Chapter 2: The Silver Trap

1293 Words
The world slowed to a sickening, agonizing crawl. A dozen silver-tipped bolts hissed through the air, their glowing runes humming with a lethal frequency meant to paralyze a hybrid and instantly vaporize a mortal child. Valerius reacted with the terrifying, supernatural speed of his vampire lineage. In a blur of motion, he spun, using his own broad, armored shoulders to shield Amara and Lily from the incoming volley. Thwack! Thwack!] Two bolts struck his back, tearing through his expensive obsidian suit fabric. Valerius didn't even flinch, though a dark, burning smoke began to rise from the wounds where the silver met his skin. His Lycan healing factor immediately fought the poison, his fangs elongating as a feral, low growl vibrated from his chest. "Get inside! Now!" Valerius roared, his amber eyes completely bleeding into an ink-like, predatory black. His royal shadow-aura exploded outward, twisting into massive, corporeal tendrils that swatted the remaining bolts out of the air and slammed into the first wave of cloaked hunters dropping from the structures above. Amara didn't need to be told twice. Holding Lily tightly against her collarbone, she sprinted toward the heavy glass doors of the Wolfe Empire tower. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. This was exactly the chaos she had spent three years running from. The supernatural underworld was a meat grinder, and her daughter was the ultimate prize. As she breached the lobby, she glanced down at the toddler in her arms. Lily’s little fingers were clenched tightly into the fabric of Amara’s coat. The little girl was still playing her part—sucking her thumb and letting out a frightened, innocent whimper to deceive any watching eyes—but Amara could feel the absolute volcano of raw power vibrating beneath her daughter’s skin. The air around Lily was turning dangerously hot, smelling faintly of ozone and crushed lavender. Don't unleash it here, baby, Amara prayed desperately, her mind racing. If the clan elders or Valerius see the full scale of your sovereign magic, they will never let you go. Outside, the plaza had degenerated into a bloodbath. Valerius moved like a shadow incarnate. He caught a hunter by the throat, snapping the man's neck with a single, effortless twist before throwing the body into two others. But these weren't ordinary human hunters. They were elite mercenaries, armed with specialized suppression nets woven from silver glass. Three hunters coordinated their strike, launching a massive, glowing net directly over Valerius. The moment the silver glass touched his skin, a blinding flash of white light erupted. Valerius let out a hoarse, agonizing roar as the suppression net sap his immense hybrid strength, forcing the mighty King down to one knee. "Secure the hybrid!" the lead hunter shouted, pulling a heavy, runic broadsword from his back. "And find the child! The elders want the bloodline intact, but the mother is expendable!" Amara froze just inside the lobby glass. Through the transparent pane, she saw the lead hunter advancing on Valerius, the runic sword raised to strike the paralyzed King. If Valerius fell here, she and Lily would have no sanctuary left in this city. The hunters would hunt them down within minutes. She had to act. She had to use her magic, even if it risked exposing the features she had spent years concealing from him. Dropping Lily safely behind a marble pillar, Amara turned toward the glass doors. She closed her eyes, reaching deep into the hidden core of her soul, fracturing the heavy, dormant seals on her heritage. “Annex the bloodline, ignite the sky,” she whispered under her breath, invoking the ancient, suppressed incantations of the Sovereign Witches’ Clan. Her veins instantly lit up with a brilliant, blinding violet fire. The human glamour hiding her true, striking ethereal features dissolved in a heartbeat. Her long hair drifted upward as if suspended in water, and her eyes flared into absolute, glowing amethyst. With a fierce, outward thrust of her palms, Amara unleashed a wave of raw telekinetic force. The massive, reinforced glass doors of the tower didn't just shatter—they exploded outward in a localized, directional storm of thousands of lethal, hyper-accelerated shards. The glass storm swept across the plaza, shredding the suppression net holding Valerius and physically throwing the advancing hunters backward into the concrete pillars. Valerius gasping for air as the pressure released, his dark eyes instantly tracking the source of the immense magical surge. Through the dust and settling glass, he saw her. She wasn't the plain, ordinary human woman from his memories. She was a breathtaking, terrifyingly powerful witch, radiating a sovereign authority that rivaled his own. The realization slammed into him like a physical blow—she had lied to him from the very beginning. Before he could speak, the lead hunter, bleeding but heavily reinforced by runic armor, rose from the debris. He realized he was outmatched. With a cursed sneer, he pulled a dark, ancient artifact from his vest—a obsidian sphere etched with crimson runes. "If we can't take the child, no one leaves this plaza alive!" the hunter screamed, slamming the sphere into the ground. A violent, localized earthquake shattered the plaza. The ground split open, revealing a yawning, pitch-black chasm lined with jagged, glowing red spikes—a localized death trap engineered to swallow everything within a fifty-yard radius. The fissure raced forward, tearing through the concrete, heading straight for the marble pillar where Lily was hiding. "Lily!" Amara shrieked, her magical energy flaring as she tried to sprint toward her daughter, but the collapsing ground cut off her path, leaving her stranded on a falling slab of concrete. The chasm opened directly beneath the toddler. Valerius lunged forward, his hybrid speed pushed to its absolute breaking point, his hand stretching out to catch the small girl as the ground collapsed. But as Lily began to slide into the pitch-black abyss, the innocent, bumbling toddler act completely vanished for a fraction of a second. Her tiny eyes flashed a brilliant, dominant violet that perfectly mirrored Amara’s. She didn't cry. Instead, she secretively pointed two fingers downward into the dark chasm. Deep within the abyss, a massive, echoing howl shook the foundations of the city. A localized wave of solid, ink-black shadows erupted from the pit, defying gravity, forming a solid, protective bridge beneath Lily's feet and violently freezing the expanding death trap in mid-air. It was an impossible manifestation of the Royal Shadow-Aura, controlled with absolute, terrifying precision by a three-year-old child. Valerius skidded to a halt on the edge of the fissure, his heart hammering against his ribs as he stared down at the toddler who was casually standing on a vortex of his own family's signature royal magic. Lily immediately looked up, realized Valerius was staring right at her, and instantly dropped back to the floor, letting out a loud, fake sob as she gripped her wooden sword. "Mommy! Scary hole!" she wailed, playing completely dumb again. But it was too late. Valerius had seen it. The core mechanics of her impossible heritage were laid bare. He scooped Lily up into his massive arms, his grip fiercely possessive as he leapt across the fracturing chasm, landing heavily right in front of Amara. He pinned Amara against the remaining solid wall, his dark, ink-black eyes boring into her glowing amethyst ones, his chest heaving with a dangerous mix of fury, betrayal, and absolute territorial dominance. "A human witch, Amara?" Valerius growled, his fangs brushing against the sensitive skin of her neck as his shadow-aura completely trapped her against him. "She just commanded my shadows. She has my blood, and she has your sovereign magic. Who the hell are you, and what have you brought to my gates?"
