Chapter four

Chapter four Emilia blinked. She was positive that the words that came out of his mouth could not be what befell her ears. “I’m sorry, what?” “A wife,” Julian said, turning pale, but there wasn’t a hint of emotion in his voice. “It’s purely a business proposition. ” Then she looked fixedly at him, speechless, struggling to comprehend the meaning of the words he had said to her. A wife? What in the world was the man talking about? She was an event planner…not necessarily a party planner as many people would perhaps imagine. .. whatever this was. “I understand that this may seem a little quite unorthodox,” Julian continued even in his tone, there was still calmness. “But I have a deal on the table that demands that I embrace this new image as someone stable and family-oriented; my board of directors wants it; I, therefore, need a woman for the purpose who will do it professionally and is single”. From Emilia’s perspective, the rug had been pulled from under her. This was insane. Completely, utterly insane. “What?.... Are you out of your mind, you want me to play the role of your wife?” “Yes,”he said, his voice firm without a hint of inflection. “For one year. In return, you will be paid equally or even more to counterbalance any problems you may have financially at the moment. ” She stayed for days and nights completely shaken up, her heart was racing crazily inside her head. This couldn’t be real. It couldn’t be happening. But the expression of sensual predatory intent in Julian’s eyes informed her that was not the case at all. “Oh no you don’t.” “I don’t... I don’t understand,” she stammered. “Why me?” Julian crossed his arms and leaned back in the chair, his brown eyes looking at Jack, slightly narrowed. “The reason you’ll do it, Miss Gray, is that you are intelligent, capable, and most importantly, you don’t have someone in your life who would interfere with your duties. ” The girl lowered her white glance, gasping for breath, as if she had been suffocating for a while. This was the most ridiculous, believe it or not, thing she had ever heard. Frankly, there was desire in the offer he made and Emilia could feel that some part of her was interested. ‘You don’t have to give me an answer now,’ Julian said, and his tone had changed, shifted to coaxing, almost gentle. “Think about it. I will have my assistant email the copy of the contract to you in the shortest time possible. With this, Emilia stood staring blankly as her legs threatened to buckle under her. “ I … I’ll need time to think about this.” “Of course,” Julian answered without turning his eyes to her, watching her go away. “But do not take so much of your time; you know that time is always running out.” As she walked out of his office, Emilia had lots of confusion and disbelief running through her mind. Julian Blackwood had just asked her to marry him, no, he hadn’t, he had suggested they get married! To act like his wife so that he could get something from business. Whatever he meant by that. And the worst part? Who was she to turn it down, she was not so sure she could say no to him. Her mind was a mess; only one thing rehearsed incessantly like a ghastly melody – a proposition that Julian Blackwood had made earlier. She zipped her coat up to her neck, and as she was walking through the middle of the road, she barely paid any attention to the crowd. Her phone vibrated in her pocket and to get her out of her twisted mind. SHe immediately pulled it out of her reach, grateful for the interruption because when she looked at it, all it said was ‘Amy’. Sighing, Emilia replied. “Hey. ” “Hi Amy,” I replied rather weakly. “Hey yourself,” she said, her voice filled with energy. “Well, what happened in the meeting? You did not call me after it. I was waiting eagerly to know how it went.” >What do I even tell her? This is what Emilia said, tossing her head to wipe the hair away from her face and look up, up at the sky scraping buildings. “It was,” she said, looking thoughtful and she found that she was careful when she answered, “Yes, it was quite…unexpected.” “Good or bad?” She asked again, her voice filled with curiosity about whether it would be good or bad news.
