Chapter 12

1559 Words
Yuuki slowly returns to consciousness. Her eyes flutter open, adjusting to the dim light of the room. For a moment, she is disoriented, but then memories of the past few days flood back. The pain, the anguish, the redemption - it all comes rushing in like a tidal wave. But something is different now. The excruciating agony is gone, replaced by a warmth that spreads through her body like liquid sunlight. She flexes her fingers experimentally, marveling at the strength she feels coursing through her veins. It's a power she has long forgotten, yet achingly familiar. She turns onto her back, her gaze fixed on the ceiling above. The room is silent, save for the sound of her steady breathing. In this quiet moment, she reaches inward, searching for the presence hadn’t felt for so long. "Raikō?" she calls out in her mind, her mental voice tinged with hope and trepidation. The response is immediate. Raikō stirs within her, a gentle nudge against her consciousness. It's not words, but a feeling - warmth, acceptance, forgiveness. The bond between them, that had once been shattered, now hums with renewed strength. A soft smile curves Yuuki's lips, a physical manifestation of the joy blooming in her heart. The reunion with her wolf, the other half of her soul, fills her with a contentment she had almost forgotten existed. With an inhuman agility, she lifts herself to her feet in one fluid motion. Her movements are graceful, powerful - a stark contrast to the broken figure she had been mere hours ago. She twists her body, stretching muscles that have lain dormant for far too long. Her joints pop and crackle, releasing tension and realigning themselves to accommodate her awakened power. As she cracks her neck, a sigh of pure contentment escapes her lips. This strength, this power thrumming through her body - she has missed it more than she realized. It feels like coming home after a long, arduous journey. With purposeful strides, she moves towards the door. Her steps are sure, her posture straight and proud. She is no longer the meek, submissive woman she had forced herself to be. With each step, she sheds the last vestiges of that false persona, embracing the true Yuuki that had been buried for so long. As she emerges from the room, her senses, heightened by her reawakened wolf, tell her exactly where she needs to go. The training room - where her master is sure to be. Her feet carry her swiftly through the familiar corridors of the house. The sliding door to the training room stands before her, a final barrier between her past and her future. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself, then steps inside. The room is as she remembers - austere yet beautiful, with polished wooden floors and walls adorned with ancient weapons and scrolls. In the center of the room stands her master, practicing with a wooden sword. His movements are fluid, precise, each strike cutting through the air with deadly grace. She watches for a moment, admiration and respect welling up within her. Without hesitation, she drops into a deep bow, her upper body parallel to the floor. The gesture is one of utmost respect and contrition. "Shishō," she begins, her voice steady despite the emotions roiling within her, "please forgive this disobedient disciple. Calm your anger. I know I've disappointed you, and I'll accept any punishment you see fit. But please... don't send me away. I couldn't bear that." For a long moment, the only sound in the room is Takeshi's measured breathing as he completes his practice. Then, with deliberate slowness, he hangs up the wooden sword. When he finally turns to look at her, Yuuki is surprised to find no anger in his eyes. Instead, there's a deep weariness etched into the lines of his face. "Why do you think I'm angry with you, Yuuki?" he asks, his voice soft but penetrating. Yuuki straightens from her bow but keeps her eyes lowered, unable to meet her master's gaze. "Because I turned my back on everything you taught me," she replies, her voice barely above a whisper. "I abandoned my responsibilities... I let you down." His response is not what she expects. "No," he says, shaking his head. "Yuuki, I was never angry that you abandoned some grand duty. I was disappointed because you abandoned yourself, gave yourself up to someone who didn't value you." His words send a jolt of surprise through Yuuki. She looks up, meeting his eyes for the first time. "But... my duty to save the world..." "Did I ever tell you that it was your duty to save the world?" he interrupts, his gaze intense. Yuuki opens her mouth to respond, then closes it. She thinks back, sifting through years of memories. To her shock, she realizes that no, he never had. During her history lessons, he had spoken of the Shewolf's duty to save the world, but never specifically of her duty. And even then, it had only been mentioned once. After that, whenever she had asked him what she should do when she was little, his response had always been the same: "Little Yuuki should just be happy." The realization sends her reeling. All this time, she had been operating under a misguided sense of obligation, a duty she had imposed upon herself. He continues, his voice gentle but firm. "The only duty you have, Yuuki, is to be happy. The world can go and screw itself. After all, you had nothing to do with the werewolf world's collapse. Why should you sacrifice your life and happiness for it?" "But my training..." Yuuki begins, grasping at the last threads of her old beliefs. "I trained you to be strong, Yuuki, to protect yourself. Your identity, your power – they make you a target. I wanted you to have the strength to shape your own destiny, not to be controlled by others or some misguided sense of obligation." His words strike deep, and she feels a wave of shame wash over her. All this time, she had misunderstood her master's intentions so completely. His expression softens as he sees the emotions playing across Yuuki's face. "We all cherish you, Yuuki. You're precious to us. That's why it pained me to see you throw yourself away for someone who didn't respect or truly want you." His words are gentle, but they cut deep. She feels tears welling up in her eyes as the full weight of her actions settles on her shoulders. "I would have been happy and given my blessings if the man you had chosen had loved you," he continues. "I want nothing but for you to be happy. But instead, you decided to give up your wolf, your family, and even yourself for a man that did not honor you." He takes a step closer, his voice dropping to a near-whisper. "You are worth so much more than that, Yuuki." As she looks up, she's startled to see the deep sorrow in her master's eyes. The stoic facade she had always associated with him crumbles, revealing the depth of his care and concern. His face grows stern once more, “Your wolf, Raikō, is an integral part of you, Yuuki. She's been with you longer than anyone, and she'll be with you long after we're gone. Remember, while you have others in your life, she only has you. Don't ever let her down again." Yuuki bows deeply once more, her voice thick with emotion as she responds, "Yes, master." In her heart, she makes a solemn vow - to herself and to Raikō - that she will never betray her wolf again. Though Raikō has forgiven her, Yuuki knows that the trust between them has been damaged. She silently promises to always put Raikō first, to nurture and protect their bond above all else. He regards her for a long moment, then nods. "Go and rest now, Yuuki. You've been through a lot." With a final bow, she turns and leaves the training room, her mind whirling with all that has transpired. As she steps into the hallway, she finds Hiroshi waiting for her, his face a mask of worry and concern. The moment Hiroshi sees her, a sigh of relief escapes his lips, and his face brightens considerably. He bows low, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Congratulations, Ojōsama," he says, his voice warm with affection. "Thank you, Hiroshi-san," she responds, a genuine smile lighting up her features. As Hiroshi straightens, he takes a moment to study her closely. His eyes widen slightly as he takes in the changes in her - the straightened posture, the confident set of her shoulders, the spark of life in her eyes that had been missing for so long. A grin spreads across his face as he nods approvingly. "Ojōsama... you're back," he says, his voice filled with joy and relief. Yuuki raises an eyebrow at his words, then lets out a laugh - a sound of pure, unbridled happiness that echoes through the hallway. It's a sound that hasn't been heard in this house for far too long. That's right, she thinks to herself, feeling Raikō's presence warm and strong within her. The real Yuuki Watanabe is back. And she's never going anywhere.
