Chapter Two Ella's mom called out, tears streaming down her face, as she rushed towards her helpless daughter. But Ella refused to wait. She swiftly got into the decorated wedding car, ripped off the flowers, and peeled off the personalized license plate with their names. As she drove away, Ella mind reeled with the weight of Shaun's betrayal. "Never again. I'll never fall for someone again. I ignored all the red flags, and look where it got me. Shaun is a monster. Men are scum." Tears streamed down her face as she pounded the steering wheel. Glancing in the rearview mirror, Ella laughed through her tears, still wearing her veil. "Wake me up from this nightmare," she whispered. Exhausted, Ella drove for hours until the sun dipped below the horizon. She pulled over, stepped out, and collapsed onto a nearby bench, letting the cool evening air calm her racing thoughts. As she sat, lost in her sorrow, a gentle touch on her shoulder made her jump. Fear gripped her heart. "Who's there?" Ella demanded, spinning around. A kind-faced stranger stood before her, concern etched on his features. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. Are you okay? You seem...lost." Ella's instincts wrestled with her vulnerability. Should she trust this stranger? She studied his face, searching for any sign of malice. "Hey, I'm Ray," he said softly, his eyes filled with concern. "You seem hurt. What's going on? It's late, and you shouldn't be here alone. And you're wearing a wedding gown; it seems like you ran out of your own wedding." Ella's patience wore thin. "Leave me alone," she said firmly, trying to hide her trembling voice. Ray's expression turned persuasive. "You can talk to me. I'm here to listen." He sat down beside her, his proximity making Ella uncomfortable. Ella stood up to leave, but Ray grasped her arm, his grip tightening. "Let go!" Ella struggled, but Ray's strength overpowered her. In a desperate bid to free herself, Ella's thoughts flashed to her recent heartbreak and the vulnerability that came with it. "Let go! Let go!" She cried out. Just as Ray's intentions seemed clear, Ella's resistance weakened, and darkness closed in. Hours passed since Ella's encounter with Ray. She drove home, the darkness outside mirroring her inner turmoil. Ella pulled into her driveway, exhausted and emotionally drained. Her family rushed out to greet her. Her mother wrapped her arms around Ella, tears streaming down her face. Ella's father stood beside them, his expression stern. "I told you, Ella. I told you Shaun was trouble. All those people I invited, and this is how it ends?" Ella's eyes widened, shocked by her father's words. "I worried about this from the start," he continued. "Shaun's family, their reputation... I knew this would happen." Ella felt a pang of hurt and frustration. Where was the sympathy? The support? Her mother intervened, guiding Ella into the house. "Let's get you settled, dear." Inside, Ella's sister Rachel approached her, concern etched on her face. "Sis, I'm so sorry. Do you want to talk?" Ella shook her head, tears welling up. "I just need to be alone." Rachel hugged her tightly. "I'll stay with you, keep you company." Ella pulled back, her voice barely above a whisper. "No, Rach, I need some time." Rachel nodded understandingly. "I'll be right next door if you need me." Ella nodded, grateful for her sister's support. In her room, Ella collapsed onto her bed, her thoughts reeling. She couldn't shake off the memories of Shaun's betrayal and Ray's assault. She went online, and her wedding was trending. People made various assumptions about why Shaun left. "Some say Ella was cheating.", "Others claim Shaun had cold feet." Few minutes later she left her laptop to shower, she wanted to wash away her sorrows. Under the warm shower, water cascaded down Ella's body, enveloping her from head to toe. The gentle droplets soothed her tense muscles, washing away the dirt, grime, and painful memories of the day. As the water streamed down her face, Ella closed her eyes, letting out a trembling whisper: "The ones who claim to love us are the ones who hurt us the most." Ella's mind reeled with the weight of Shaun's betrayal, anger and sadness warring within her. She hated him, yet memories of their laughter and whispers lingered, taunting her. As she stepped out of the bed room she laid wet on her bed she told herself she needed to be strong. Rachel on the otherhand laid on her bed, her own heart heavy with unspoken emotions. She had been in love with Alex for years, but with Ella's crises, Rachel felt guilty for even thinking about her own happiness. Rachel struggled to balance her own feelings with her desire to support Ella. She knew Ella needed her now more than ever. In the other part of the City, Shaun sat alone in a hotel room, far from the chaos he had left behind. He wondered if he had made the right decision by leaving Ella at the altar. Going online, he saw the barrage of criticism and shame directed at him. People called him heartless, cowardly, and worse. Shaun felt a pang of guilt and regret. But then he thought about his happiness, and his resolve strengthened. He recalled his conversation with Margo: Margo asked, "What do you really want for yourself, Shaun?" "You want to know what I really want?" Shaun replied. "I want to be happy, of course." "And what makes you happy?" Margo pressed, her eyes piercing his. "Ella makes me happy," Shaun said, his voice uncertain. Margo