Chapter Five: Education

I did as the doctor said while she ran a bunch of tests on me. “You seem healthy and I don’t see any signs that you wouldn’t be able to carry the King’s child. Of course, we’ll know for sure when the tests come back.” Nolan set up this appointment the night he decided he wanted me to be his wife. I stared out the window. “Could you do me a favor and tell Nolan the opposite?” It was deceitful but I didn’t want to carry his children and already explained to him why not.  “You should tell him how you feel.” She suggested. “I can’t lie to my King.” “I understand.” I sighed and left. I only wanted to lie because it’s not like Nolan wanted to have a kid for himself. I Didn’t want a daughter no matter how amazing it could be. I walked to the dining room and sat down for lunch. “Red,” Nolan said to get my attention. “How was the doctor's visit?”  I shrugged and there was a long pause before I spoke. “It doesn’t matter. Nolan let’s just not have kids. It’s not like I’ll be ready for s*x anytime soon anyways.” I blushed. “I’m overwhelmed.” Nolan watched me. “Because I’m a demon?” I didn’t want to upset him with the answer because it wasn’t personal. I shrugged and wouldn’t look him in the eye. “That and we just met...” “We don’t have to have children until you’re comfortable with the idea.” I felt relieved until he said, “During s*x, I’d be gentle with you.” He said with his deep voice which didn’t make it better. I threw my face into my hands out of embarrassment. “Don’t say that…” He shrugged. “Your idea of a demon is like everyone else’s correct? So you’re afraid of the idea of having s*x with me, a demon because you think I’d behave a certain way.” I moved my hands. “I guess I have some preconceived notions. I don’t really know how demons are or what to expect so I’m cautious.” We did sleep together in the same bed the last couple last nights but he didn’t touch me at all for the entirety of any of those nights. He stared at me for a while then the food was served. “Yes?”  He looked away. “The order is trying to make a deal with me. Since they’ve found out about you being here I had to get in touch with them. They’re offering money and for me to take one of their members as my wife instead.” “Then why don’t you?” I don’t know what came over me, I didn’t even think before letting those words fall out my mouth. “Maybe she’d want to have s*x with you and have your kids. She wouldn’t-“ “Red stop.” He cut me off. “Don’t torture yourself with thoughts like that. But to answer your question I don’t because I care about you. I wouldn’t want to be with anyone else.” He started eating and so did I. Hearing that he cared about me made me feel warm inside. I’ve started caring about him too, maybe that’s why I got a little jealous and insecure before. It scares me how many women he would be better off with and if he figures that out I could just be shipped back to my father. Then I’d never get the chance to know Nolan or about demons.  When we were done Nolan broke the silence. “I got you something to wear for the ball tomorrow. It’s in our room.”  “Okay.” I watched him leave to his office. He worked so much but he is King to an entire realm. I started walking around the castle when I stopped at a portrait of Nolan’s previous wife. “She’s beautiful,” I whispered to myself but a servant overheard. “She was.” He chuckled sadly. “She was a good Queen too, caring. Stefan doesn’t remember much of her anymore.” He took a better look at me “Oh you’re Red. I’m sorry I didn’t-“ “No no, it’s okay.” I insisted. “I’m not offended. Hearing about her is nice. How did she die?” He shrugged. “It’s not really common knowledge since Nolan didn’t want to share. It must have been too hard for him. But I know some of the higher-up workers know why.” He shrugged and I got a good look at him. “How old are you?” I asked. “Eighteen. King Nolan has this program for orphans. He offers us jobs here and other opportunities. I should be able to save up enough money to go to school.” The demon world was a lot like the human world. It was a big surprise, they had a civil society just like we did only all under one rule. “I’m Evan.” He shook my hand. “It’s nice to see the King remarry. He wasn’t the same after the death of his wife and he never dated or had women over. You must be something special to have caught his eye.”  What did I do to make Nolan interested in me? “Well, I have to get back to work. It was nice to meet you Red.” He smiled and left. I really wanted to know about demons but I wasn’t able to leave the castle all on my own. I didn’t want to bug Gwen so I went to the head servant whose name I learned was Paula. “Excuse me.” She stopped what she was doing and looked at me. “Hello Red, need anything?” I nodded. “I was wondering if there was a way I could learn more about this realm and its people. If I’m going to be Queen I think I should know about these things.” “Oh.” She looked surprised. “Why don’t you sit in at one of our schools? In the city, there is a college. I can send someone with you to sit through one of the history lectures. That might give you a chance to learn something and I think Nolan will really be impressed with this.” Impressing Nolan would be a nice plus. I never thought I’d ever go to any kind of school before. I nodded. “That would be