Chapter 013

The scene was bizarre. William, a young man in his twenties, was calmly praising and encouraging Adrian, a man in his fifties. And Adrian was nodding along eagerly, looking grateful for the compliment. William finished his cigarette and walked back to the negotiation table. Seeing him turn around, Adrian let out a massive sigh of relief. He didn't even have the courage to resist. In fact, resisting would have been the most foolish move of his life. The contract was signed while Director Lan was still in a daze. The money was transferred directly to the Group's finance department. Group Headquarters The entire building was buzzing with excitement. Director Lan had suddenly secured a massive deal, shocking everyone in the company. It wasn't until Sophia called her into the CEO's office that Director Lan truly snapped out of it. She had to accept reality. It was William. Not only had he saved her from being scammed, but he had also negotiated a price five times higher than the original offer! And the payment was immediate. In the office, Sophia looked at Director Lan seriously. Although she was happy about the deal, she was also worried. "Director Lan," Sophia asked solemnly, "why is this contract different from the one I reviewed? There's no German third party, and the price has quintupled. What happened?" "Actually..." Director Lan started to explain, but then she remembered William's warning: Don't tell anyone it was me. Especially not Sophia. She had promised him. She couldn't break her word, but she didn't want to lie to Sophia either. "CEO Sophia, please don't ask about the details right now. Let's just say... it was a stroke of extraordinary luck. I assure you, there are no problems with the contract." Seeing that Director Lan had a secret she couldn't share, Sophia respected her privacy. She trusted Lan implicitly. "Alright," Sophia smiled. "Director Lan, you've done a great service to the Group! This is incredible work. You really are reliable." Director Lan froze, her face burning with shame. Reliable? She knew she had almost destroyed the Group's future. If not for William... "Director Lan, are you okay? You look unwell," Sophia asked, noticing her strange expression. "Ah! No, I'm fine. Just... a little too excited," Director Lan stammered. "If there's nothing else, I'll go back to work?" "Wait. One more thing," Sophia couldn't help but ask. "Did William cause any trouble? Did he drag you down?" "Huh? Oh, no. Not at all. He... he was very well-behaved and focused on learning. He's a very promising employee." Director Lan felt her heart pounding. Lying to Sophia made her nervous. "William... yes, he's really quite good." "That's good to hear," Sophia smiled. "Go ahead, Director Lan. We'll have to throw a celebration party for you soon." Director Lan wanted to refuse, but she knew saying more might reveal the truth. She nodded and left the office. Once she was gone, Sophia frowned. Others might not have noticed, but she saw clearly that something was wrong with Director Lan today. She kept avoiding eye contact, which was unlike her. This deal isn't as simple as it seems. Thinking this, Sophia picked up her phone and called William, summoning him to her office. The Elevator William was just about to tell Bertha a dirty joke when he received Sophia’s call. He happily headed for the CEO's office. My wife asking me to her office during work hours? How naughty, he thought with a grin. Alone in the office... well, since she's my wife, it's perfectly fine. He stepped into the elevator. Just as the doors were closing, a hand jammed into the gap, forcing them open again. It was Owen. William smirked. "Oh! Hello, linguistic genius." "William!" Owen stormed into the elevator, ignoring the floor buttons. He stared at William intensely. "Who are you really?" "I'm a country bumpkin," William replied, casually lighting a cigarette. "Want one? It's a cheap pack, ten bucks. You probably despise it... never mind, I'll smoke it myself." Owen’s face darkened. I didn't even answer yet! He slammed his fist against the elevator wall next to William's head. THUD! The sound was loud, but William didn't flinch. He maintained his lazy, mocking expression. "I asked you a question!" Owen growled. "Why were those Iranians so submissive to you?" "You want to know why? Fine, I'll tell you," William smiled casually. "Actually, those three Iranians and I are from the same village. Back in the day, I stole an excavator from their farm... Ah, here's my floor. I'll tell you more about my farming days with the Iranians later." William sidestepped Owen and walked out of the elevator. "Stop!" Owen knew William wouldn't tell the truth, but being played, ignored, and mocked with the very insult he had used against