In the dim light of the prison cell on the first floor of the panopticon, Jason sat against the wall, his eyes shut in despair. The panopticon at Eastside Prison had been built in the previous century, a product of Bentham's philosophy. The structure featured a central watchtower surrounded by circular prison cells. Each isolated cell faced the central tower, which was equipped with blinds. This design allowed the observer in the tower to monitor the interior of every cell with ease, while the prisoners had no way of knowing if or when they were being watched. This design had once made it much easier for Jason to manage the prisoners. But now, the tables had turned.
