CHAPTER 7: Banter

1110 Words
CASSIUS The rain drizzles, tapping the windows lightly as I stare at the quiet streets. For some odd reason, I have no interest in driving today, so I let Lucas, my driver, do it. He pulls up at the parking lot, where lots of varsity students are running inside for shelter, and gives me a light bow. “It's still raining.” He says calmly. “Perhaps you'd remain in the car for a few minutes?” “I'll be fine.” He sighs. “Your mother, she won't be happy if she finds out about—” “You're going to tell her, Lucas?” I ask, tilting my head to have a better view of his face. He's bald. Completely. And he doesn't bother to hide it. He's proud of it, infact. Lucas has been working for my parents for years before moving from the pack to work for Kai and I. He shakes his head and loosens his tie. I can't tell if it's due to the pressure of my gaze or due to how tight it is. “Who does your loyalty lie with, Lucas?” “You.” He replies. With no hesitation. This isn't just about me stepping out in the rain, it's about something else, and his sharp gaze clearly shows he understands. Without wasting more time, I push the door open and stroll toward the entrance. The rain hits my skin lightly. The wind blows, ruffling my hair as my clothes grow wet. Several cars line up like it's a show of latest obsessions, but I have no interest in them. Not when I have more than a collection in my garage. The hallway turns silent as soon as I walk in. I'm used to being stared at. Watched. Stalked, even. Tch. Some girls can't keep their claws to themselves. And I'm sincerely not complaining. The sound of the rain fades into the background as soft footsteps bounce off the walls. Raye stands before me. With her hair in a ponytail, her soft features are more evident. Her lips are glossy, grey eyes with dancing flames in them. My eyes trail lower, and I realize why she's here. To return my blazer. Dante's words, from last night, cross my mind. ‘If you loose, you'll have to f**k the new girl and make her want it in two weeks.’ Cassius Voss doesn't back down from a challenge. I could've won. I almost did. The Vultures, those nasty things, I loathe them with my whole life. I take each race seriously, especially when it involves them. But when she looked at me… Something about her eyes made me ease off the gas. And maybe it was just my c**k reacting before my brain. Raye shoves the blazer in my hands. “Thanks.” She attempts to walk away, but I grab her wrist. Having this girl, pressed against my bed with her begging for my c**k, should be easy. Two weeks? More than enough time to ruin her. “Thanks?” I mutter. “I prefer actions to words. A mere ‘thank you’ doesn't show how appreciative you are.” Her mouth forms an ‘oh’ as she yanks her wrist from my grasp. She attempts to walk forward again, then she halts. “In my place, everything is appreciated. Even a mere word.” I scoff. “A mere word? Where are you from? Goody shoes pack?” She glares at me. “The fact that those words do not move you doesn't mean they're useless.” “They are to me.” “No one asked for your opinion.” “My opinion matters everywhere, Princess.” “Don't call me princess.” She flips her ponytail in a dramatic way, pointing her fingers in my face. “God. I want to rip that smug smile off your face so bad. Your opinions matter everywhere? Have you been to a cemetery?” My back stiffens. She smirks. “Yeah, right. Your opinions don't matter to dead people.” My lips twitch. “Dead people don't count. You know that.” I have no idea why I'm arguing. I have a lecture. An important one. But I'm here bantering with a woman I bet to f**k. “Well, you said everywhere.” “You're unbelievable.” “At least I'm not an egotistical maniac.” A muscle in my jaw tics. “What did you just say?” Raye bites her lips, avoiding my gaze. “Nothing.” She whispers, then walks away like she can't stand it anymore. She's a f*****g menace. Egotistical maniac? Me? A slight click catches my attention. Someone's hiding his face behind a brown locker. He's in blue wash jeans. A green hoodie with a skull on it. The asshole is so tall, his messy hair gives him away. Dante. He peeps at me, palm pressed against his mouth like he's trying to hold in a laugh. We exchange glances for a few more seconds and he bursts. He steps out, slams the locker shut, and waves his hand in front of me. “Didn't you say something like ‘getting her in my bed should be easy’?” He asks between laughs, making me grit my teeth. “It's just day one.” I snap at him. Dante shakes his head, face all red. “You got Madylin, Gwen, Lena and Brielle in a few hours. Why's she different?” “f**k you, Dante.” I walk away, heading for my first class on the list. I'd rather do that than engage in a silly banter. Strangely, Raye's seated at the front seat of my first class. A perfect opportunity. I sit next to her. She moves away, causing gasps to erupt. I ball my fingers into fists. She's doing this on purpose. Getting on my nerves. Who does she think she is, huh? I tried to be nice last night. I lost an important game. I gave her my f*****g blazer in public. A peace offering. A f*****g peace offering from a whole me. After my first class, I bump into Kai at the cafeteria. He grins as he sits across from me. “How's the bet coming up?” I stab my meal, then look up to stare at him. “Tell me, Kai. Am I an egotistical maniac?” He frowns in deep thought and it makes me boil even more. “You're taking too long to answer.” Kai then shrugs. “You can be.” He replies, leaning against the fancy chair. “Sometimes. Most times. All the time.”
