Chapter two; The Child He Hid

1017 Words
My entire body went cold after Adrian’s words settled inside my head. Vivian is pregnant with my child. For a second, I honestly thought I stopped breathing. I stared at him while my chest tightened painfully, hoping he would take the words back or tell me this was another misunderstanding, but Adrian simply stood there looking calm like he hadn’t just destroyed what remained of my heart. Beside him, Vivian lowered her eyes and gently touched her stomach. That small movement shattered me completely. I laughed softly because crying in front of them suddenly felt too humiliating. “You got another woman pregnant while we were still married?” “Elena,” Adrian started quietly, but I immediately shook my head. “No, don’t explain it.” My voice cracked slightly despite trying to stay calm. “I spent years thinking I wasn’t enough for you when the whole time you were building another family behind my back.” “It’s not like that.” I looked at him in disbelief. “Then what exactly is it like?” Silence filled the room again while Vivian stood awkwardly beside him, but even her discomfort irritated me. She was still standing next to my husband like she belonged there. Maybe she always did. Adrian rubbed his jaw and sighed tiredly. “Dragging this out won’t help anyone.” The calmness in his voice made something inside me snap completely. “You know what’s funny?” I laughed bitterly and wiped my tears quickly before they could fall again. “I actually came downstairs tonight planning to tell you something important.” For the first time, uncertainty flickered across his face but it disappeared too quickly. I swallowed painfully and looked away from him because if I kept staring any longer, I might completely lose control of myself. “You don’t have to worry anymore,” I whispered. “Congratulations on your new family.” Then I turned around and walked upstairs before either of them could stop me. The moment I entered the bedroom, I locked the door immediately and pressed my shaking hands against my mouth to stop myself from breaking down too loudly. Tears blurred my vision while memories from the past three years flooded my mind one after another. Every lonely dinner, every anniversary he forgot, every night i waited for him to come home only to fall asleep alone. I stayed through all of it because i loved him. Now i felt pathetic. My hand slowly moved toward my stomach as fresh tears rolled down my cheeks again. What was I supposed to do now? How could I raise a child alone after losing everything in one night? A knock suddenly sounded on the door. “Elena.” Adrian’s voice again. I closed my eyes tiredly and stayed silent. “Elena, open the door.” “What do you want now?” “We need to talk.” I laughed bitterly. “I think you’ve already said enough tonight.” Another short silence followed before he spoke again. “Please.” The single word caught me off guard because Adrian Knight never begged for anything. Still, I unlocked the door slowly before stepping back. The moment he walked inside, tension immediately filled the room. Adrian loosened his tie and looked around quietly before his eyes settled on me again. “You shouldn’t leave tonight.” I folded my arms tightly. “Why? So your pregnant girlfriend won’t feel uncomfortable?” His expression darkened slightly. “Stop calling her that.” I stared at him in disbelief. “You’re protecting her feelings already?” “That’s not what I’m doing.” “Then what are you doing, Adrian?” For a second, he looked frustrated like he also hated this situation, but I was too hurt to care anymore. “I know you’re angry.” “Angry?” I laughed softly. “You divorced me and told me another woman is carrying your child on the same night. Angry isn’t even enough.” Adrian stayed silent while tension thickened between us again. Then his phone suddenly rang. Vivian. The name flashing across the screen made my chest ache immediately. Adrian looked at the phone before silencing it quickly, but the damage was already done. “You should answer,” I said quietly. “It can wait.” “She’s pregnant.” His eyes lifted back toward mine. “Elena” “Go to her.” For the first time tonight, guilt became visible on his face, but somehow that only hurt more. Where exactly was this guilt earlier when he destroyed our marriage downstairs? I turned away from him before my emotions embarrassed me again. “Just leave.” Instead of moving, Adrian stepped closer slowly. “I never touched Vivian while we were married.” I frowned immediately and looked back at him. “What?” “She was already pregnant before she returned.” Confusion replaced some of my anger. “Then why would you tell me the baby is yours?” “Because it is.” Nothing about this conversation made sense anymore. Before i could question him further, loud banging suddenly echoed from downstairs. Both of us froze instantly The banging came again, harder this time, followed by shouting near the entrance. “Open the door!” Adrian’s expression changed immediately. The calm billionaire mask disappeared so fast it almost scared me. He walked toward the bedroom window and looked downstairs before muttering a curse under his breath. Fear slowly crept into my chest. “What’s happening?” Instead of answering, Adrian grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward him. “We need to leave now.” “What?” “Elena, listen carefully.” His voice turned dangerously serious. “Whatever happens downstairs, don’t let go of my hand.” My heartbeat quickened immediately. Then another loud crash echoed through the mansion followed by terrified screaming from one of the maids downstairs. And right before Adrian could pull me toward the bedroom exit, a gunshot suddenly rang through the house.
