Best Man

I knew that I had fallen further in his eyes. He might have hated my sister but it won't be anything compared to how he feels about me. It is not every day the groom gets jilted. It had happened to him once and the second time he was on that verge. It is not something that will be easily forgiven. People are far more curious as of what must have caused the elder sister to run away? If I had run like her too then his reputation would have been in tatters. I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. I have managed to save my family but landed myself in deep s**t.

He hadn't looked at me for a long time. He tries to ignore the fact that he has a bride next to him most of the time.

"Hey smile", said the photographer at me. He didn't say the same to Dane because he must look dashing even if scowls. I pasted a smile on my face. But it looked as though I was being forced to do it. The photographer didn't care though he clicked away the pictures just as happily as I was sad.

I missed my best friend Charlie who should have been my bride's maid. But she didn't come because Heidi chose to not invite my best friend. She hates all of my friends. Charlie too because she said my best friend was a lesbian because she couldn't land a man.

My friend was a great woman and gets asked out by men all time. But Heidi didn't get it or she does but she chose to ignore it. She was offended because Charlie didn't ask her out. Frankly Charlie doesn't care for a relationship. She wants to remain single and figure herself out. She had a serious relationship with one of the teachers. It didn't end well. The teacher broke up with her as soon as she turned eighteen. She was broken hearted for a long time.

I missed every one my best friend, family and even Heidi at this point. I didn't want to continue this farce marriage. It was a mistake.

"Stop behaving as though you are going to get executed rather than a happy bride", I heard a cold voice beside me.

I stared at that cold blue eyes. His blond hair resembled sunshine. They looked so soft to touch. I may never touch it. He will never be my first in the True sense.

"I'm trying", I told him my voice broke.

"It's not enough", he said.

"What more you want me to do?", I asked him mechanically.

"Hold my hands and smile at me as though I'm your sun", he said.

"I'm not an actress", I told him.

"But I'm paying you for that. So you better give me what money's worth", he seethed.

My hands shook while touching his hands. I looked at those cold blue eyes and gave a smile blinking away the tears forming in my eyes.

"Come on that was easy wasn't it. Did you think you can get away that easily?", he asked.

"No. I know I will never be able to get away after what I did today", I told him.

"Don't be so melodramatic. You are no better than your sister if not worse", he said.

"Then why did you marry me?", I asked bravely.

"Because I wanted a wife. It is good for business", he said with a shrug.

"I thought you loved my sister", I told him with a frown.

"I'm not a fool to love her. Maybe in bed", he said casually.

I looked at him in disbelief. Had he just said that? Of course he has slept with my sister. They were engaged and very much in love according to her.

"Please excuse me", I croaked out and tried to go.

But his hand caught me and made stay where I was.

"Where do you think you are going?", he asked me.

"I'm not staying with you while you continue to insult me and my sister", I said with my head held high.

"Forgive me but isn't that the other way around? First your sister ran away and the second time you tried to do the same", he said.

"I panicked for a second. I'm sorry", I told him.

"I think both of you sisters planned this to wheedle more money out of me", he said.

I flinched when I heard his cruel words. He is so angry at me. I wonder what he will do to me when we were alone?

"Hey love birds are you guys fighting already the wedding only happened an hour ago", said a cheery voice.

I turned my head to find a handsome guy. His hair was net black and his smile was cute. I had a sense that besides his boyish look he was a big flirt. I also feared that he had overheard most of the conversation. Though we spoke in low voices he was right beside unlike the rest of the people.

"Great to see my best man who was absent in the whole wedding", he said.

"Hey don't hold it against me I thought the wedding is not going to happen what with the bride's escape and all. But I would like to thank the lovely lady who helped my friend to avoid the greatest embarrassment of his life. I was too busy trying to avoid Heidi because she was going to set me up with one of my ex who was going to be her bride's maid. I'm glad she is not here right now. By the way I'm Jake Sayers ", said him holding out his hand.

" She had chicken pox. I was filling in for her. It is a pleasure to meet you I'm Ziva", I told him.

"I guess you filled in for the bride as well. From bride's maid to the bride herself fantastic. I'm sure my friend will have no complaints since he got something even better with the exchange " he said with a dimpled smile.

" Jake stop flirting with my wife and where were you all this time?",asked Dane clearly annoyed at Jake for praising me.

" See he is already jealous. I was with your mother in law's friend. She said she wants to show me fire works", he said..

"But the fire works is not until after the wedding", I said to him.

"A beauty yet so innocent you are a lucky son of a b***h", he said with a laugh.

"f**k off", said Dane not angry.

I looked at him confused for a second. Then it striked me. It made me blush so deep.

"She blushes too. She is way too good for you. Take care of her", he said to Dane.

"Don't sleep with the guests go get drunk or something", said Dane.

"Alright sir", said Dane with a mock salute and it made me laugh. It was a genuine laugh the first one since this wedding debacle.

"Don't try to pursue him he is a smooth talker. He rarely says the truth", said Dane irritated.

"I wasn't going to pursue him", I said annoyed.

"But you looked like it", said Dane. I felt anger rising over me.
