The next morning.
William was still deep in sleep when a small figure burst into his room and started tugging at his sheets.
He cracked one eye open. It was Nora.
"Hey, what are you doing?" William mumbled, blinking sleepily and pulling the quilt up to cover himself.
Nora kept pulling. "Cousin told me to wake you up! You need to go to work!"
"Why aren't you at work?" William asked, yawning.
"I'm leaving right now. Taking the subway," Nora replied quickly. "Sophia already left. She told me to make sure you were up before I go."
William paused. "Wait? My wife already left for work?"
"Yes! It's already nine o'clock. Work starts in thirty minutes." Nora waved her phone in front of his face.
William looked at her seriously. "Are you sure you want me to get up right now?"
"Yes. You can't be late on your first day," Nora said with a sweet smile. "Breakfast is ready on the table. Sophia made it herself. So hurry up, or you'll fall back asleep."
William nodded. "Alright then."
Saying that, he threw the covers off and stood up. He was wearing nothing but a pair of boxers.
"AHHHH!!" Nora screamed, her face turning bright red. She spun around instantly, covering her eyes. "William! Why aren't you wearing any clothes?!"
"You told me to get up," William said innocently. "This is actually an improvement. I usually sleep naked. At least I'm wearing underwear today. Why are you so shy?"
Ignoring her embarrassment, William quickly threw on some clothes and patted Nora on the shoulder. "Let's go. You'll be late too."
Nora peeked through her fingers, saw that he was decent, and finally let out a breath of relief.
She blushed again, remembering how he had just stood up without a warning. He really has no shame.
As William headed for the door, Nora called out, "Wait! Sophia prepared some clothes for you. You can't go to the office wearing a tank top and beach shorts."
She took a deep breath to calm herself and handed him a garment bag that had been sitting at the foot of the bed.
William opened it. Inside was an expensive suit, easily worth over five thousand dollars. "Whose is this?"
"It belongs to Sophia's father. She prepared it specifically for you this morning."
Nora beamed happily. "You and Uncle are about the same size, so it should fit perfectly. Since Uncle rarely stays here, this is the only suit he left behind."
William understood. He sighed. Do I really have to wear a suit to work? What a hassle. I'm used to my tank top and flip-flops.
Whatever, he thought. I guess this outfit will help me pick up girls at the office.
William arrived at the company building at 9:25 AM.
When he reached the elevator bank, he found a massive crowd waiting. It was rush hour.
William hated crowds, but seeing so many beautiful female employees waiting in line, he decided to endure it.
Thanks to his superior positioning skills, he was one of the first to enter the elevator. He found a corner spot and waited for the inevitable squeeze.
People filed in one by one. Suddenly, William spotted a familiar face—Director Lan! The woman who had led him to Sophia’s office yesterday.
She was standing right in front of him.
Her eyesight must be terrible, William thought. She hasn't noticed me at all.
As more people crammed into the elevator, Director Lan was forced to step back. And back. And back. Finally, a young man squeezed in at the last second, forcing Director Lan to press right up against William.
William could feel her entire back pressed against his chest.
In situations like this, William’s self-control was tested. The crowd pushed them together, creating an intimate friction that made his blood run a little hot.
Director Lan felt uncomfortable. Something—or someone—was pressing against her back. She turned her head slightly and gasped.
"It's you!"
"Hi," William greeted her with an innocent smile.
Director Lan glared at him and whispered fiercely, "Watch it. Don't touch me!"
William chuckled softly. "You should watch yourself. You're the one squeezing me, remember?"
Director Lan gritted her teeth. She knew he was technically right—the elevator was packed—but his presence made her skin crawl.
She tried her best to create distance, shrinking into herself to avoid touching him.
But it was hopeless. The crowd shifted, forcing her back against him again. She gave up resisting, biting her lip in frustration.
This is torture... I need to get out, she thought desperately.
It felt like the longest elevator ride of her three-year career. And William was the cause of her misery.
Finally, the elevator reached the top floor.
Director Lan practically leaped out the moment the doors opened, taking a deep breath of fresh air. She shot a glare back at William. "Jerk!"
