Chapter 7: Gifts and Divorce Papers

618 Words
Dora bit her lip, looking down as she pulled her clothes back into place. An inexplicable sadness washed over her. ‘Really? It’s not the first time this has happened. Why am I being so sentimental all of a sudden?’ Three years. To him, this house was nothing more than a real hotel. She no longer had to force a smile, yet Dora didn’t feel the slightest bit relieved. She had no appetite. Remembering she hadn’t finished packing her clothes, she turned and headed back upstairs. Keith had already started the car when he remembered the gift and divorce papers—he’d left them in the vehicle. Rubbing his throbbing temples, he cut the engine, grabbed the folder and the small gift bag, and headed back inside. Upstairs, Dora had just finished hanging her clothes when her phone rang. It was her best friend Maggie Ding, ranting about a fight with her boyfriend. Dora rolled her eyes repeatedly as Maggie vented, waiting until the cursing died down before speaking. “Darling, too much alcohol harms your body. Once you’ve gotten it out of your system, stop making a scene, okay?” She’d barely started consoling Maggie when she heard the sound of a man snatching the phone on the other end—followed by a sudden disconnect. Dora stared at her silent phone, a wave of helplessness washing over her. When she turned, she froze—Keith stood in the doorway, his tall frame casting a shadow, his gaze cold and sharp. Caught off guard, her expression froze. Dora’s voice rose noticeably. “Keith? Why are you back again?!” Holding the gift in one hand and the folder in the other, Keith Fu stared at her for two seconds, a strange discomfort stirring in his chest. “Forgot to give you this.” He held out a small bag. In the next second, Dora rushed over, taking it eagerly. Opening it, she found a dazzling diamond necklace in a blue velvet box. Her face lit up with her usual bright smile. “It’s beautiful! I love it so much! You have the best taste, honey! Thank you!” Standing on her tiptoes, she pressed a light kiss to his lips, her bright eyes seemingly sparkling with joy. But in that moment, Keith Fu pressed his lips together doubtfully. ‘Does she really like it?’ Suddenly, the smile he’d grown used to—and even liked—over the past three years felt glaring. Even the rare, sweet “honey” sounded grating to his ears. Noticing he hadn’t spoken or moved for a long time, Dora realized the atmosphere was off. She looked up, confused. “Keith, don’t you have somewhere to be?” “Enjoying the perks and not playing nice? Are you rushing me?” As he spoke, Keith pulled her into his arms, bending down to nip at her neck. “Suddenly don’t feel like going out anymore.” Stumbling, she crashed into his chest with a soft gasp. Dora muttered to herself in confusion. ‘Who annoyed this devil again for no reason?’ Even a fool could tell he was in a foul mood. Looking up, she wrapped her arms around his waist, switching seamlessly to her bold, coquettish demeanor. “How dare I? If you don’t chase me away, I’ll be over the moon! I wish you’d stay forever—though I’m afraid your other girlfriends won’t be happy. What if one of them storms over, mad I’m keeping you? I’m no supermodel, but I do value my face. If you ever hand me divorce papers, I guess I’ll have to rely on my looks to find another wealthy man, right?”