amazing.” “You can meet them at the gates.” She said and I left to the gates. I had to wait twenty minutes before someone arrived. It was a young man who looked a lot like Nolan but his body language and energy was a lot more active. Like his personality was a lot different. “It’s nice to meet you Red I’m Wayne,” he introduced. He was dressed nicely with a bag around his upper body. “I go to the university in the city. We should head over now so we can make my history classes lecture.” I nodded and followed him. “Is university here like it is in the human world? If you know anyways about the human world.” He looked back at me and chuckled. “Yeah, I know about the human world. We learn about it in grade school. I think our education system is similar but a lot different. We have an elementary school and high school but no jr high and the years for both are a bit different. Our curriculum is a lot different too and we don’t pay for a university like they do in some countries in your world.” I guess when Evan said she was saving up for school he meant other expenses, not tuition. “Our life spans are a lot longer than humans so we spend a lot more time in elementary, high school, and university.” In the human world whenever I met a human that actually knew about the demon world they acted like demons weren’t living as modernly as us but they’re just as intelligent and rational.  We got in his car and I looked out the window up at the sky. Some demons who had wings flew to where they had to go. “I always wanted to live in the magical realm but it seems like this realm is magical too.” I smiled.  He chuckled. “That’s one way to describe it.” I looked at him. “Why is Nolan so worried about my safety here if the demons are civil?”  He nervously chuckled. “Well there are low-class demons and high-class demons and the classes in this sense aren't about wealth or title. Most in this city are high class for example everyone in the castle is high class. Low-class demons aren’t as civil. They’re the demons that give us a bad name. They give in to every impulse of hunger and aggression. They give in other parts of the realm. Some of them get into the city and they’d be attracted to you. Incubus and succubus can be low-class or high-class but either way, you don’t want to cross their path.” They’re the kind of demons who get energy from s****l activity.  “Oh, I think I get it.”  He parked his car. “Even high-class demons can be stupid. We’re just more developed so we’re capable of being decent people. They might still want to cause you harm because you’re human and we don’t have the best history with humans from before the three realms split.” All I needed to learn about demons was to hang around Wayne.  “Why did Paula choose you specifically?” I asked.  “I think I’m the only university student living in the castle.” He said. “Plus I did want to meet you soon. I’ve been so busy I haven’t been around the castle much.” I was surprised to hear he lived in the castle. “You’re not really what I expected.” We got out of his car. “What do you mean?” Maybe he expected the King to choose a more beautiful woman.  “I just didn’t expect him to marry someone so similar to his last wife.” He started. “You’re not exactly like her, only in some aspects but I thought you’d be her opposite so the past wouldn’t repeat itself.” I guess Nolan had some kind of type. We don’t physically look anything alike other than our gray eyes.  We walked into a building and he opened the door to a classroom for me and I walked in after him. We sat in the back. I looked around and I liked the atmosphere. The class hadn't started yet so everyone was staring at me and whispering about me until it started.  During the lecture, the professor spoke a lot about the gods and goddesses. Every species had a god or goddess. Humans had a human god, elves had Mother Nature, werewolves and dragon shifters had the moon goddess, etc. As for demons, they had Hades. There were more species with other gods and goddesses. I always thought we were under one god but there are many.  When it was over I and Wayne walked to his car and started driving back to the castle. “I could ask Nolan if you can attend the university full time if you want,” Wayne suggested. I smiled. “That would be nice.” I looked down at my hands. “Everyone else calls Nolan “The King.” Or “King Nolan.” But you just call him by his first name.”  “That’s the perks that come with being his brother.” I didn’t think Nolan had any family. “I guess he hasn’t mentioned me?”  I shook my head. I wanted to know everything about Nolan but he worked so much I don’t know if we’ll ever have the time to get to know each other the way I want. “Seems like him. I guess me and you are gonna be family so we should definitely hang out more. “I’d like that.” I got out after he parked. “Wayne. Do you think I can live up to the last Queen?”  He got out and slightly chuckled. “Yes but I fear you’ll suffer the same fate.” He knew how she died, I wanted to ask but a part of me wasn’t ready to know. “Just stick to your instincts.”  I nodded and left into the castle and to my room. I saw the hot pink dress laid on the bed. It was a ball gown tight at the torso and the bottom half puffy. “I can’t wear this…” The fact that Nolan even thought I could pull it off at the ball tomorrow worried me.
