CHAPTER 17 Sheridan retired early, exhausted by the tension of the day, and she dropped off almost immediately but found herself restless, her sleep interrupted. She had become accustomed to sleeping with Michael, sharing his warmth. She felt strange in her teenage bed without him. She had never been so aware of the months she had lain here feeling her belly grow and move, as she nurtured the child she wasn't keeping. Now, I'm back here in this bed, pregnant and alone again, and it feels impossibly strange. I don't want Michael in the tiny guest room under the stairs. I want him with me. It's where he belongs. Before dawn, frustrated with her constant waking and drowsing, Sheridan gave up and descended the stairs in search of coffee. Staring blankly at the pot she'd used dozens of times,
