ONITSHA
The morning was blessed with the rays of the dazzling sun, glimmering with a radiant smile on the Earth. Birds filled the atmosphere with their light weight and their clamouring chirps of sweet music. The wind rose and fell as it swiftly ran it's presence on the combined matter of the Earth. The tress breathed happily, knowing that their breath was a salvation to the human system.
The streets of Onitsha was always flooded with the activities of sapiens. From the center to the last boundary of the town. Being compared to the popular towns in her country, it was blessed with one of the biggest market in Africa. The main market.
Little Agnes pushed herself hard among the crowd that were on their activities in the market. Their defined number was more than hundred, all in right struggle of exchanging their goods and services. Agnes had no interest in trade, no, her major interest was sniffing off gossips made by her mother in discussions and always awaiting the little gifts her sister bought for her whenever she came over.
"Excuse me. EXCUSE!" She cried among the distracting adults. Some respected her call, others ignored her. In the end, she finally made it to the shop full of sweat.
Ifunanya kept the new Turkish silk dress back at it's position on the display rack. She had to do so after her customer declined the cloth to being a better Turkish material. She had declined after claiming that there was no better design than that of Italy, which the lady never had.
"It is not available for now. You can buy this one if you want. They are both unique."
"Madam, don't worry. If you don't have it then, I have no other choice than to leave." The customer smiled. "Don't worry, there are always places I can buy it eh. Bye."
"Thank you for nothing oo!" Ifunanya shouted at the empty space the customer had left behind.
"Why do people go for Italian products always. Everytime 'Italian', everytime 'Italian'. God forbid bad thing. Chai! Italian no go kill person for here oh."
"Mummy! mummy!" The little girl greeted as she sunk beneath her mother's arms. Her mother had given her such welcome as she always does, giving her three kisses and two pinches.
"Ouch!"
"That's my sugar! Oh, how I've missed you." Ifunanya teased after giving her daughter another pinch. "Give me another hug and stop complaining. Am I not your mother?"
Agnes smiled and gave her mother another warmth hug, a feeling of love that she would never forget in her entire life.
Then someone disturbed their peace together.
"Hello? Do you do POS transfer here? I would love to buy that Italian dress." She pointed at the exact same dress that Ifunanya had returned before.
Her mother left her to get the cloth while she got the POS machine and approached the lady.
The lady was dressed in blue blouse, leggings and heels. She also wore a face cap that protected her from the sun's heat. She was in her early thirties and had a great advantage in height. And for the record, she was extremely beautiful.
" Young girl, how are you and what's your name?"
"My name is Agnes ma and I am fine, thank you."
"How old are you?"
" I am ten years old ma." She changed her tone.
" Good to know," The woman understood, collecting the machine from her to input her pin. "So Agnes, what would you like to be in future, a banker?"
"No. I will love to be a lawyer do that I can bring justice to the oppressed and to those who need saving." She expressed her stand, happily collecting the machine back. "That is what mummy says they do and I love it."
The lady laughed in excitement putting both of her hands at her waist. She collected back the machine again after the mother came back with the cloth packaged with it's price. Its cost over thirty thousand Naira.
She confirmed the pay and the transaction went successfully. Then she turned to leave when Agnes stopped her.
Her mother was surprised.
" Aunty, I want to promise you that in future if you ever need my help.or you need somebody to bring justice for you, I will always be there."
The woman smiled. "I know young girl and I expect nothing less."
She walked away from them until she disappeared among the crowd and was nowhere to be seen again. Agnes smiled at the vacant figure of the woman hoping to see her again as a lawyer in future, although she had made a mistake of not asking her her name. what an i***t!
"Agnes?"
"Yes mummy."
"How many times have I warned you to never talk to strangers eh?"
"I'm sorry, but she asked me what I wanted to become..."
"And so?" She stretched a warning finger. "Don't ever try it again. Am I understood?"
" Yes mummy." She nodded in sadness.
"Good. Aya, time to go and meet your sister. Don't get lost oo."
" Yes mummy, I promise."
And off she fled like the wind in a direction that kept her heart in joy. A place she would always long for-a time she would always enjoy with her sibling.
