Eyes in the Shadows

Chapter 10 – Eyes in the Shadows I had never felt anything like it. His kiss wasn’t sweet. It wasn’t gentle. It was fire. Consuming. Terrifying. Addictive. I let myself fall into it — just for a moment. Just long enough to remember that I was his. And that he was mine. No one could take that from us. Not prophecy. Not fear. Not the past. When we finally pulled apart, our foreheads rested together, breath tangled, hearts racing in the same broken rhythm. His voice was low. Hoarse. “I’ve missed you every second I pushed you away.” I didn’t answer. Because if I spoke, I’d cry. And I didn’t want tears anymore. I wanted truth. Real. Raw. Unforgiving. Kael’s hands still gripped my waist, but I stepped back gently, putting space between us. He let me. “You can’t keep doing this,” I whispered. “Pulling me in and pushing me away. I need more. I deserve more.” He nodded, slowly. “You’re right.” A pause. Then, “I’ll tell the pack.” I blinked. “What?” “I’ll tell them. That you’re my mate. My Luna.” My heart jumped so hard it hurt. “Are you sure?” He didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” I searched his eyes for fear. There was some. But beneath it — conviction. He was done hiding. So was I. But before either of us could speak again, a loud knock echoed through the hallway. Urgent. Repetitive. Heavy. Kael’s body snapped into Alpha mode. “Stay here,” he ordered. He left before I could protest. But I didn’t listen. I crept behind him, barefoot and quiet, stopping just before the hallway opened to the main floor. From around the corner, I could hear voices. “Alpha, we found something near the border,” a warrior said. “It was buried under one of the old stones.” Lucien’s voice was tense. “Show me.” There was a pause. Then the warrior handed him something. I couldn’t see it, but I felt the shift in the air the moment Kael touched it. “What the hell is this?” he growled. “A symbol,” the warrior said. “It was drawn in blood. Fresh blood.” Lucien cursed low under his breath. Then he asked, “Was anyone injured?” The warrior hesitated. “No. But… the scent. It wasn’t rogue.” Kael’s voice dropped. “Then whose was it?” Another pause. And then the words that made my blood run cold. “It smelled like Luna Arabelle.” My hand flew to my mouth. Lucien’s voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. “That’s impossible.” “Are you sure?” the warrior asked. “The scent was faint, but—” “You’re dismissed,” kael barked. Footsteps faded. Silence. I pressed myself against the wall, trying to breathe. What symbol? What blood? Why my scent? Lucien stepped around the corner before I could move. His eyes met mine instantly. He didn’t look surprised. “I told you to stay in the room,” he said softly. “I heard my name.” “You heard wrong.” “No, I didn’t.” I stepped forward. “What’s going on, kael?” He didn’t answer. I narrowed my eyes. “You said you’d stop hiding things.” He looked at me — truly looked at me. Like he was trying to figure out how to protect me from whatever just happened. “I don’t know what it means yet,” he admitted. “But someone is playing a dangerous game. Using your scent. Your presence. Maybe even your blood.” My skin chilled. “My blood?” “It’s possible.” “Why?” “Because if the prophecy is true…” he paused, voice low, “then your blood is powerful. A trigger.” “A trigger for what?” He didn’t answer. Because he didn’t know. Or maybe… he did. And that scared him more than anything. ⸻ By nightfall, the tension in the pack was heavy. Like something was coming, but no one could say what. I stayed in my room. I didn’t want to get in the way. But I couldn’t sit still either. I lit a candle, paced the floor, and stared out the window until my eyes burned. Then I heard something. Whispers. Not from the hallway. From… inside. I turned around. There was no one there. But I heard them. My name. Echoing. Distant. Aria…Aria… I backed up slowly, heart racing. Then I saw it. A mark — glowing faintly on the mirror’s surface. A moon. Cracked in half. Just like in my dreams. Just like in the prophecy.
