In the evening, Ana had been busy packing her clothes into a suitcase. She had also included some personal items she considered important. Once she had finished, Ana methodically checked her belongings to ensure she hadn’t left anything behind. Ana had booked an apartment with her savings, planning to live alone to gain more freedom in organizing her plans. She no longer wanted to stay with Charles. A few hours earlier, Ana had sent a message to Angel, asking her best friend to pick her up that night. In moments like these, Angel had been the only person she could rely on and trust. Slowly, Ana walked out of the house, feeling a surge of emotions that had been building up inside her. She had experienced a mix of tension and disappointment that she struggled to describe. As she had looked at the house that had witnessed so many good and bad memories, she had regretted marrying someone like Charles. She had felt she had wasted her time and energy on someone who didn’t deserve her kindness. Ana had steeled her resolve, knowing she had to follow through with her decision to leave that night or remain stuck with the people who had ruined her life. She had been determined not to waver. The decision she had made had to be executed properly. She hoped that teaching a lesson to those two shameless individuals would bring her the satisfaction she sought. Charles, her abusive husband, had been an undeniable source of suffering. Ana had realized she needed to cut off all ties with him to stop the pain. After the divorce, she planned to hire bodyguards to protect herself and to fend off Charles and his parents, who had frequently meddled in her personal affairs. Ana wanted a peaceful life, free from anyone’s interference. Not long after, a black car pulled up in front of the house. Angel had arrived, ready to help. She quickly exited the vehicle and assisted Ana with loading the suitcase into the car. They had moved quietly, trying not to wake Charles and ensuring no one was watching. They had wanted to avoid any commotion. Once everything had been set, Ana and Angel had left Charles still asleep. The man would likely be surprised the next morning when he discovered his wife was missing. Upon arriving at the new apartment, Ana felt a sense of calm and relief. Although it was simpler and less luxurious than her previous home, she had felt a newfound freedom. Ana had been confident she could live happily, as she had promised her father. Angel had patted Ana’s shoulder and gently asked, “What happened to you?” She had been careful not to offend her best friend, wanting to offer support without prying too much. Ana had turned her head and opened her eyes, feeling an overwhelming sadness. Her month-long marriage with Charles had initially seemed like a wonderful time in her life. She had recalled saying her vows at the altar and the tenderness of Charles’s kiss. A single tear had fallen, prompting Angel to look on with concern. “Ana, are you okay?” “Angel, my husband has been having an affair,” Ana had sobbed. “He and Camila are seeing each other behind my back. And now, Charles is planning to take my savings under the guise of investing.” Her distress had troubled Angel. Angel had embraced her best friend and gently said something unexpected. “I’m not surprised to hear this.” Ana had gasped in disbelief. What Angel had said had seemed impossible. Had Angel known about Charles and Camila’s affair all along? Why had she kept silent? For a moment, Ana had felt incredibly foolish, realizing that she alone had been oblivious to her husband's deceit. “I’m sorry for not telling you earlier,” Angel had said with regret. “But I’ve been in a difficult position. Charles is someone you love, and I didn’t want to ruin your happiness without concrete evidence.” Angel had felt a deep sense of guilt for not explaining the situation sooner but had been unsure of what to do. On one hand, Ana was her best friend; on the other, Charles was the person Ana loved. Ana had been crying, expressing her heartache through tears once again. Being betrayed was excruciating, especially when the betrayal came from someone so close. It felt like giving one’s heart only to be stabbed in the back. The next day, as Ana had anticipated, Charles had frantically searched for her. He had called her number repeatedly, but it had been inactive. Realizing that Ana had vanished without a trace, Charles had been unable to find her anywhere. Ana had changed her phone number, and only Angel had known her new contact details. She had wanted to keep her whereabouts private, so she had severed all communication, including with Charles and Camila, at least until she could manage the situation. When Camila had learned from Charles about Ana’s disappearance, she had gone looking for her. She had visited Ana’s room but had found nothing. Camila had considered asking Angel for information but had hesitated, knowing that Angel, as Ana’s best friend, would likely protect her. Three months had passed, and during that time, Ana had not attended any classes, having taken a leave of absence. None of her friends, aside from Angel, knew where she had gone. It had seemed as if Ana had disappeared from the face of the earth. This mystery had sparked curiosity and numerous questions among her classmates, who were eager to know what had happened to her. One week later, one morning, Charles received a divorce petition from the court. His temper had flared immediately. He had crumpled the letter and thrown it onto the table. Mrs. Helen, his mother, had come in, alarmed by Charles's outburst. “What’s wrong? What happened?” she had asked. Charles had pointed at the divorce petition and replied, “Ana filed for divorce with the court. I have no idea what she’s been planning all this time.” Mrs. Helen had been taken aback by the news. She had picked up the letter and read it carefully. It was true—Ana wanted a divorce. “Why did she suddenly file for divorce? What have you done, Charles?” she had demanded angrily. Charles had shaken his head in confusion. He had sat on the sofa, rubbing the space between his eyebrows. “I don’t know. I thought my relationship with Ana was fine.” Mrs. Helen had joined him on the sofa and advised her son, “Charles, you need to do everything you can to save your marriage with Ana. Show her in court how much you love and care for her. Don’t let this divorce go through, or I’ll be furious with you!”
