Chapter 5

Laura and Emma settled into their seats on the bus, the hum of morning chatter enveloping them. The familiar jolt of the bus as it started moving felt comforting, a part of their daily routine. They were deep in conversation when suddenly, a bright voice pierced the air. "Hey, Emma!" Emma turned, her face lighting up. "Oh, hi, Sarah! This is my date, Laura," she said, gesturing towards Laura with a proud smile. Laura instinctively reached out to shake Sarah's hand, feeling a mix of curiosity and apprehension. "Nice to meet you," Laura said, trying to keep her tone friendly, though she could sense an underlying tension in the air. Sarah scrutinized Laura, her piercing gaze lingering a moment too long. "I don’t see you around much," she remarked, tilting her head slightly. "I go to High West, just two blocks away," Laura replied, her voice steady despite the unease creeping into her chest. “Ohhh,” Sarah nodded, her smile widening. “Emma and I are in the same class. We’ve been friends for a while now.” Laura’s heart sank a little. She could tell there was history there, and it made her stomach churn. Sarah continued, her tone suddenly more animated. “You know, I’ve always wanted to be a police officer. I need to get straight A's to make it into a good college,” she declared, her eyes sparkling with ambition. “That’s impressive,” Laura said, forcing a smile. But as Sarah spoke, a part of her mind drifted, wondering about the nature of Sarah and Emma's friendship. Then, Sarah launched into a story. “So, Emma and I met through my uncle. She was lost one day, and we’ve been close ever since. A few years ago, we even accidentally kissed,” she laughed, glancing at Laura for a reaction. Emma’s expression shifted, surprise and annoyance mingling across her features. “Uh, Sarah,” she began, but Sarah was already on a roll. “Yeah, and it was hilarious! Emma totally liked me before,” Sarah said with a smirk, her eyes glinting mischievously as she surveyed the scene. Laura felt her cheeks flush, a wave of jealousy and discomfort washing over her. Emma’s gaze darted towards Laura, who was visibly tense. “Sarah, are you okay?” Emma asked, trying to steer the conversation away from the awkward revelation. “Of course! Oh, it’s my stop,” Sarah said, cheerfully oblivious to the tension she had created. “See you later, Laura!” With a wicked smile, she hopped off the bus. Emma got off the bus too. As the bus rolled away, Laura turned to Emma, her heart racing. “Did she really have to bring that up?” she was texting Emma . Emma sighed and , running a hand through her hair. “I’m sorry. Sarah can be… a bit much sometimes.” Emma texted to Laura back. Laura nodded, trying to mask her feelings. “It’s fine. I just didn’t expect all that,” she was texting , staring out the window as the scenery blurred by. Once she reached school, Laura met up with Kim, her bubbly and popular friend. “Hey, Kim, do you know Sarah? She goes to High West, just two blocks away from us,” Laura asked, trying to distract herself from the earlier encounter. Kim’s eyes lit up with recognition. “You mean Sarah with the striped purple and black hair? Just above her shoulders? She likes to smile evilly. Is that her?” Laura felt a strange mix of relief and annoyance. “Yes, that’s her,” she confirmed, crossing her arms defensively. Kim leaned in closer, her voice conspiratorial. “She’s kind of known for being a bit dramatic. Heard she’s got her eye on Emma, too.” Laura’s heart sank again. “What do you mean?” “You know, she’s always hanging around Emma, making sure everyone knows they’re friends. It’s like she wants to be the center of attention,” Kim explained, raising an eyebrow. Laura bit her lip, feeling a knot tighten in her stomach. “I guess I can see that.” “Don’t let her get to you, though,” Kim said, giving Laura a reassuring pat on the shoulder. “Emma likes you. Just focus on that.” Later that day, Laura decided to confront Emma after school. They met at their favorite café, the comforting smell of coffee mingling with fresh pastries. “Emma, can we talk?” Laura said, her voice serious as they sat down. “Of course! What’s on your mind?” Emma asked, looking genuinely curious. “I just… I felt really uncomfortable on the bus today. Sarah’s comments about your past… it bothered me,” Laura admitted, her heart racing. Emma’s expression softened. