Chapter 3

Amber POV “You said YES?” Violet’s voice echoed through her living room the next day. She was the only true friend I had. I had met her a month after my wedding, apparently her husband was Liam’s business associate, and friend. Violet and I had bonded over the designer dress I wore to her husband’s birthday dinner and we ended up talking about it the entire night. From that moment on, we’d been inseparable. “Amber, please tell me you’re joking.” She added. “I’m dead serious,” came my reply, and her brows furrowed, showing her disgust. “This is bad. Very bad,” she muttered. “That woman meant everything to Liam. If his family hadn’t sent her away because she was from a low background they would have gotten married. Bob told me Liam had gotten her a ring a month into their relationship.” “That was in the past,” “Feelings don’t die Amber.” She lowered her voice, as if she was about to conjure a spell. “What if she came back because she still wants him?” “That’s impossible,” I rushed out. “She’s just scared. She needs help.” “Some women use fear as a weapon,” Violet replied. “Ever seen Ex From Hell? Those women are demonic.” “Real life isn’t a TV show.” “You’d be surprised,” she said, topping off her champagne. “You need to get her out of that house.” I was quiet considering her words for a while. “How do I even do that?” I asked, desperation bleeding into my voice. “Make him understand you’re uncomfortable. Or throw a tantrum.” She shrugged. “Works every time on Bob.” I offered a weak smile, thinking about how different my marriage was from hers. I haven’t told Violet about how not being able to conceive was affecting my marriage. We never talked about the sad stuff and I liked it. With violet my problems were forgotten and I was transported into a different world where we were just two young rich women who enjoyed gossiping while sipping very expensive champagne. Just then, her children ran into the room. She lifted the baby while her five-year-old, Michael, rushed into my arms. This was another thing I enjoyed the most about hanging out with Violet. Her boys felt like mine, having them around made me experience a taste of motherhood. “Chocolate,” micheal tugged the bottom of my skirt, grabbing my attention. “No chocolate today,” I teased. He frowned. “Promise next time?” “I promise.” I stood on my feet, after checking my watch. It was high time I headed home. After bedding her goodbye, and planting a million kisses on Michael's cheeks, I headed to my car. As I drove back home, Violet’s words replayed in my mind. ‘Get her out before it’s too late.’ Maybe she was right. I stopped briefly at a luxury boutique when a set of lingerie in the window caught my eye. I rushed quickly into the store picking up the lingerie that had caught my eyes. “Limited edition,” the attendant smiled. “We have other colors if you’d prefer.” “No,” I said quickly. “This one is fine.” The lingerie was Deep red—Liam’s favorite color. Even though our intimacy was long dead, I still clung to the memory of when he wanted me and wearing lingerie at night always made me feel just as I did during our earlier years of marriage—wanted. When I reached home, I noticed Liam’s car in the driveway. He never returned this early. My heart pounded as I walked inside. The house was silent. Empty. “Liam?” No answer. “Agatha?” Nothing. I tried calling him and it went straight to voicemail. The maids also had no idea of when he had left the house. Panic crept under my skin as the hours passed and there was still no sign of Liam and Agatha. I must have fallen asleep on the couch, because the sound of a car jolted me awake. I rushed to the front door to find a police car sitting in my driveway. The officer stepped forward. “Mrs. Creed, I’m Officer Dimsely from Parkson District.” “Parkson? That’s on the other side of town…” “Yes, ma’am. That’s where the incident occurred.” He hesitated. “There’s been a serious problem involving your husband.” My heart dropped into my stomach. “What happened to him?” His face tightened. And the world went silent.
