As the Maserati merged onto the highway, William glanced at Nora in the passenger seat.
"See? I told you I wouldn't make you carsick," William said with a grin. "In fact, I can make this ride exciting. Want to see what this baby can really do?"
Nora nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! Are we going to race? Sophia loves racing too! I wonder who's better, you or my cousin?"
William raised an eyebrow. So, the Ice Queen has a need for speed? Interesting. He chuckled to himself. Looks like I'll have to show my future wifey who the real King of the Road is.
He accelerated, weaving through traffic with surgical precision.
However, instead of watching the scenery blur by, Nora kept staring at him. Her gaze was intense, curious, and unblinking. William shifted in his seat. He was used to ogling beauties, not being the one ogled.
"What's on your mind?" William asked. "Why are you staring at me like that?"
Nora rested her chin on her hand, smiling like a little angel. "Nothing. I just think you're mysterious, William. You have so many scars... where did they come from? Do they still hurt?"
William gave a relaxed laugh. "Those? Ancient history. Besides, didn't I tell you? I'm a cold-blooded murderer."
"I don't believe you." Nora pouted playfully. "You're just teasing me."
William looked at her. She really was a delightful girl—bubbly, innocent, and completely trusting.
"HALT! STOP THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY!"
Suddenly, a female police officer appeared in the middle of the road ahead, waving her arms frantically.
SCREECH—!
William slammed on the brakes. The Maserati's tires locked, smoking as the car skidded to a halt just feet away from the officer. Cold sweat pricked William's forehead.
"Are you insane?!" William stuck his head out the window and roared. "If you have a death wish, go hug a tree! Don't splash your brains on my windshield!"
He was furious. If he had been a second slower, he would have actually become a killer today.
He glanced at Nora. Fortunately, her seatbelt had locked, saving her from hitting the dashboard. She looked a bit dazed but unharmed.
William turned back to yell at the cop again, but the words died in his throat. The female police officer walking toward them was stunning. She had sharp, striking features, radiating a fierce beauty that demanded attention.
"Get out! You're the carjacker! Trying to run, huh?"
Without a word of explanation, the female police officer drew her service pistol and aimed it straight at William’s head.
"Ah!" Nora screamed.
In a split second, Nora threw herself across the center console, shielding William with her own body. She glared at the officer through the windshield. "What are you doing?! Put that down!"
William froze. This girl... she’s trying to take a bullet for me?
He looked at Nora’s trembling back, a wave of warmth hitting his chest. Silly woman.
But then the officer's words registered. Carjacker?
"Hey!" William shouted from behind Nora. "Who are you calling a carjacker? You're hallucinating!"
"Get out of the car! Hands in the air!" The female police officer’s voice was steely. "I am a police officer with the Municipal Public Security Bureau! Do not resist, or I will shoot!"
"police?" William laughed. He opened the door and hopped out, completely ignoring her order to raise his hands. He leaned against the car door, looking relaxed. "Hey, Officer. This car belongs to my wife. Where’s your evidence?"
"I don't need to argue with you!" the officer snapped.
She had just received a dispatch: A red Maserati had been hijacked and was fleeing on the beltway. She had been patrolling nearby on her police motorcycle and spotted this red beast immediately. It was an open-and-shut case.
Or so she thought.
She approached cautiously, handcuffs in one hand, gun in the other. She couldn't understand how a carjacker had managed to pick up such a pretty girl in the middle of a heist.
"Officer! Stop! You're making a mistake!" Nora scrambled out of the car, standing between William and the gun. "He is not a thief! He is my cousin-in-law!"
"Cousin-in-law?" The female police officer glanced at Nora skeptically. "And who is your cousin?"
"My cousin-in-law is... Look, are you doing a census? Just know that you have the wrong person!" Nora frowned, her frustration growing.
William chuckled. "Officer, maybe you should open your eyes. Just because I'm driving a Maserati doesn't mean I stole it."
He paused, his eyes narrowing as he looked past the officer. A smirk touched his lips. "Hey. Look behind you. I think that might be the guy you're looking for."
He pointed down the highway.
A second red Maserati was speeding toward them—driving against traffic in the wrong lane. The driver was a wild-eyed man with a desperate, savage expression.
Seeing the police officer, the real thief panicked. He slammed on the gas, swerving violently to bypass their roadblock.
"Dammit! That's him!" The female police officer realized her mistake instantly.
She holstered her weapon and spun around, sprinting toward her motorcycle. But she quickly realized the futility. The thief was already speeding away; her bike wouldn't catch up in time on this terrain.
She stopped, turned back, and ran toward William’s car. "I need to commandeer your vehicle!"
William stepped in front of her, blocking the door. "Whoa there. You aren't taking this car to play bumper cars with a criminal. If you scratch it, you can't afford the paint job."
"Move! That is an order!" The officer was furious. The thief was getting away. "If he escapes, are you going to take responsibility?!"
"Nora, wait here. I'll be back in five minutes," William said calmly.
Then, without warning, he grabbed the female police officer by the waist and lifted her off the ground with one arm.
"HEY! Put me down! I'll shoot you!" she shrieked. She flailed, hammering her fists against his back. She was a trained fighter, her punches packed a punch, but hitting William felt like hitting a steel wall.
She had never been manhandled like this—carried like a naughty child! Her face burned with humiliation and rage.
Nora watched with her mouth open, stunned by William’s sudden move.
"Sit tight!" William dropped the officer onto the back of her own police motorcycle. Before she could react, he hopped onto the driver's seat in front of her and turned the key.
Nora watched them speed off and couldn't help but smile. He's going to catch the bad guy. My cousin-in-law is so cool.
On the bike, the female police officer instinctively grabbed William’s shirt to keep from falling. "You animal! You just picked me up! Who do you think you are?! And do you really think you can catch a Maserati on this?"
"Hold on tight," William shouted over the wind, his voice cold and focused. "If you fall off, don't blame me."
"How are you going to catch him?" she yelled back. Despite her anger, the cop in her took over. The thief was driving recklessly against traffic; if they didn't stop him, innocent people would die.
"Watch. There's a 180-degree hairpin turn up ahead. He has to slow down for the curve," William explained, pointing forward. "We're going to cut him off. By jumping."
He revved the engine.
"What?! Are you crazy?!" the officer screamed. "You're going to jump the guardrail?!"
She looked at where he was aiming. A concrete barrier. Beyond it, a ten-meter drop onto the lower section of the highway.
He's suicidal!
"Too late!" William yelled.
The motorcycle accelerated.
The officer's heart stopped. She couldn't curse; fear froze the words in her throat. Instinct took over, and she slammed her body against William’s back, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist.
The bike was small. With two people on it, they were packed together like sardines.
Pressed against him, she could feel the hard muscles of his back. Despite the terror, a strange sensation flickered in her mind—the scent of him, the heat of his body. It was intimate, far too intimate for strangers, but she didn't dare let go.
William felt her grip tighten. Not bad, he thought, a smirk playing on his lips. Nothing like a beautiful female police officer clinging to you for dear life to make a man feel like a hero.
The engine screamed.
"Hang on!"
The motorcycle hit the barrier ramp and launched into the air.