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize it would upset you. Sarah loves to stir the pot.” “I know, but it seems like she’s trying to insert herself into your life,” Laura pressed, her jealousy creeping back. “What if she still likes you?” Emma laughed lightly, shaking her head. “Laura, I’m with you. Sarah’s just a friend; she thrives on drama. You don’t have to worry about her.” “But it’s not just that,” Laura insisted, leaning forward. “I don’t want to feel like I’m competing for your attention.” Emma’s eyes widened, and she reached across the table, taking Laura’s hand. “You’re not competing. I’m here with you because I want to be. Sarah doesn’t change that.” Laura felt a flicker of hope but couldn’t shake her insecurities. “It just feels like she’s always there, you know? Like she wants to take you back.” “Laura,” Emma said firmly, “you have to trust me. I care about you, not her. She’s just a chapter in my life, and you’re my present and future.” Laura squeezed Emma’s hand, letting the warmth of her touch ease her worries. “Okay, I’ll try. But it’s hard.” “I get it. Just remember that you’re the one I chose,” Emma said, smiling softly. As they finished their coffees, Laura felt a sense of relief. But the nagging jealousy lingered, a reminder of the complexities of young love and friendship. She knew she had to navigate these feelings carefully, not just for herself but for the relationship they were building together. The next day, as the sun rose and painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, Laura and Emma boarded the bus once more. But this time, Laura was determined to confront her feelings head-on. She wouldn’t let Sarah’s shadow loom over their relationship any longer. As they sat together, Emma leaned in, whispering, “Ready for another day?” Laura smiled, a newfound determination in her heart. “Yeah. Let’s make it ours.” And as they rode through the city, hand in hand, Laura knew that together they could face whatever challenges lay ahead—even if that meant dealing with Sarah’s antics along the way. Their budding relationship was not without its challenges. Sarah noticed that Emma spent a lot of time with Laura, and it made her uncomfortable. She regretted rejecting Emma's love back when they had kissed. The memory of that kiss lingered in her mind, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy every time she saw Emma and Laura together. Determined to stir things up, Sarah decided to visit Laura's school. She mingled with a few students, asking about Laura. "Oh, Laura is so sweet," they said, praising her kindness and friendliness. Sarah's jealousy grew, and she felt a twisted satisfaction in her plan. Sarah, who had always been envious of Emma's happiness, started spreading rumors about her. She whispered to anyone who would listen, painting Emma in a negative light. As the rumors spread, Sarah felt a perverse sense of relief and smiled evilly, satisfied with the chaos she was creating. One day, Laura confronted Emma on the bus, her eyes filled with hurt. "Did you hear what Sarah said?" she asked, her voice trembling. Emma's expression hardened. "Don't listen to her, Laura," she said firmly. "She's just trying to cause trouble." But the seed of doubt had been planted. Laura couldn't shake the feeling that there might be some truth to Sarah's words. She started to pull away from Emma, their once warm and easy conversations becoming strained and awkward. Emma noticed the change and felt a pang of worry. She tried to reassure Laura, but the rumors had done their damage. Laura's trust in Emma wavered, and the distance between them grew. Emma felt helpless, watching the person she cared about slip away because of someone else's jealousy and spite. Despite Emma's efforts to bridge the gap, Laura's doubts persisted. The joy and excitement that had marked the beginning of their relationship were overshadowed by uncertainty and mistrust. Emma knew they needed to confront the issue head-on, but she wasn't sure how to repair the damage Sarah had caused. As the days passed, the tension between them became almost unbearable. Emma longed for the days when they could simply enjoy each other's company without the shadow of doubt hanging over them. She hoped that Laura would see through Sarah's lies and remember the bond they had built, but for now, all she could do was wait and hope for a chance to make things right.
