Uneasy

The next week passed like mud. Slow, uneventful, tense. I was on pins and needles waiting to see what nonsense Blake would sweep into my life on Friday. Even more annoyed with myself for not having a sense of self control. I knew Joe was irritated with me as well. And that was f*****g infuriating. I couldn’t stand disappointing the one person currently on this earth that meant anything to me. He was too decent to show it. It's not like he could give me the silent treatment. He was silent already. But I could feel it in the new weight he carried in his shoulders and the sad dullness in his passing glances my way. It all caused a lump in my throat and a thick fog in my brain. Friday came and there was no sign of Blake. It was strange. There was an energy in the air that almost expected the hoard of insatiable and crude muscular thugs to come bumbling through the door…but the hours passed, and no such presence burst in. Once it seemed like the coast was clear, many of the regulars that were recently avoiding Fridays, made their way into the bar. The place filled with its normal jovial smoky atmosphere, and I let down my guard as the hours ticked by. I chastised myself internally. If the general public could breathe easier outside the presence of this Blake guy… I needed to rid myself of his spell. I needed to get out before it was too late. But was it already too late? I chewed on my lip remembering the way he growled "mine" in that crazed way. Thirty minutes before closing time and the door slammed open. I swear the metal and glass of the front entrance came close to shattering as Blake and two of his henchmen came sweeping in. My breath hitched in my throat and the levels of adrenaline coursing through my bloodstream were almost toxic. But I’d done nothing wrong. I could feel Joe tense behind me as he moved to step in front of my body, shielding me from whatever danger they brought with them. “Everybody- get the f**k out.” Blake growled and I think my heart dropped to my toes. I felt Joe tense again beside me, puffing up as best he could. “You too, old man. This doesn’t concern you.” Joe bit through clenched teeth. But Joe didn’t move. “I swear, you f*****g ass, go now or you make more trouble for her.” Joe stole an uneasy glance my way and I tried to swallow my terror. “It’s okay, Joe. I’ll be back to help close up in a few.” I nodded a few more times to reassure him. But in my head it was to get him out of here, and quickly. I didn’t think Blake would hurt me…but I was ridiculously uncertain on that assumption. Joe slowly unpuffed and made his way to the backroom, looking concerned and crestfallen. I knew he wouldn’t be far, so I needed to try and control the situation, so he didn’t need to be involved. I had already lost my parents. I didn’t want Joe hurt too. Once all bodies were out of earshot, Blake was on me like a bullet. He had me pressed up against the bar and the worn wood was digging into my back. “Hey!” I tried to push him back, but he didn’t budge. He ran his nose up my neck and into my hair, snatching my head to the side with his fingers intertwined in my loose braid. “What the actual f**k, Baby?” He almost growled again, causing the hairs on the back of my neck to stand on end. “Blake? What are you on about? Chill the f**k out.” “Kill it, Sawyer.” “What!? What are you talking about?” This time I tried a little harder to shove him off of me, and it almost had a little effect. He pressed forward, almost hurting me as the wood bit into my back, his chest faltered slightly and those piercing green eyes locked on mine. “Alpha…..” One of his cronies had a warning tone in his voice. He seemed to jerk his head to the side in a disapproving manner. But Blake’s grip on my forearm tightened and it hurt…bad. I knew it would be badly bruised tomorrow. So, I snatched my arm away, massaging the spot. “Seriously, Blake. What the f**k?” I challenged him. “The child. You cannot carry my child. Kill it. End the pregnancy. Or I will.” The glare in his eyes was nothing less than evil. And my soul dropped. Terror filled me. Pregnant? No. That’s not possible. And how would he even f*****g know? And even if I was, he has no idea who he is dealing with here. I knew my best bet was to try and appease and get him out of here. “Blake. I have no idea what you’re talking about. You’re tired. Go home. Get some sleep.” He looked disheveled, crazed…..dangerous. I needed distance from him. And quickly. He shoved off of me and was pacing, like a caged animal, rabid and lethal. “Sawyer. I have too much s**t going on right now. That thing is abhorrent. It’s not natural. And they’ll kill it. So kill it now. If you don’t, I will know. And I’ll kill you both myself.” I swear his eyes changed from green to black and a shiver went down my spine. Could I seriously be pregnant? Blake was back on me, breathing me in again and trying to calm himself. I was like his drug. It was soothing and terrifying all in one breath. “Please don’t make me kill you Sawyer. I just got you. I want to keep you. You’re mine. But I’ll end you if you disobey me. Just like the rest of them.” He growled out the last line and flew out the front door in a flash of dark clothing and turmoil. His hired help swept out after him, half a second behind. And they left me like that, in the bar, alone, clutching to the countertop for strength and sanity. What in the actual hell is going on?
