It was a balmy night on Long Island; summer was in the air. Rodriguez left the precinct and was driving the six miles to Oceanview. He was meeting the police commissioner for dinner. He turned onto Ocean Drive; and after a few miles, he noticed a car behind him. At this time of the year, Ocean Drive was not a well-traveled road. He suspected that he was being followed. His suspicions were confirmed when he sped up and the car kept pace. He sped up again and made a sharp left turn, but the car stayed with him. He saw the car picking up speed and was attempting to come alongside. He weaved toward the car and it backed off. The car was on his right again, and it was getting closer. He accelerated, attempting to keep a safe distance. Then a shot rang out and the back window shattered. Rodrigue