She turned to walk away, but her phone buzzed. A text from the CEO: Come to my office immediately when you arrive.
Defeated, Director Lan turned back. She pressed the button to hold the elevator doors open and walked back in.
Now, it was just the two of them in the empty elevator.
"Why did you come back in?" William asked, feigning shock. "Do you still have designs on me? Can't get enough?"
"Hmph!" Director Lan’s face darkened. "You're the jerk here! Is this funny to you?"
"Hey, don't accuse me," William shrugged. "I stood still the whole time. It's not my fault you kept backing into me. Besides, other than smelling your perfume, I didn't get any benefits."
Director Lan was shaking with rage. How can someone be this shameless?
"Fine! It was me! I was harassing you! Happy now?!" she snapped sarcastically.
William nodded gravely. "As long as you admit it. I'm a forgiving man, so no need to apologize."
"You...!" Director Lan felt like her lungs were going to explode. Her beautiful morning was officially ruined.
She turned her back to him, refusing to speak another word.
William smiled. Watching her angry silhouette was quite entertaining.
Ding.
The elevator arrived at the CEO's floor.
Director Lan stormed out first, muttering to herself, "I knew he was going to the CEO's office. What is his relationship with Sophia? God, he's annoying."
William followed behind her, admiring her confident stride and professional attire.
They entered the office together. William smiled brightly at Sophia and was about to call out "Wifey," but a sharp glare from Sophia stopped him dead in his tracks.
He remembered the rule: No "Wifey" at work.
He immediately straightened up and shouted respectfully, "Good morning, CEO Ning!"
Director Lan jumped, startled by his sudden volume. She frowned at him before composing herself and smiling at Sophia. "Good morning, CEO Ning."
Sophia nodded. She pointed a pen at William. "Director Lan, this man belongs to your Sales Department starting today. Please arrange a position for him."
Pfft!
Director Lan almost choked. This guy? In my department?
She stared at William in horror. But this was a direct order from the CEO. She had no choice.
After a stunned pause, she nodded stiffly. "Yes, CEO Ning. I... I will arrange it."
"Good. Teach him some sales techniques when you have time. Guide him properly," Sophia added. Seeing no other business, she dismissed her. "You may go."
"Yes, ma'am." Director Lan turned to leave, a new thought forming in her mind.
So, he's falling into my hands?
If he dares to act like a hooligan in my department, I'll make his life a living hell.
With Director Lan gone, only William and Sophia remained in the office.
William was genuinely impressed. Sophia was only twenty-eight, yet she commanded total obedience from someone as experienced as Director Lan.
And strangely, when Sophia spoke to her employees, she had a natural authority and charisma. She wasn't an ice block to everyone—just to him.
William let out a wry laugh.
Sophia scanned William from head to toe. She was secretly surprised. Wearing her father’s suit, he actually looked... handsome.
But she quickly put her mask back on. "William, when you are at work, you work."
"I don't know what you did before, and I don't care. But right now, you are my employee. Don't let me catch you slacking off."
"Go complete your onboarding paperwork. Then get to work."
William rubbed his nose. "Do I really look like a slacker to you?"
"Don't you?" Sophia retorted.
Even in a tailored suit, William still had that rogueish, lazy aura that he couldn't seem to shake. She couldn't associate the word "serious" with him.
To her, he was just an idle wanderer.
"Whether you're a slacker or not is none of my business," she said coldly. "Just don't embarrass me."
"Don't worry. Once I start working, I might just surprise you," William smirked. "Alright, CEO Ning. I'm off to work... don't miss me too much."
Sophia frowned.
William grinned and added, "By the way, great color coordination today. Pink and white really suit you..."
With that, he turned and walked out the door like he owned the place.
Sophia clenched her fist, looking down at her outfit. She took a sharp breath.
Her brow furrowed in anger. How did he know what color I was wearing underneath?
This guy is dangerous!
But... she had to admit, he did look dashing in her father's suit.
If he has such a handsome face, why did he make himself look like a beggar when we first met? What is his game?
