I gulped at how his voice dropped as he stared at me. I was grateful that there was already water sitting on the table. I took the glass and quickly gulped down the cool liquid, letting it cool me down.
"Yeah," I said lamely.
I didn't know what to say to someone like him. I mean he was a f*****g king and an immortal. What could someone say without sounding lame and like an i***t. I mentally berated myself as we sat there in awkward silence.
"Calm yourself, little one," he said, smiling warmly at me. "I don't bite unless you want me to."
Sitting in his presence was doing a number on my body. I felt like I was burning for the inside out and images of the two of us tangled in the sheets were playing in my mind on a loop. I squirmed in my chair, trying to alleviate the throbbing between my legs. I was glad the waiter came by to ask if I wanted to order a drink. Before I could say anything, he spoke.
"Something sweet and strong for her and a refill for me," he said.
I wasn't used to someone ordering anything for me, especially food or drink wise. I didn't know how I felt about that.
"We have some sweet red and whites, a couple of cocktails, and house special."
"A sweet red will do."
"Excellent, sir. I'll be right back with your drinks and here are you menus to look over."
"Thank you."
As soon as the waiter left, I turned my attention to him. He was sitting there all calm, perusing the menu, oblivious of what he had done.
"I—" I started.
"Apologies for that," he said, setting his menu down. "I didn't mean to overstep and order for you."
"Well—"
"I know, I know. It was quite improper to do so, but I thought you might appreciate it."
My eye twitched in agitation. I didn't like how he wasn't letting me talk and seemed to be guessing what I was thinking. I bit my tongue and tried to quell my annoyance before I said anything. I looked down at the menu, looking everything over. I decided to I wanted get one of their chicken curries, but I didn't know which. One had ginger and garlic and the other had chilies in it.
Do I want spicy or traditional? I thought, debating over the two dishes.
I didn't realize the waiter had come back until he sat my glass in front of me. I smiled in thanks, leaning away so that he had room to place it down.
"Are you two ready to order?" he asked, taking out his notepad.
Once again before I could say anything, he spoke and started ordering for me. He ordered one of their lamb entrees, and then he ordered me the garlic and ginger curry. It was like he was reading my mind and I absolutely didn't like it. The waiter took our menus and walked away, leaving us sitting down. He looked nonplussed about what he did, like it was normal. I picked up my glass and took a fortifying sip, letting the sweetness coat my tongue.
"Shall we discuss our—" he started.
"Are you trying to be a controlling ass or is this naturally how you are?" I asked, interrupting him.
I heard coughing behind me, and I realized that the girls had managed to get seated as close as possible to our table to overhear our conversation. He blinked a few times before opening his mouth to speak.
"If you are doing this on person or this is your personality, you can forget anything after this. I don't take lightly people cutting me off while I'm trying to speak, nor do I appreciate anyone ordering for me like you just did. The only reason I haven't got up from this table is only because I'm hungry and my friends spent too much time getting me all doll up for me to go back home."
He was silent for a while before he threw his head back and roared with laughter. I was shocked by his reaction, looking around the restaurant and seeing folks looking and whispering in our direction.
"Apologies," he snickered, calming his laughter. "I didn't mean to make you upset. No, I really did want to see your natural reaction. I just wasn't expecting it so soon."
"Are you saying that you were testing me?"
I glared at him. He was a complete and utter asshole. A sexy one, but still an asshole. I pushed my chair back and moved to stand. There was no way I would stay another second in this fool's presence any longer, even if I had food coming.
"Please, allow me to explain," he said, grabbing my hand to stop me.
I looked at him for a moment and sighed, pulling my chair forward. He nodded his head as I stared at him, waiting for his explanation.
"I'm sure you are aware of my identity as King of Demons," he said.
"Yes, and?"
"I was testing you to see if you were the kind of person that would let anyone decide everything for you. I can't have a queen that would allow herself to become someone else's puppet to undermine my authority. Chaos would erupt throughout my entire kingdom as everyone chooses sides and fight amongst one another. I can't have that happen. I have seen too many times when a king or queen didn't have a strong mind to go against others."
"So, you thought if you acted like a control freak on our first date would help you see what kind of person I was. You know there is a thing called asking questions, right? Best way to see someone's personality."
"Yes, but there are some people who would lie straight to your face if it meant getting what they truly desire. Pushing someone's buttons straight from the start has always proven better results every time."
I couldn't argue with him over that. It makes sense that he would want to test me and feel me out. He has an entire kingdom to rule over. He decides everyone's life with just a single word from his mouth. If he brought someone back with him and people manipulated that person, who knows what could happen to his people.
"Fine, but I still don't appreciate the test," I sighed.
"I understand. Shall we start fresh? On better terms?"
"Let's see if you can do better."
He smiled, his lips parting to show off the pearly whites behind them. My heart did a quick flip at the sight, and I had to suppress a sigh of desire. He held out his hand and I took it, watching him bring it to his lips and kiss it.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, my mate. My name is Vairys, and I can't wait until we are bonded."
