Chapter 4: Echoes of Choices
The afternoon sun hung low, casting long shadows over the neighborhood as Kelvin sat at the edge of an unfinished building, staring blankly at the street below. His right arm, still bandaged, throbbed with pain from the bullet wound that had grazed him during the failed robbery. But the real ache came from inside — a swelling void of guilt, confusion, and fear.
He hadn’t spoken to Jerry since the night they ran. Jerry was now in custody, facing a barrage of charges. Kelvin had heard from others that his friend was refusing visitors, bitter and boiling with rage. Timi, on the other hand, had vanished from the street entirely. Rumors swirled — some said he had joined the church fully; others believed he had relocated. No one knew for sure.
Kelvin wiped a bead of sweat from his brow. He missed the days when their biggest worries were exams and curfews. How had it all gone so wrong?
Scene: Mama Kelvin’s Kitchen – Evening
The clatter of pots echoed through the small kitchen. Mama Kelvin hummed a slow gospel tune as she stirred a pot of soup. She turned as the door creaked open.
MAMA KELVIN
You’re back. I was beginning to think I’d have to send for you.
Kelvin stepped in, shoulders slumped.
KELVIN
I went to Uncle Sam’s. Just needed some air.
MAMA KELVIN (gentler)
Sit. Let me serve you.
As they ate in silence, Kelvin looked up, voice cracking.
KELVIN
Do you think... God really forgives everyone?
MAMA KELVIN
Even before you ask, He has started the process. But the question is — can you forgive yourself?
Kelvin stared into his plate, the words weighing heavily.
Scene: Community Center – Afternoon
Timi adjusted the microphone nervously. It was his first time leading the youth meeting. Pastor James gave him a reassuring nod from the front row.
TIMI
Sometimes the right path is the hardest to take. I ran with the wrong crowd for years. I thought I had time to turn back... until that night.
The room was silent.
TIMI (CONT'D)
But that same night, I heard a whisper. Not from the streets — but from God. And I chose to listen.
Applause broke out, modest but heartfelt. As Timi stepped down, Ejiro met him at the aisle.
EJIRO
I’m proud of you. Not many come back from the edge.
TIMI (smiling)
Not many get a second chance.
Scene: Prison Visiting Room – Day
Pastor James sat across from Jerry. His eyes were sunken, arms folded.
PASTOR JAMES
You’re angry.
JERRY
You think?
PASTOR JAMES
You lost your way. But it doesn’t have to end here.
JERRY (bitterly)
What life do I have left?
PASTOR JAMES
A redeemed one, if you choose it. I’ve seen men walk out of here freer than those outside.
Jerry turned away, but his hands trembled.
Scene: Uncle Sam’s Workshop – Evening
Kelvin swept sawdust off the floor, his mind racing. Uncle Sam watched him from the bench.
UNCLE SAM
Thinking too loud. What’s on your chest?
KELVIN
I want to make it right. Not just for me — for Jerry, for Mama. But I don’t know where to start.
UNCLE SAM
Start by showing up. Then keep showing up. Do good. Stay true. That’s how men rebuild.
Kelvin nodded. The journey would be long, but he had to walk it.
Scene: Pastor James’ Office – Night
Pastor James wrote in his journal when the door creaked open.
KELVIN
You said your door is always open...
Pastor James smiled and stood.
PASTOR JAMES
It still is. Come in, son.
Kelvin entered, closing the door softly behind him — the first real step toward redemption.
