Kayla walked into her room, exhausted from a long day at work. She flipped on the light switch, expecting an empty room. But as the light flooded the space, she was surprised to see her sister Raelle sitting on her bed, waiting for her.
Raelle looked up, her eyes locked on Kayla's. Kayla could see a mix of emotions in her sister's expression - hurt, anger, but also a hint of forgiveness.
"Hey," Raelle said softly, her voice breaking the silence.
Kayla's heart skipped a beat as she realized what was happening. Elle was here to talk, to confront her about what had happened. Kayla felt a wave of nervousness wash over her, but she knew she needed to face this.
"Hey," Kayla replied, her voice barely above a whisper. She dropped her bag on the floor and slowly approached Raelle, her eyes never leaving hers.
Raelle patted the bed beside her, inviting kayla to sit down. kayla hesitated for a moment, then sat down, her hands clasped together in her lap.
Raelle brought out a photo album from beneath a pillow and turned over the first page displaying a picture of her and Kayla. Kayla's eyes widened as she saw the familiar faces of their childhood selves. Raelle pointed to a photo of the two of them, grinning from ear to ear, their arms wrapped around each other. "Remember this, Kayla? We were inseparable back then."
Kayla's gaze softened, and she nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "We were like two peas in a pod."
"yeah" Raelle laughed turning the page, revealing more photos of their family together, birthday parties, and holidays. Kayla's eyes lingered on each image, memories flooding back.
"Look, here's one of our favorite games," Raelle said, pointing to a photo of them playing sand castles on the beach. Kayla chuckled. "Oh, I had forgotten about that! it was always fun."
As they flipped through the album, they saw pictures of their teenage days and laughed as they recalled all the past days. the tension and hurt began to melt away, replaced by warm nostalgia and a deep longing for the closeness they once shared.
Raelle closed the album, her eyes still fixed on the cover page. "you know, I never thought I needed a bestie, because I had you"she said with a quiet laughter "and I thought I was yours too, but best friends don't keep each other in the dark" she finally lifted her eyes to Kayla's "why didn't you tell me what was going on between you" "I don't know, I guess I felt it was totally a wrong thing to hook up with a guy I wasn't dating, and also I'm supposed to be your elder sister so it seemed like an uncharted territory for the both of us" Kayla now fiddling with her fingers said in a small voice. "I didn't think there was an uncharted territory for us" Elle said in a stern voice "well you left and it wasn't the same, I couldn't tell how you'd react, you weren't home and I slept with my closest friend, someone you had a crush on" Kay said with a careful expression, "gosh you remember" Elle whispered turning away "of course I do, you never fantasized about any other boy growing up, and I knew how uncomfortable you two were around each other, I saw the chemistry, I just couldn't understand why he never asked you out" kayla said peering at Elle. Elle shrugged "so between you two, are you like friends with benefits now" Elle looked her straight in the eyes "I really don't know what to call it, we help each other let out excess energy" Kayla laughed nervously. "he was here today, and I told him i'll think about forgiving him, but he wasn't the person that hurt me, you were." Elle said holding her sister's gaze, but then it softened and she sighed "I miss us, Kayla. I miss our bond, our laughter, our secrets shared."
Kayla's voice barely whispered, "Me too Raelle, Me too."
In that moment, the sisters' eyes held a glimmer of hope, a chance to rekindle their relationship and start anew.
"I've been thinking a lot about what happened," Raelle said, her voice filled with emotion. "And I've decided to forgive you, Kay."
Kayla nodded, a lump forming in her throat. She was overwhelmed she got her sister back, she threw her hands around Raelle engulfing her in a stiffling hug,"no more secrets" Elle said her words sounding muffled."no more secrets" Kayla repeated she pulled off and stared at Elle's face tears running down her eyes and Elle's. they both started laughing and wiped each other's tears.
