WILLIAM Watching her stand outside that hospital room felt like standing in front of a fire I was not allowed to step into. Sky stood there with her back straight and her chin lifted, but everything else about her betrayed her. Her fingers trembled at her sides. Her shoulders were stiff, pulled tight like she was holding herself together by force alone. Her eyes stayed fixed on that door, the one she was forbidden to open, the one separating her from a man who had hurt her and was now being protected from her. They treated her like a disease, I swear I felt like giving them all my pieces. I had stood there all this time. She got slapped and also got blamed. I stayed hidden, pressed against the wall near the corridor bend, far enough to be unseen but close enough to hear everything
