Chapter Two

--- ‎ ‎"Is that...Zane?" a voice said. ‎ ‎"Williams Zane in the flesh," another voice whispered. ‎ ‎"Does he mean he goes to our school now?" a student said. ‎ ‎"You know what that means if a celebrity musician like him comes to our school," another girl said. ‎ ‎I looked around as I saw students gathered around our class, trying to catch a glimpse of him. He stood in front of the teacher with great confidence as he bowed his head to greet the teacher. ‎ ‎"Good day, sir," he said with no expression on his face, which caused an uproar amongst the students, as other teachers from other classes came to tell off the students standing by the window to go to their class, but that didn't stop the loud murmur that was going on within the class. ‎ ‎"Quiet," Mr. Stanley finally said as he looked at Zane with a smile. ‎ ‎"You're welcome, Mr. Williams," he added. ‎ ‎"I'd rather you don't call me Williams, sir. I'm better off with Zane," Zane corrected almost instantly. ‎ ‎"My bad," the teacher apologized. ‎ ‎"Zane here will be joining us as we continue the school academic year," he said as the students chattered amongst one another. ‎ ‎"I hope you all treat him well," he added as the students shouted in affirmation. ‎ ‎He then directed Zane to an empty chair at the back of the class beside a boy who seemed starstruck by him. Lessons went on as usual and when a free period came, students gathered around him. ‎ ‎I was staring at the scene keenly from my seat when I felt a gentle touch on my back — it was Tiana. She held my hand and had a mischievous smile on her face. She often does this when she wants to talk about others, and even if I don't fantasize in the act of gossiping, a little piece of information wouldn't hurt. ‎ ‎"A musician now comes to our school? What do you think about Zane?" she asked while maintaining that mischievous smile. ‎ ‎I said nothing, not because I didn't want to talk — I just didn't know what to say. I didn't know who he was. ‎ ‎I looked back at Tiana's anticipated look. ‎ ‎"Nothing," I expressed with no expression on my face. ‎ ‎"Why nothing?" she asked keenly. ‎ ‎I looked at her. ‎ ‎"I don't know who he is," I whispered gently. ‎ ‎She had this expression on her face while she looked at me like someone who had just seen a ghost. ‎ ‎"Really? What year are you in, the stone age!" she expressed in shock as the bell for break went off. ‎ ‎"Zane is the youngest musician under Zara label," she chatted still while holding my hand as we walked to the cafeteria. ‎ ‎"Just like the elite students are under either Classical, Siren or Legendary based on their parents' status, his parents' wealth is enough to make him a Legend. But the interesting thing here is that he doesn't need his parents' financial status, as his own financial status is enough to make him a Legend," she added as we sat in the cafeteria with our food. ‎ ‎"You can see why girls like Celine are flocking around him — you don't get to see an ultra Legendary student every time," she signalled to the table where he sat as she got a giant bite of her food. ‎ ‎"What kind of person do you think he is?" she continued as she repeatedly tapped my hand with her elbow. ‎ ‎"How do you expect me to know?" I said while giving her a straight look. ‎ ‎It was starting to get annoying — maybe by the fact that she was already saying too much, or maybe because a little comparison which I did in my head showed me I was truly a nobody. I don't do comparisons normally, the reality often makes me feel less of myself, but I couldn't help but compare in my head, which I instantly regretted because this wasn't about my parents' failures any longer. ‎ ‎"How I wish so bad we weren't here on scholarship — we wouldn't be treated as peasants," Tiana said as if she had read my thoughts. ‎ ‎"If only wishes were horses, beggars like you would have been dead, because I would have personally wished for that," a voice said from behind. It was Abigail, Celine's friend — or better still, minion — while her friend Sarah, the other Celine minion, laughed. ‎ ‎"These peasants doing the most," Sarah said as people began to look at our table. ‎ ‎"And look at what these peasants are eating, like they could afford this on any normal day," Sarah added as both girls laughed again. ‎ ‎Tiana had a sad expression on her face. I hated where this was going but continued to observe. The girls acted like they were about to go, when Sarah came back and dumped the whole content of food Tiana was eating on her head. ‎ ‎"Exactly where it belongs. The audacity to speak about Zane," Sarah said as both girls laughed again and were about to go, but something in me snapped. ‎ ‎"Isn't it proper to apologize when you do someone wrong?" I found myself asking. ‎ ‎"What!" Sarah exclaimed. ‎ ‎I stood up from my seat. ‎ ‎"Weren't you trained to say sorry when you bullied someone?" I rephrased. This time, the whole cafeteria had gone quiet, as more people had gathered to watch what was going on, and Tiana was holding my hands, silently pleading for me to let go. ‎ ‎"I am a Siren," Sarah responded while giving me a death stare. ‎ ‎"You could be silly for all I care — apologize when you do something wrong," I said as she was about to slap me, but my reflexes didn't allow it. I held her hand tight as I twisted it while staring deeply into her soul as she winced in pain. Her friend was about to slap me too, but I also held her hand. People don't seem to learn easily. The two girls winced in pain as I twisted their hands, which caused a loud uproar and murmurs in the cafeteria. ‎ ‎"APOLOGIZE," I screamed as both girls immediately told Tiana sorry, which made me let them go immediately. ‎ ‎"You will regret this," Sarah said. ‎ ‎"I honestly don't care," I said as both girls stomped out of the cafeteria in pain while Tiana looked at me with awe. ‎ ‎After break, I was called to the principal's office. The girls had reported the situation and I was suspended immediately. I definitely didn't see that coming. ‎ ‎
