey eyes. Black hair. Strong jaws. One of the rogue women stepped forward. She was old, with braided white hair and scars across her face. She pressed a hand to Lyra's cheek. "You have her eyes," the old woman said, tears in her eyes. "You have Selena's eyes, child. Welcome home, daughter of the blood moon." Lyra wanted to pull away. Wanted to run back to Kael. But the power in her veins felt too good. Too right. For the first time, she didn't feel broken. She felt... complete. Marcus lifted her chin with one finger. "The Alpha King will come for you. He'll bring his army. But now you have an army too. Now you have us." He gestured to the camp. Hundreds of rogue wolves stopped what they were doing and turned to look at her. At their black-eyed princess. "Rise, Lyra of the Blood Moon," Marcus commanded. Every wolf in the camp dropped to one knee. Heads bowed. The sight should've terrified her. But her wolf purred instead. Mine, the wolf thought. All mine. Lyra smiled. And her fangs were longer than they should've been.