William—"bumpkin"—was agonizing. He reached out to grab William's shoulder, trying to stop him. But it was as if William had eyes in the back of his head. The moment Owen's hand moved, William took a swift step to the side, dodging effortlessly. Owen prepared to strike again, but he froze when William turned his head. A cold, piercing gaze met his. Murderous intent! Owen felt a chill run down his spine. William’s eyes were like the blood-red pupils of a wolf king in the moonlight. It made Owen tremble involuntarily. Just as Owen was paralyzed with fear, expecting a threat, William suddenly grinned, his expression shifting back to playful innocence. "I'm going to hit on girls now... er, I mean, hit on CEO Sophia. Let's chat later." With that, William pressed the button, and the elevator doors closed, sending Owen down to the lobby. William adjusted his collar, whistling a happy tune as he skipped toward the CEO's office. As for Owen? William didn't even consider him worth a second thought. After all, our dear William only had eyes for beautiful women! CEO's Office "What happened today?" Sophia frowned as soon as she saw William strolling in with his usual slack attitude. William ignored her annoyance. Instead, his eyes were fixed on her attire. "Wifey, you really care about my feelings. Wearing white today... I'm touched," William said, looking as if he was about to cry tears of joy. "What are you talking about? William, be serious!" Sophia bit her lip, glaring at him. "Stop looking!" The "white," of course, referred to her undergarments... "Don't worry, I'm not looking around. Just looking right here," William chuckled. "Wifey, that outfit really suits your temperament. You look like an angel. Truly beautiful!" "You..." Sophia was at a loss for words. The first half of his sentence made her want to slap him, but the second half... he called her an angel. Every girl likes compliments, and Sophia was no exception. However, her moment of distraction lasted only a second. She took a deep breath and glared at him. "I am not your wifey! William, watch your mouth. I asked you, what happened with Director Lan and the contract today?" "Oh, that? Director Lan simply achieved a record-breaking deal. What's there to say? Wifey, let's talk about our wedding instead. What kind of dowry are you bringing?" Bam! Sophia slammed her hand on the desk, her face flushed with anger. She stood up, ignoring the sting in her palm. "Bastard! Can you speak properly for once?!" "Uh, yes." William blinked, surprised by her outburst. The little lioness is roaring. Sophia was a typical Leo; when she got angry, ten bulls couldn't hold her back. Better quit while I'm ahead. William decided to save the teasing for later. His attitude did a complete 180. His expression became incredibly serious and focused, as if work was the only thing on his mind. "Alright, I'll tell you the truth," William said gravely. "The detailed process of the negotiation with the Iranians today went like this..." He proceeded to tell her the story he and Director Lan had concocted. It was a complete fabrication, painting Director Lan as a god-tier sales master who single-handedly turned the tables. "Is that true?" Sophia was stunned by William's sudden seriousness. But even after recovering, she still felt the urge to be angry. She suspected that even if his face looked serious, his mind was definitely not. He was probably thinking dirty thoughts because his eyes were scanning her again... William nodded. "Absolutely true! Didn't you ask Director Lan for the details?" "Hmph! I will ask her!" Sophia said coldly. "Fine. You can go back to work." "Wait, Wifey!" William called out. "Let's have dinner tonight? A date?" "I don't want to eat with you! I already have plans with Nora. You can eat wherever you want!" Sophia snapped. "Alright then," William grinned mischievously. "I'll go home and ask Daisy to cook for me. While I'm there, I can tell Daisy stories about how we used to bathe together in the river when we were kids..." "Fine! Fine! We'll eat together!" Sophia gasped, nearly choking on her anger. "Bastard! Don't you dare spout nonsense, or I will make you regret it!" She said it, but she honestly didn't know how to make him regret anything. It was an empty threat. William sighed dramatically. "Well, if you insist, I'll reluctantly accept your invitation." "Argh! You are such a scoundrel!" Sophia gritted her teeth. "Fine! Since we're eating together, you're paying! Otherwise, don't even think about it." "Uh." William thought for a moment. He remembered seeing a popular porridge and pickle shop by the roadside. Cheap and filling. He could afford that. He nodded generously, patting his chest. "No problem! I have plenty of money. Treating you is a piece of cake!"
