Grace Howard's face turned red, not just from humiliation, but also from disappointment.
Even without feelings, there should be basic respect. Accusing her of being a thief without any evidence? You wouldn't even treat a stranger like that!
"I didn't take it," Grace said firmly, her voice steady.
Lily Wang stood by her side, annoyed. "Aren't you two being too reckless? How can you accuse a guest of being a thief without any proof?"
Mina Sue let out a cold laugh. "If Ms. Grace won't admit it, then don't blame me. Aunt Christine, search her!"
Just as Lily was about to intervene, Christine Smith swiftly moved to Grace's side and, within moments, pulled a sparkling diamond ring from her pocket!
Grace's eyes widened in shock. "Who put this on me? I didn't take it!"
Christine sneered, "Before you lie, you should do your homework. This house is full of cameras. If you feel wronged, go ahead and call the police. Let them see who set you up!"
Christine spoke with such confidence because she had tampered with the surveillance after planning this yesterday. There were now blind spots in Mina's dressing room, especially near the jewelry box. Everything happened unnoticed, relying on sheer audacity.
Wendy Li instinctively trusted Grace Howard, but Christine Smith's confident demeanor left her uncertain.
Grace took a deep breath and calmly said, "Then let's call the police. I won't admit to something I didn't do."
As the tension between them escalated, Mina Sue, worried that the surveillance might reveal too much, hesitated and said, "Since the ring has been found, let's just drop it. Ms. Grace probably just had a momentary lapse in judgment, it's no big deal."
Wendy frowned, "Maybe it accidentally fell in? Grace isn't that kind of person."
Grace felt a heavy weight in her heart. Although Wendy was defending her, she still felt insulted and saddened. The implication was that she had somehow "put" the ring in her pocket.
"I'll say it one last time, I didn't do it. If you don't believe me, feel free to call the police. Until the investigation results are out, please don't jump to conclusions."
Grace borrowed Wendy's phone and saved her number. "Ma'am, if you decide to call the police, you can reach me at this number. I'm ready to cooperate anytime."
With that, she left the dining room without looking back.
Back in her room, Grace packed her belongings and called Henry Allan as she walked.
PR Hugh had mentioned that if she couldn't handle it, she should call Henry Allan to pick her up.
How strange. Had he predicted this outcome? Probably overthinking it. He wasn't a fortune teller, after all.
Rich families sure had a lot going on. By the time Grace Howard reached the front gate, Henry Allan's car was already there.
Just then, Li Wan arrived in a golf cart, her face full of apology as she took Grace's hand.
"Grace, I believe in you. You would never do such a thing. Please come visit again, okay?"
Grace forced a bittersweet smile. "Thank you for your trust, ma'am. But I think the young lady doesn't like me, and your mother seems to have a bias against me. I think it's best if I don't come back."
With that, she politely said goodbye to Li Wan and got into the car, leaving.
Watching her determined yet lonely figure disappear, Li Wan felt a sudden, inexplicable pang in her heart, like being pricked by a needle.
Had she said something wrong at the restaurant?
Christine Smith appeared beside Li Wan at some point, her face full of disdain. "Ma'am, you're too trusting of strangers! The moment I saw her, I knew she was trouble. And look, she's a thief! You should delete her number immediately and never contact her again, or you'll be inviting a wolf into your home!"
Seeing Christine's gritted teeth and intense expression, Li Wan felt a strange sensation.
She didn't say anything out loud, but secretly ordered someone to check the surveillance footage from that time and found something suspicious.
Although there were a few blind spots that didn't capture everything, Grace Howard's arms were always at her sides, and she never touched the jewelry box.
Could it be...
Li Wan had a vague suspicion but quickly dismissed it.
No, it couldn't be.
Mina was just a bit spoiled; she wouldn't frame someone.
Her daughter, Li Wan thought, couldn't have such a malicious heart.
...
Grace Howard returned to the Howard residence, feeling dejected. She didn't see Ethan Hugh but was met by a short, wiry old lady in a black dress, glaring at her fiercely.
"Are you Miss Grace Howard?" the old lady asked.
Grace swallowed hard. "Yes, I am."
"Follow me."
The old lady turned and walked away, leaving Grace no choice but to follow her into a lavish and cozy bedroom.
"You'll be staying here from now on. Don't wander around or snoop in other places, understand?" the old lady huffed.
"Okay." Grace suddenly remembered something Ethan had told her, and a light bulb went off in her head. "Are you the housekeeper here?"
"Smart move. My last name is Yang, but you can call me Mrs. Taylor. It's getting late, so you should rest. The bathroom is inside, pajamas are in the wardrobe, and clothes for going out are in the closet on the left," Mrs. Taylor instructed before leaving.
Grace Howard was still reeling from the Sue family incident, and the mention of a closet made her shiver instinctively.
But curiosity got the better of her, and she bravely walked in.
Once inside, she was completely stunned!
Although the space wasn't as large as Mina Sue's, and there weren't as many clothes, this closet somehow felt more sophisticated!
The clever color schemes and arrangements, along with the progression of colors, textures, and materials, made the entire closet look like a complete work of art—elegant and refined.
Mina's closet, though filled with a variety of items, resembled a bustling department store during a sale, overwhelming and lacking this sense of beauty.
For some reason, Grace felt that PR Hugh must have chosen these clothes. He seemed like someone with great taste.
Dazed, Grace emerged from the closet, took a shower, and found a set of pajamas in the wardrobe. She carefully climbed into bed to rest.
The items in the room looked expensive, and Grace Howard felt a bit out of place.
However, the bed was soft, and the blankets smelled nice. It didn't take long for Grace to fall into a deep sleep, the kind where even thunder wouldn't wake her, leaving all her worries behind.
It was strange how she felt more comfortable sleeping here, with someone she had no blood relation to and only a complicated past, than at her own mother's place.
The emotions and relationships between people are truly complex and hard to define.
Grace slept soundly until morning, waking up because of hunger.
She stared blankly at her surroundings, taking a moment to remember where she was.
It was time to get up and have breakfast.
Grace sat up and stretched with a big yawn.
But halfway through her stretch, she froze—
Wait a minute, where was the suitcase she had left by the wardrobe last night?!
