Hours. I've been pacing this goddess-forsaken room for hours now. Ophelia has checked my mate eight times now by my command. It shouldn't be taking this long. If she isn't hurt why isn't she waking up? I sigh running my hand through my hair for the umpteenth time. Plopping down on the chair I dragged to beside my bed I focus once again on my mate.
She is perfect.
Her skin is tanned like she is from the South and constantly kissed by the sun. Her nose is slightly upturned, a scar cuts through her eyebrow thin like she was barely grazed by an alpha wolf claw. The sheer thought of the wolf drawing blood from her has Radolf roaring within me. I drag my eyes down her lashes that lay upon her cheeks to her plump pink lips. My mouth salivates at the thought of tasting her sweetness. Hoping that one day she will allow me that privilege. The tang of fear permeates the air in her scent once more. It has been on and off since we arrived back at the packhouse. I clench my jaw and grip the armrests of the chair attempting to ground myself and resist the urge to pace and do yet another check of the room or order Ophelia to look her over once more. Radolf however shamelessly stalks back and forth in my mind snarling and whining like some sort of rabid beast. A light knock on the door grabs my attention and a growl slips past my lips. Alpha wolves are territorial by nature however with my mate unconscious I have found it even harder to control that nature.
"Alpha I brought you something to eat." Danielle my lead female pack warrior peeks into the room holding a tray. Her eyes lock on me before drifting to my mate behind me on the bed. A look of shock slams into Danielle and she stumbles back as if she was just hit. The tray in her hands clashes with the ground as her hands cover her mouth.
"Alpha, your mate. She-
A whimper cuts her off and I whip around to see sweat beading on my mate's forehead. She thrashes slightly almost as if she is fighting an invisible force. I feel sweat trickle down my back as the temperature in the room spikes unnaturally. I go to grab my mate's hand only to pull my hand back as a searing pain shoots through it. Almost as if I had been burned.
"I don't understand. I could've sworn she was human." Danielle is now closer looking at my mate with curiosity. Her statement piqued my interest but I didn't have a chance to ask any questions because my mate let out a piercing scream. The packhouse shakes beneath our feet as it mutates into a ferocious roar. Footsteps sound down the hall before Alice, Ophelia, Ballard, and Conal come into the room. Ballard and Conal hang out in the doorway but on alert Ophelia is on the other side of my mate now daring to reach for her but stopping before she even makes contact.
"She's burning up." Alice ducks into the bathroom grabbing a cool damp washrag and quickly placing it on my mate's slick forehead.
"Where are the two others she was with? I think their names were Katherine and Maverick." A growl rips from my chest at the information of my mate being near another male all this time. However, another whimper from her and my rage is damped by the growing worry I feel. She whimpers thrashing around again and I am forced to watch on helplessly as there is nothing to do. I can't even provide my touch and comfort through the mate bond because she is hotter than a flame.
"Let me go!" Her pained voice has my heart nearly stopping. What is tormenting her within her dreams? Has someone hurt her in her life? I feel sick just thinking about someone causing my mate harm that scarred her so deeply she has night terrors about it.
"No!" She lurches from the bed colliding with the wall opposite of her and staring wide-eyed at the bed. Her guards fly up and her scent is sucked back into her as she surveys all of us in the room. Her eyes a vibrant glowing white iridescent like a pearl and haunting. Her beauty is enough to bring anyone to their knees and I can feel that weight from everyone in the room. She is otherworldly her presence alone should be graced only by the gods. A goddess walking among the beasts. She doesn't say anything as she surveys all of us. Unconscious she looked like a helpless female but conscious I now can see the toned muscles through her clothes that are coiled and ready if she pounces. The fierce look in her eyes tells me that she will fight all of us to make her escape and the confidence mixed with her aura is proving that we are no match for her.
"You're alright. My name is Ophelia and I am the pack healer. Do you know your name?" Ophelia emits pure energy stepping forward only slightly and grabbing my mate's attention. My mate sizes her up scanning her from head to toe before peeling her gaze from her almost as if she is writing her off as not being a threat. Her eyes instead dart from Conal, Ballard who blocks her exit. Radolf growls at the attention my mate is giving the other males when her eyes haven't done more than merely skated over me. Unimportant, that what I was to her and possibly irrelevant. Is it possible that she hasn't identified me as her mate yet?
"You are in Shadow Rock pack house." She flinches at that and her bright eyes quickly scan over us again before they zero in on me. Radolf preens at the attention loving the way her eyes scanning over us prickles our skin. They swirl into the deepest daunting purple and a fierce growl escapes her. I didn't expect what she did next. I thought she would stake a claim like any other wolf but instead, she ran for the window and jumped straight through it. By the time I get to it and look to the ground she is gone without a trace. My heart races and a need to find her grows pushing all rationality aside. The room grows thick with tension and the daunting darkness circles without her light to chase it away. Less than a day I've known her as my mate and yet I can feel the shift of the world under me. It now circles her. Everything leads back to her. I've never truly been happy without her. How did I ever live my life without her? Twenty-eight years of life seemed irrelevant now that I knew she wasn't in it with me by my side. I can't live another second without her. I need her more than the air I need to breathe and with that, I leap out of the window to chase down my reason for living.
