Helen's POV
Pacing to and fro and feeling uneasy. This man was asked to do a neat job. I quite hope he does it without any trace.
Immediately after I dropped the phone, it rang.
I picked it up.
“It's done, Ma; it looked like an accident.” The phone rang dead on the other side.
Finally, it all came easy. I actually warned him about it, though, but he never listened.
For the next few minutes, I felt a huge guilt swell in my chest. As I looked at our family photo, I wondered how this one big family could turn upside down. The Cassons Empire needs to be protected by all means.
My phone rang.
And I answered, but the immediate response I got broke me.
“Hello? Is this Mrs. Helen Casson? Your husband has just been rushed to our medical facility.”
“What!! How come? What happened? I thought he… I thought…” Hot tears ran down my cheeks as I just realized they were pouring out because I would miss him a lot too, and I was involved.
“You are expected to come to the hospital for further information.” I rushed my purse and phone as I ran downstairs to get the keys and the driver to the hospital.
I knew I had to call someone, my daughter, but I don't know where she could be right now. And I think partying or clubbing, because that's what she mostly does.
I delayed the idea and decided to call her once I got there.
On the way to the hospital, my heart was racing fast, the palms of my hands became sweaty, and goosebumps flooded my skin.
We alighted from the car as I rushed inside.
“Where is my husband?! My voice thundered across the wards. “Where is my husband? Nurse?” I shook her continuously as she directed that I calm down.
“Mrs. Casson,” I turned to see the doctor with a pale and fallen countenance.
“How is he? Where is he?” I could feel the beads of tears falling from my eyes.
“I am sorry to say this, but we lost him.” He immediately walked out.
“No, no, no, no, don't say that, please.” My chest tightened; I could feel the heat rising from within. I realized I had taken my husband's life. I was not supposed to feel this way but still there is this feeling, this feeling...
I have to call my daughter at this instant.
Her phone rings.
She didn't pick up. I tried again, and she picked.
In between sobs, “Your father is dead,” I could tell the phone was leaving her hands on the floor, and the shock accompanied it.
I texted her the address of the hospital. As I recalled, I still have unfinished business. I cleaned my eyes as I reached for my phone.
“I hope the scene is cleared?”
“All cleared; nothing can be traced to you, ma.”
I ended the call, and I could see my hands shaking at the guilt, but still I continued crying.
……
“Mum!! Mum!” I could see Aurelia shouting as she was looking shocked and pale. She was already crying, “Mum, tell me it's not true. Where is Dad?”
I pointed towards his ward. She rushed there, but looking through the glass, she broke.
“Aurelia, please come, my baby girl.” I ran to hold her as we both cried for each other. I looked at her, but I could see her eyes fallen and just sadness.
She loved her dad so much; we both didn't connect that much, but right now we have to be strong together.
“Mum, Dad's…dead.” She sneezed and cleaned her tears. While she looked at me, and we both went into a comforting hug.
“I’m sorry, my darling; we both have to be strong, OK?” I couldn't look into her eyes while rubbing her arms and fixing her hair. “He would have wanted us to stay strong.”
“So what about the police? Aren’t they saying anything about it? Any investigation ongoing?”
“They took their forensic scientists to the scene to check for what might be the cause of the accident.” In a low, husky voice I whispered, “I am so sorry.”
Moments later we had to go home.
I held her up while we went back home.
Looking at Aurelia throughout the journey, and as we entered the house, she felt a little empty. I could see it, and it broke me a little, but the affection given to her then was just too much.
I was his wife, but I felt left out every single time.
“Mum, it hurts; I couldn't even tell him bye.” Aurelia's voice brought me out of my thoughts.
“I’m sorry, my baby; it's OK to be hurt. He was your father and he loved you… I love you too.” These words tasted bitter in my mouth because the last part was not really true.
She hugged me tightly.
And for that moment I wished I was the biological mother of a child. Something stung me inside—the feeling of guilt.
“I will go to my room now.” She rubbed her eyes again and hurried upstairs.
I crashed on the sofa and watched her go upstairs. I have managed to win this step, but if anyone tries to be on my part in victory, she will cut them out again.
I sighed.
I had to call in the necessary engagements for the funeral.
Then I turned on the TV to see what was going on, but the stations were all carrying The Cassons news everywhere.
The reading will commence tomorrow. I have to be ready.
My phone beeps. I took it out to see a message from one of the assassins;
*Thank you, Madam. We have seen our pay and we have cleaned the environment. There is nothing suspicious*
My lips rounded up to a little smile, and a little bit of fear gradually subsided. I trust these boys, and I know they will deliver. I yawned and deleted the message.
And gradually fell asleep.
I woke up moments later, checked the time, and realized I had been off for a while. I guess it's because of the crying and the stress of today.
I approached the kitchen to get water from it, as I actually wondered where Aurelia might be.
I gulped a cool glass of water.
My phone rang and I picked up.
“Am I speaking to Mrs Casson, Am the detective in charge of this case? We have concluded the search and I don't see any substantial evidence. We will act with integrity and duly to find the main cause of the accident”.
"Okay then, I understand all you've said, but be rest assured that whatever happens, I know and trust you about this." I ended the call and hissed.
I had to go see Aurelia.
I climbed the stairs to her room, and as I approached her room I heard sounds.
I pinned my ears on her room door as I heard moans coming out of her room.
I couldn't imagine what was going on inside. I tried to hold myself from barging in, but I couldn't anymore.
I pushed open the door immediately.
And I gasped.
