Maggie cursed softly, quickly changing the subject: “Without Keith’s money, how will you pay for your sister’s care? Why not tell your family? They can help.”
Dora jolted awake, her sorrow fading. She’d completely forgotten about her sister! She pulled herself together: “Not yet. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”
She’d survived harder times three years ago. Now that she had a steady income, she’d find a way. Her mom had just recovered from illness, and her sister was still in a coma—she couldn’t worry her family now.
After chatting for a while, Dora felt better. She drifted off to sleep again, waking only when Tristan Tang called. She dragged her tired body downstairs.
Tristan waited in the living room, bowing respectfully: “Ms. Ni.” He handed her a folder. “Mr. Fu asked me to bring this. If you have any objections or requests—we can negotiate.”
Before he could finish, Dora took the folder, signed her name without even glancing at the terms. Tristan stared in shock—he’d always admired Dora Ni for her poise and sense, never once causing trouble for Keith. Even in divorce, she held her head high, refusing to beg or bargain—a quiet dignity that impressed him.
He held out his hand, frozen in place. Dora raised an eyebrow: “Could I have two more days? I’ll move out as soon as I find a place.”
Tristan recovered, taking the folder back: “Mr. Fu didn’t specify, but I think you should stay here for now.”
Dora shrugged—one more day meant one less worry for now. After Tristan left, she rushed to work, only to hit a traffic jam. Just as she cleared it, her tire blew out.
By the time she arranged for a tow truck and finally reached the office, she was three minutes late—her first lateness in three years, shattering her perfect attendance record. Bad luck clung to her like a shadow: one mishap after another, draining her wallet before the day even began.
She’d just set down her bag when Jade Cheng hurried over, her voice urgent: “Dora! Dora! Manager Qu wants to see you—now.”