laughed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Does she really make you happy? Does she?" She touched his chest, her lips curling into a sly smile. Shaun removed her hand aggressively. "Yes, of course," Shaun insisted. Margo's laughter continued, cutting deep. "You don't know what you want or what makes you happy. Ella makes you happy, but you sleep with me and moan my name. Think about it: what kind of life will you give her? Will you love her right?" Her words echoed in Shaun's mind, fueling his doubts. Had he made a mistake by leaving Ella? Or was he saving himself from a life of pretense? Shaun's thoughts swirled, his heart heavy with uncertainty. The night passed in a blur of tears and anguish. Ella woke up the next day; it was already 12 p.m. She had slept for a very long time, and her family were beginning to get worried. She got up, and as she was about stepping into the bathroom, someone knocked. "Who is there?" Ella asked with a really cold and low voice, like she was tired of living. "It's Rachel," her sister replied. "Thank God you're finally awake; I've been knocking. Can I come in?" "You can," Ella replied. "Shaun is..." Rachel began, but Ella cut her off. "I don't want to talk about him. He's my past now. Moreover, it was my fault. I caught him cheating on me at the party, but I still went on with the wedding. I would have called it off myself," Ella said, tears streaming down her face. "Rachel, sis, take note of the red flags. Don't overlook them. Trust no one." Ella's thoughts flashed back to Shaun saying "no" at the altar and leaving her. She also recalled the traumatic event that followed, but couldn't bring herself to share it with Rachel... yet. "Rachel, I need to tell you something," Ella said, her eyes filled with tears. "You know when I drove off... I was r***d by a stranger." Her voice broke as she revealed the shocking truth. Rachel's eyes widened in shock, and she hugged Ella tightly. "Oh, Ella! We have to report this to the police or something." Ella shook her head, exhausted. "I don't have the energy to do that. Father would be so furious; he would blame me for everything." The two sisters hugged each other, tears streaming down their faces. Rachel felt a surge of determination; she needed to console and uplift Ella, not cry with her. "You know what? Let's go shopping!" Rachel exclaimed, forcing a cheerful tone. Ella shook her head, her eyes welling up again. "No, I can't. People will stare and talk. This situation needs to die down first." Rachel understood, but she knew Ella needed distraction and healing. Moving on wouldn't be easy for Ella; she had loved Shaun deeply. Handling the rejection was crippling. "I was an amazing girlfriend to him, Rachel," Ella sobbed. "I swear, I was. He begged me to forgive him that night... Why did he do this to me? What kind of person is he?" Ella's anguish poured out in a torrent of tears. "I pray he regrets what he did... I pray he suffers for hurting me like this." Rachel wrapped her arms around Ella, holding her close. "You deserve so much better, sis. We'll get through this together." Ella's tears continued, a reflection of her shattered heart Ella's cries subsided as she heard a knock on the door, she wiped her tears with the back of her hand. Rachel gave her a reassuring squeeze. "Come in, Mom," Ella called out, her voice trembling. Their mother entered, concern etched on her face. "Baby, your dad wants to talk to you." Ella exchanged a nervous glance with Rachel, wondering what her father wanted to say. "What does he want?" Ella asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Her mother hesitated. "He's worried about you, sweetie. He wants to discuss... everything." Ella's heart sank. She knew her father's tone; he would lecture and blame her for the failed wedding and Shaun's betrayal. "Okay," Ella said resignedly, steeling herself for the impending conversation. Rachel stood up. "I'll be right here, sis." Ella nodded, grateful for her sister's support. With a deep breath, Ella followed her mother downstairs, bracing herself for her father's words. Ella stood before her father, her eyes cast downward. "You've made a string of poor decisions, Ella," he began, his voice stern. "Refusing to do your Master's in Public Administration, for instance. That would have prepared you to take over the company." Ella nodded slightly, anticipating his next words. "And instead of joining the family business, you chose to pursue fashion. A field I warned you was unstable and unprofitable." Her father's gaze intensified. "You ignored my advice and went ahead, insisting on doing things your way. And now, this debacle with Shaun." His voice rose. "You ignored my warnings about him, too. I told you he wasn't worthy of our family's name." Ella's father paused, his expression disapproving. "Look where your stubbornness has gotten you. Left at the altar, humiliated, and ashamed." Ella's eyes welled up with tears, her heart heavy with pain. "Dad, I—" "But what's done is done," he interrupted. "The question is, what will you do now? Will you finally listen and join the company?" Ella hesitated, unsure of her response. Her father cut her off, not letting her speak or decide. "You will marry Henry and stop that fashion nonsense," he said. "But I don't know him," Ella protested. Her father laughed. "But you knew Shaun." As Ella drifted off to sleep, her phone buzzed with an anonymous text ''you think you're free but your nightmare has just begun.''
